EDIT: Added report..
Image

Arrived @ Woodlane today(31/08/2011) at about 6:50.. Was setup and ready to go by about 7:10.. 2 swims today which were 10mtres right out infront of me and 5meters out infront of me on the nearside shelf...

Fished that 'flyer' peg which is oppersite those big stickups.. Cupped in 2 golf ball sized Groundbait and fished maggot/hemp/4mm expander.. but could i get a bite?

COULD I HECK' Image

Today was a complete and utter disaster myself had caught nothing.. brother had a few nibbles but managed to get into a small roach which was lost just before the net..

Decided to pack up and just relax with a simple rod.. so during packing up.. i had left the rod in.. within seconds.. A BITE!

First small roach of the day..

Another..

Another..

I thought it was just total luck.. but casted out again and continued to pack up.. hit the same place again and another small little roach!

HOLY MOLY, why was this working???

We continued on till about 2pm catching small sized roach and a decent sized perch 8-9oz

Glad we didnt blank but uno.. But question, Is the rod looking better than the pole nowadays?!

I couldnt even pick anything up in the nearside bank :(

I also tried fishing right next to the stickups opersite me which were about 11meters out.. my pole is only 10 so i extended my rig with an extra 1m in line or so.. and swung it towards.. Not even a nibble Image

Cotti also reckons it's a flyer too ;)

Interesting the diff between pole and wag though.................how did your two rigs differ?
Flat type?
Shotting?
Depth fished at?
Line?

You've indicated you didnt have the pole over their heads to spook 'em so why did they have a peck on that rig..........or was it just the time of day they started to switch on?

Were they preoccupied with your gb?

or spooked by it?

How's the song go?

'There are more questions than answers.............'

And does that 'roach' look like its got a bit of rudd in it?

My 2 rigs were the same float;

a 4x12 shotted down with 3 bulked no8's and 1 no8 dropper on both, Size 20 hook, .13 powerline to a .11 powerline hook length

tryed fishing dead depth to start of then i went overdepth by half a foot.. then to finish of i fished about 1-2inches off the bottom..

And there were some indication of fish in the swim.. So thats what i coudlnt understand what i was doing wrong.. my brother fished right down the track and managed to nab a fish but lost it.. i did have a quick look down their but nothing...

My groundbait was 'Dark Van Den Eynde' smelt abit chocy.. but a couple of maggot in it.. I couldnt really tell you if it helped or didnt tbh as that was first time using GB on the cut.

Can't say you did owt wrong Josh - other than you fished miles heavier than i do

I'm using Silstar (WB Clarke) 0.06 (1.4lb) and 0.08 (1.8lb0 - my beastie rig is 0.10 (2.6lb)

Might just have been one of those days.....

but having said that - shifting a shot about an inch or two, can make a difference, along with the type/guage of hook

How many times have you been asked 'what size hook you got on? and when you say 22, you are greeted with, 'I've fished a 22 all day and cant buy a bite'.........but there is a reason why

This was graphically demonstrated on one match on the Avon at Swifts that i was fortunate to win a few years back.

It was hard - the Avon can be cruel - but most were picking up odd fish.

I was on the insert wag up in the water mid river, having a bite a chuck - but only 1/2 to 1oz roach

fish after fish.........

But I bent the fine wire hook unhooking a fish.

The hook got progressively worse after more fish so I changed it, for another - same size - but slightly sturdier type.

The result...............?

Next half dozen chucks - nowt. i'd carried on feeding whilst tying the hook so they hadnt 'buggered off'

So I ripped off the replacement hook, put another fine wire hook back on.......

Result...............

Instantaneous bites again - one after another

AOK if I'd have hit a rogue chub i'd have been in trouble with that hook....... but I played percentages and it worked fine that day for me

I wouldnt say its that heavy ;)

Its just to put up a decent fight if i run into a rogue carp or one of those 4-5lb tench haha..

Its an intresting observation from marko.. But in my case i dont think thats the reason why it was dead for me today..

Because these were the exactly the same setup as what i used the last couple of times on the canal..

BUT.. talking of floats.. i used a 4x12 pole float; caught nothing.. put on a small canal 2bb float on the rod+reel and i started to catch..

Weird.. :o
