Essington Wyreley Canal Morning Session 25-6-11
Hello all, Me again
As ive been exited & planning my session all week, finally got there this morning at around 7am with my brother, Forgot where it was and ended up at the Fingerpost Pub, but managed to back track to Wood lane .. So we set off to find a peg availible for us to both sit in which ende up being about 75 yards to the leftside of woodlane bridge.
Me and Joe fished both on the rod&reel using a 2bb Canal float with 2 slow sinking shot and our target was the front shelf, Bait to start our sessions was Liquidised +Punch..
Had a few nibbles but nothing
Switched over to a single maggot on the hook with me feeding hemp and a few maggots every so often.. within 5minutes my brother was in to his first ever canal FISH!
So the exitement continued and yet again, ANOTHER!
But this time a nice little perch
So im here scratching my head thinking what the hell am i doing wrong.. The swim had a few swirls but nothing major like i usually see on a commie
Brought in the rod/reel and do a few adjustments - just about to throw in some maggots after the cast and BAM!
I was into my first ever Tench which took me for a mug taking me in and out all the weed bedding just infront.. After a nice 5minute fight, LANDED!
A nice beautiful red-eyed tench!
Easily a 4-5lber wish i had my scales!
So the session continued and meeting the new Baliff of the E&W giving me a few tips which helped alot thanks for that .. Then we had the rain; which made casting a little difficult.. But then game over!
Heard it coming with 2 sailors or whatever smiling saying 'GOOD MORNING SIR'
My brother continued to catch a few more little roach but for me it was over.
Decided to pack up and go home and try again next week! till then
Thanks for reading!

Went and had another go today, fished rightside of woodlane, about 50 yards, water was way to clear, had no bites or action all day :( nevermind

I wandered down around noon and to be honest I've never seen the canal to the left of Wood Lane as clear as it was ever in the summertime - I know it goes 'gin' during the winter, but it was like tap water.
In fact the common was positively 'coloured' in comparison Josh
This guy had a couple of tincas........is that you a bit further on?
I went searching down past the match down to the wides - there was a massive shoal of bream down there basking...........I'd got the polaroids on, took some snaps, but sadly I aint got polarised lenses on the camera so you cant see them unless you really zoom in on the original photos :(

yeah me and the joe their ha!
Majority of the match lads had left by 3 must've not caught, but the 2 lads next to me had a couple of roach, heard the one had 2 tench, and lost 1...
The whole cut was tap water by me i saw a few fish topping but nothing :(
Might try again next saturday.. 'Will' get a good bag on their eventually!

Was it that clear yesterday Josh when you had that tench - or was it just that the overcast conditions masked the water clarity?
There was a chap just before the wides pleasure fishing he was on the punch. he had a couple of bites (down the track)whilst I watched for a few minures, but I could actually see the fish swimming just below his float

i think most places fished sh1te today. I fished dunston heath and to say it was a shite day was an understatement. No one was catching sod all. I went down to .10 line 22 hook, 5 laccy and half a maggot as bait and managed to snatch a few lb of roach blades and perch. No one had any carp, bream, tench ect out.

fare play josh but natural venues are a lot harder its very unlikely that you could catch tench all day
but small fish i think you could have a good day when bill has got his pc back in shape again ::)i'm sure he will put you on to the right trail with bread punch

I go to target Roach everytime ive been on the canal anyways!
Id bee happy with 10lb in roach, than 2 5lb tench anyday!
Only thing i need to help on with the punch is
Should i punch bread streight from the bag? or roll it out? I dont understand the differances, and how much liquidised bread should i use to start off my session? and should i throw it in or cup it in ?
Advice pleasee JOFF

In those conditions (bright blue sky and clear canal) you are going to struggle, you need cloud cover, but failing that, if you are after the roach then give the bread and seed a go.
Reading down the thread, as mentioned cup the bread in, but don't go putting too much in as this could fill the fish up, another method is to put the liquidised bread into a container and add water to it until it becomes a slop, when this get's put into the water, it will look as if you are pouring milk into the canal.
If you want big bags of roach (7lb to 10lb plus) then give the seed (hemp and tares) a go, if you get it right with the fish in front of you, you will have them crawling up your line, but it is not an instant bait, so you must build that swim up and keep trying it until the fish are feeding with confidence.
My best bag of canal roach was taken a couple of years ago by Birmingham City centre, started on the hemp and then moved to the tares, only fished it for just under four hours but had around 30lb of roach, that was by far my best catch of roach on a canal, have had numerous 10lb plus bags on the seed, but that day they really wanted it, and it was like gudgeon fishing on the canals in the old days where you wouldn't watch the float but count, if I didn't have a fish in 30 to 45 seconds, then it was a case of lifting the bait and trying again.
But build that swim up and don't fishing it with anything else, keep feeding it with the hemp, you only need to put in 10 grains (maybe more or less), then fill your boots.
