Avis Thomas from Leeds - wife of the 1977/8 Anglers Mail Matchman of the year start Dave Thomas - made it a family double when she won the NFA Ladies National on the Upper River Nene with a 2lb 7oz catch of tiny roach, 'skimmer' bream and gudgeon and perch.

She was the only woman to weigh in more than 2lb of fish along the whole Elton and Nassington length of the Nene.

Runner up was Sheffield shop assistant Pat Needham who took 1 - 12 - 0 to the scales. Third place went to Chesterfield tackle dealer Gladys Evans, 36, who snatched 1 -9 - 0 of bleak on a 22 foot long pole.'
