Former England international plunders river Severn bream shoal to set double ton best for waterway.

Dave Harrell has smashed the river Severn match record with a bag of bream weighing in at a staggering 213lb.

The former England international and Match Fishing magazine editor landed 38 fish to a weight of 8lb to amass the bag - which beats the previous best thought to be 150lb - during the first day of the Upton-on-Severn Festival.

Drawing a peg well known for producing quality bream catches, Dave fished his swim with a worm and maggot cocktail on a size 12 Kamasan Animal spade hook with 8lb mainline and 0.20mm hooklength. But once he realised just what was out in front of him he changed to a size 10 hook with a 0.23mm hook length ‘taking no prisoners’.

To keep the fish feeding 4 pints of casters and half a kilo of worm went in via the feeder, carried in Dynamite Baits Marine Halibut groundbait with two thirds brown crumb. Although later in the match he switched to the bomb, with the bites coming thick and fast.

“I knew the peg had form as my friend Matt Maginnis had pleasure fished it and caught well in the week, so when I loaded the car I decided to put two keepnets in, just in case,” said a jubilant Dave.

“I fished around two thirds of the way across in around 12feet of water. It took 45 minutes to get the first bite and then I caught 38 fish up to 8lb steadily throughout the match. Oh, and one perch.”
