"IT SEEMS unbelievable why thieves should want high voltage warning signs, but these are being stolen from the Coventry Canal.

These are the signs warning anglers not to fish within the area surrounding overhead high voltage power lines, with the wooden poles being pulled out of the ground and taken away.

20 removed in one week

The recent thefts are the latest in a string of similar incidents in which large wooden posts carrying the warning signs were pulled out of the ground, with the waterway between Coventry and Nuneaton a particular hotspot with around 20 of the posts being pulled out in the space of one week.

The posts are installed to warn anglers of the presence of overhead power lines and to mark a 30 metre exclusion zone in which angling is not permitted. Power lines are uninsulated which means that, if fishing rods and poles made from carbon fibre and similar materials get too close, the electricity can jump from the cable to the rod.

Required by law

As the posts are required by law the recent spate of thefts has meant British Waterways operations teams have devoted a significant amount of time responding to these incidents. The teams have been able to recover some of the posts that were dumped in the canal and on adjacent land but others appear to have been taken away.

Darren Green, Waterway Manager, explained:

"These posts are required by law to warn anglers of the dangers of overhead power lines. It's not clear whether the posts are being removed for firewood or simply as an act of vandalism, but this irresponsible behaviour poses a very real danger to anglers—particularly young or inexperienced anglers who may not be aware of the risks.

"We would urge those removing the posts to think about the potential consequences of their actions and ask anyone noticing such behaviour to report it to us".

Possibly the "antis"... hoping that both anglers will get blame, and also that someone will get killed? They are a sick enough cunch of bunts to do this

all our permanent pegs went missing off the river soar deffo for fire wood as you'd of found a few floating in the river if it was just vandalism

If you load a 'large wooden post' onto your narrow boat, you won't need to carry it far. Cruise 10 miles away and cut it up there for your open fire. Perhaps it was more of a public services article so that all boat owners can all get their firewood that way!

I know that sounds incredible but there used to be a private builders yard near to where I live in Stafford.
The chap lived in a huge old house on the premises. One night some crappity smack went in his yard (it was always open) and knicked his....
....wait for it...his steamroller! It wasn't one of those little jobs it was a great big old crappity smack; nobody ever got caught for it and it was never seen again.
He must have been a deep sleeper because he never heard a thing

It was around 1960.

This is another one that is equally incredible but true.

Many years back, 1985 it was, the National was at Liverpool on the canal.
We used to race up there on Wednesdays to fish the evening matches; the draw was at a pub called the Running Horses at Lydiate. Just before you got to the pub there was a corner shop run by two sisters. They did sarnies and would warm pies for you.
Apparently they occasionally went down the cut selling them as well.
Anyway this one week we went up there were bars all over the windows but it was still open. They said they had had enough of all the theft in the area and they were leaving.
It came to this when some crappity smack wheelbarrowed one of their neighbours front lawn away in the middle of the night!!!!!!!!!!!!!
