just one or two things about hemp fishing a couple of years ago i was bagging on the stuff river, canals and lakes i know its early for the bait but odd anglers were catching on it yesterday but the same anglers didn't do that well in there sections
you have probably seen that Harold won his section yesterday and he had a very good hemp angler next to him Joe oaks plus he was on the end peg as well now Joe will put all his eggs in one basket and fish the bait to win fare play yet Harold loves the bait but couldn't catch on it. now the baits not that fickle that one peg you can catch on it and not the other surely in fact Harold caught better on big maggot and caught everything that swims i wasn't on the best peg yet i still caught some dumpy little roach but couldn't get a bite on hemp
the problem is squatt fishing you have to catch more or less every fish from two to the ounce to 3oz with the odd bonus 6oz to 10oz thrown in to make a winning weight yet on our canal you can quite easily be blown a way in the last half a hour on hemp whats your ideas
some anglers i know put a pot full in at the start and don't feed it again until they catch on it then others feed it as often as squatt
is it a team bait or not

Aint had chance to pen owt yet.......... Image  :P

But start off with aint the 'myth' of hemp just being a summer bait now dispelled?

Remember some winter matches on the cut at Little Onn back in the 80s when some anglers from Polesworth (I think it was) started taking the field apart with double figure bags (3-4lb was a decent weight on the cut them days) on the seed...........

Couldn't agree crappity smack more, hemp will catch all year.

Problem is roach ain't got over spawning yet, hence I reckon a week or two. You might sack up in the evenings though :D

I caught on hemp for an hour from a decent peg on the T&M at middlewich last month, i weighed 8.12.0 ...... prob was the Bream were cleaning off on the stick ups and wall pegs so i came nowhere ! Image Image Image

I really dont think the stamp (hemp roach) are there in numbers anymore on loads of venues up and down the country because of cormorant predation, hemp seems very hit & miss over the last 2 or 3 seasons , mostly miss .... hope im wrong ! :-/

Here's a thought !
Many years ago I asked my best mate Pete Jayes why he caught on hemp when others didn't.
His simple reply was that he fed it on his best line, the line that he thought was the best for roach at that time of year.
Now I am sure some may do too, but how many have it as a back up line, and could be guilty of not feeding the hemp line as good as the squatt line !!!!!
Food for thought !
At this time of year on the river at Evesham, if we have a good few weeks of weather the roach always feed earlier and on Saturday one bloke had 3lb of 12 roach on seed late on to make his weight up.
I will always wait to hear of this news and there will be a certain chance I will take out a maggot line / worm/caster line to make way for a dedicated hemp line.
Come on you redfins !!!!!!!! (ok then maybe a few ugly fish aswell ! )

i had a top afternoon on the canal yesterday put one or two theories to bed about my hemp fishing
i only took hemp nothing else fished one line in front of me and another down the peg but over
the canal was coloured and the boat traffic quite heavy
the peg in front of me i loose fed all the time little and often and the peg to my right i potted one big pot and left it
i set up 4 rigs Chianti 3x8 with a little cut of the stem which gave me 6x13s down the line
i set up a 4x10s chianti with 12s spread out
then i set up a pb14 4x12 with a bulk and a 4x10 with a bulk
it took me 20 mins before i caught a fish on the loose fed line but had plenty of indications either dropping it in slowly or holding it back i soon found they were about 4in off bottom and started to put one or two together i then tried the bulk rig same depth again plenty of indications but not so many positive baits and fish the spread out rig whether it was the lighter or the heavier was a lot better on return of fish to the net a couple of boats messed my peg up so when it settled i tried the second peg where i had dumped the pot full i first tried it with the strung out rig but it didn't get a bite brought it back over the loose fed line and a fish was the result
so i then picked up the lighter bulk rig lowered in and instantly resulted in the best fish it was a lot more positive and even the heavier bulk rig was better and i felt this peg was a lot better easier presentation and straight to the point
ok i know i was there on my own and perhaps the time of day helped but i still fed the loose fed line and never fed the potted line once and it was at least 60% maybe 80% better than the loose fed the roach were smaller on the loose fed line by a country mile
it was really nice just do something that in my own mind was a real learning kerb
i never really had confidence in the potting as i thought with the boats it would just get covered up and become lost but now i can see it stays there and its all bout pegs if you haven't got many roach in your peg your not going to magic them into your peg and bag with hemp Image

20 odd years back on an adjoing section of our canal the hemp men used to 'dump' and then trickle it in over the top. But again a different cut with no boat traffic :-/

(I say 'dump' - there were no potting in cups them days it was 20 pouches of the stuff :D )

Be interesting if you experiment again Joffie if you dump and loose feed over it........?
