Roy Hodgson has revealed he left Michael Carrick out of his England squad for the European Championship because the Manchester United midfielder was not prepared to fulfil a fringe role.
Carrick, 30, was one notable omission from the 23-man squad Hodgson announced on Wednesday - with the former Tottenham and West Ham player's name also missing from the list of players on standby for the squad in case of injury.
Hodgson confirmed that Carrick was left out because he had previously declared himself unprepared to make up the numbers with the Three Lions, while Hodgson deemed Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, Gareth Barry and Scott Parker to all be preferable central midfield options.
"I wouldn't dream of putting Michael on a standby list after he has made it clear in the past he doesn't want to be involved like that," Hodgson said.
"I'd have to be convinced he was better than the four I've selected and that he'd be happy to come out of retirement."
Carrick has not retired from international football, however, with Club England managing director Adrian Bevington confirming he was ready to help if circumstances ravaged Hodgson's midfield options.
"Michael will help in an extreme case," Bevington said.
Carrick has 22 England caps, and has been involved in two World Cup squads with the international setup. However, he managed just one substitute appearance during those tournaments.
thats one of the biggest problems with england footballers they all think they are better than they are
they should all be so proud to put the three lions shirt on and do it for pride
i rather see 11 unknown footballers leading the country out and showing pride and passion rather than glory boys

The squad Hodgson has picked wont win a single game ...... Who is going to score the goals ? Rooney isnt available until the third match. Downing has been useless all season , Andy Carroll isnt even a premier league player he is hopeless !!!!! All Man United fans will tell us that Phil Jones and Danny Welbeck have been poor , John Terry is a donkey ........ its hopeless !!!!!!

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is being targeted by Aston Villa to fill their vacant managerial role, according to reports.
Solskjaer, 39, is currently in charge of Molde, where he led the club to their first Norwegian league title in October last year.
Villa are currently on the hunt for a new boss after sacking Alex McLeish following a disappointing season which yielded just seven wins from 38 Premier League matches.
Former Manchester United forward Solskjaer is said to be high on Villa's list of targets to succeed the Scot, although it remains to be seen if he would leave Molde, where he is contracted for a further two years.

Fabio Capello has been linked with the vacant Chelsea job
Fabio Capello is interested in taking charge of Chelsea and will attend the club's Champions League final in Munich, according to ESPN sources.
Chelsea have yet to appoint a permanent successor to Andre Villas-Boas, who they sacked in March, with Roberto Di Matteo placed in interim charge.
Di Matteo has impressed in the role, guiding the Blues to FA Cup glory and also to the Champions League final, which they contest on Saturday against Bayern Munich.
Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is seemingly undecided over who will lead the club beyond the showpiece at the Allianz Arena, although reports this week have linked Capello with the position.
The former AC Milan and Real Madrid manager is without a side after parting company with England in February, and it is understood he would be interested in managing Chelsea, having previously expressed his willingness to oversee a top Premier League side.
