Grueller match 3 2010 - Hat's off too...........

#1

With a few more faces returning to the fold the turnout for this one was slightly up.

Big Baz had pegged out - 13 pegs past the ‘broken bridge’ on the Kennels section of the Extension. For those readers not au fait with this section of canal, the broken bridge is a bit of a misleader…………there’s no actual bridge there anymore,  Image it was taken down a few years ago……….the ‘bridge’ stood immediately south of the Grove Marina where the cut narrows. Two Shakes would know the area well……… ;)

Just before the draw there was a slight problem with the 13 pegs…………….KOD counted 14 faces in attendance. :D

I suggested that anyone drawing 14 just dropped on the end, but Baz reported that a raft of leaves wasn’t a million miles away from end peg 13…………so off he trotted and dropped peg 14 just the other side of 1 (and that broken invisible bridge)

The draw got underway and Cotti draw his usual flyer  Image -  end peg 13, with Big Baz dropping on end peg 14……..hope that aint too confusing for those reading this  :D

As for myself I copped for peg 7 - half way along the length. After all the matches we’ve had on this canal I’d never ended drawing that far along the section, but I was relatively ‘happy’ with it as I knew there were fish in that vicinity.  Image With the milder conditions I’d deliberately not purchased and w&j for this 3rd match on the trot - deciding instead to gamble once again on the punch/chop/caster outscoring w&j with one or two  ‘bonus’ fish.

in fact before the draw and during set up there were fishing topping  Image

Here’s my peg - sorry it’s a bit ‘bright’.

Image

Talking of ‘bright’ it was beautiful autumn morning……………..probably better for fell walking than actually fishing, giving the conditions on what is a bit of a ‘clear’ cut - although it must be said it wasn’t actually ‘gin’

For company I’d got the two ‘Arthurs’ flanking me either side today and set up with 10 mins to spare I took a few photos of the gruellerites and the cut……….

Walking back to my peg Heinzer blew up for the off. That reminds me, next time Mrs Heinzer asks me what she can get him for his birthday/Xmas I know what I shall tell her……………….a new watch!!!  Image As we all agreed he was 3 to 4 mins early  Image

Lines fed and a look on a track punch line. First put in and the float buried straight away.  Image   A lift and the dreaded dry net was avoided…………….but my concern was that my first fish was a micro gudgeon. :'(  Was that a bad omen?

Bites 2 and 3 were missed  Image - were they further micro gudgeon just hanging onto the punch?

10 minutes on and Cheslynboy struck to my right and safely netted a two ouncer to blow me away  :o …………….I was feeling the pressure as I could see Blues4eva the otherside of him wheedling a few out. Elsewhere to my right with the other Arthur and MarkO things looked ‘quiet’ as I hadn’t seen them have out. Image

Bites were at a premium, but 25 mins in and a dip and a lift…………the lackie comes out, this aint a gudgeon. Image  I ship back gently as a reasonable skimmer - looked about 6 ounce - came to the surface. Gently with it…………..but before I even get to break down the top 3 it comes off. Disaster. Image  Image

At least it come off close to me and I’m encouraged that it shouldn’t spook anymore fish on that line and there’s sure to be one or two still over that punch……… Image

And so there were……….in the next half hour or so I pick up 4 smaller samples, (plus another micro gudgeon) which are all gratefully netted…….the skimmers that is. Image

There’s not a lot more to report about my match. :(  A boat came slowly along - very slowly actually - but after that I couldn’t snare another bite from that deeper line for the rest of the match. Image

In fact we had 3 more boats - most unusual for this canal………..one of which wiped out the far line as clouds of mud billowed up. Image

Chopping and changing resulted in a few small perch - and I mean small, as my chop and caster failed to tempt any decent samples.  Image

However it wasn’t like that for all as news filtered down that Big Baz, upon seeing the first approaching boat, decided to have a look on his caster track line…………..with the result of 5 caster fish one after the other before the boat reached him. :o

It was also obvious that Blues4eva was going to be there or there abouts as he caught ‘steady’ all the way through - bits, probably on the l r m??????

And likewise MarkO  who couldn’t buy a bite for the first two hours was finishing well.

And the tale of the scales bore that out as I followed the scales along from Cotti down…………..

What's Terry Turnip going to weigh in today  :D

At least Cheslynboy had avoided the dreaded DNW today

Well for match 4 it’s onto the boatyard by ‘mutual’ consent.

That should satisfy Cheslynboy……………and Big Baz who said ‘It’ll be just cock on for the boatyard in a fortnight………….’

We’ll see  Image Image

Nice report again TK. Must admit, it was a cracking autumn day in the sunshine  :) Nice photos too.....Big Baz is getting quite photogenic now, considering he used to hide when the cameras were about  Image
Cant believe we had 3 bloody boats though  >:(
Wish I had stuck to catching blades on the slop and squatt, instead of chasing non existent bonus fish  Image  They were that small though Cotty actually asked if it was my bait I was swinging in lol.

PS. Will there be brekkies available at Yates for the boatyard match??
