The difference ‘them’ days is that they generally did have to be poleaxed (apart from Frannie Lee) to go down Image

Chopper, says it all really :)
Been fortunate to meet him a couple of times and he's a real gent. Image

Those two Fa Cup matches, the Final and the replay were two of the most vicious games ever, I went to the final, but watched the replay with 15 others crammed into a mates front room in Balham as they were the only ones with a colour telly. ;)

There's always debate about how modern players are fitter, more skilled etc, and how the old boys who would have a ciggie at half time with their cup of tea wouldn't have coped with the pace of the game. It's nonsense of course. When you look at the pitches they played on, the equipment they had, the lack of protection from referees, and often playing through injuries that would have given modern players the willies, they were nothing short of heroic. But it has always been the same - wasn't it Billy Wright who looked at Puskas before that infamous Wembley drubbing, and said: 'Who is the little fat chap?' He soon found out...

I have seen Chopper Harris and Norman Hunter but by far the hardest I ever saw was the late Eddie Clamp, formerly of Wolves and England. Good player though but thank crappity smack Stoke got him; more often than not they played against ten men Image Image Image Image Image

That tackle on Chopper is the stuff of legend - the background is that the very young Chopper was treating Stan Matthews in a less than gentle fashion and ignored Eddie Clamp's warnings. Retribution came when Chopper was bringing the ball out of defence and Clampy took man and ball in a tackle that sent Chopper skywards and the ball into the top tier of the stands on the opposite side of the pitch.
'I don't make threats, I make promises,' roared Clampy to the almost comatose Chopper. Typically, they had a pint together after the game.
The other great quote was about Stan's statue.
'It's perfect Stan, high enough so dogs can't yellow stream on it, but not so high that pigeons will sh!t on it.'
