nearly there murffin and you might be right with a couple of them, i know the lad would of perhaps had some made by ray and vice versa
a very famous float was born after these were made before to many poles were used
and probably the first quick change float idea as well
note the lead at the bottom of the floats he was the very best at this sort of fishing

Joff,As a kid growing up and wanting to learn all about match fishing the only place to gain info was the weekly angling papers and the LIBRARIES,
no internet mobiles etc lol
but all the books really helped alot and ive read loads , IVANS, DICKIE CARR, BIG KEV, BOB NUDD. KIM MILLSOM etc, etc, all masters
but one book that i still refere back to and if you havent read it its a must , was by a class angler and author who wrote a few angling books by which i mean, competition fishing etc,
John Carding, CONTINENTAL MATCH ANGLING, John spent a lot of time in FRANCE, and studing the french approach to match fihing in the book the one thing that really sticks for me are the technical, shotting paterns with very very tiny shot which we still use to day for roach fishing
WORM/JOKER SQUATT ETC , way ahead of there time and are still rellavent know

Not an angler and author I'm familiar with Murffin, Joffie and CWH, but as a result of this topic I've just this minute purchased 'Continental Match Fishing' by John Carding off ebay
Really looking forward to a good read at only £2.99 plus p&p - ta for the recommendation Murffin

The late John Carding was a very accomplished angler and angling author, - way in front of many others (poss Dick Walker excepted) in his time. He edited several books, I think I must have read them all, on match fishing. I still have a few including Match Fishing with the Experts; this includes features by Stan Piecha, amongst others.
To me Dick Walker was the best angling author in recent years. He had only a passing interest in match fishing but some of his ideas were well before all our time and a lot of his ideas, way back from the 50s, form the basis of some match tactics today.
He used to live in a house on the banks of the River Ivel. As far as I know his wife, who I have met a couple of times, is still about. Dick Walker's study had been untouched (but for cleaning) since the day he passed away.
Here endeth my history lesson

More on John Carding........
I think the first book he ever edited was called Continental Pole Fishing followed by one simply called Match Fishing, - these would have been around 1977/8.
He lived in London and was actually one of the first NFA/NAC (as it was then) qualified coaches and spent a lot of time doing such.
He fished for a very successful side called 279AC. He was an all rounder and fished all over the place, often coming up to Evesham on the Warwickshire Avon.
As research for his book Continental Pole Fishing he actually went over to France to study the subject and to gain more information.
In his book Match Fishing with the Experts he pens a chapter on pole fishing continental style and ecourages anglers to use it here, there is also a piece on groundbait mixes, balling it in and the like; this book was published in 1979.
He would have been 59 if he was alive today.
