hello all,
I've been asked to fish with farnborough juniors on Saturday 3rd July. Its is the NFA Junior National on the Trent And Mersey CANAL :o :o Image Image
Dan doesn't do canals, Im not that goodImage Image
Anyway, I couldn't say no, I can't wait, It should be a great expierience and I am hoping to learn a thing or two. Never fished this canal as it is very far away in Derby ;) (about 3 hours I reckon) I have 2 practice days to get the 0.06 rigs ready and to see what bait they want ::) Image
I am really looking forward to it, roll on July Image Image

Give me a shout Dan when you can find out where the sections are !
I live local and know the canal well !
Unfortunately there are not many open matches on it now, 10 years ago it was a different story !!!!
Anyway there are plenty of area's that hold bonus fish so find out where its being pegged and we will take it from there !!!!!!!

Dan/CWH

Unless it has been altered the Junior National is centred on Lowes Lane, Swarkestone.

Proposed sections are Stenson Lock down, Arleston Road and Barrow Road.

Bloodworm and joker are barred so that makes it easier on the bait bill Image Image Image Image Image

You will soon get it sorted Dan; keep feeding matey.

You are also gonna need an animal rig as there will probably be chub pegs in-below stenson bubble-in the bushes and also down to the Wragley? Pride of Derby juniors had a match on Barrow roadside 2 weeks ago and a 3lb chub was caught-again bushes in the middle of the section.

Suggest 12 laggy 4lb straight thro to a 16 super spade!

Apart from that Dodge spot on Image

Boat traffic will be heavy with 2 locks and 3 marinas in the area

Good luck!

Dan,

Dodge is dead on with those rigs; you'll be catching bits well over on the far shelf. Keep shotting on your rigs dead simple.
You will need a heavier rig for caster/worm but the peg will usually dictate that. Hopefully CWH can pinpoint a few of the feature section pegs for you. Your bonus fish are more likely chub and the odd big perch rather than carp. Image

If you have a word with any of the Farnborough senior team the rigs are virtually the same as they used in Div One last year.

No, you have spare top kits with black / purple hydro for lumps  Image Image  they only come into play if draw opposite a bush / stick ups or a boat dan  Image Image that where big fish live on canals ..... make some rigs up on 0.15 / 0.17 with a 16s / 14s strong hook, a lot of lads use the Drennan Carbon Feeder hooks for canal lumps  ;) pegs like these are few are far between on canals but there are always a few and they are national winning pegs  ;) Squatt and g/bait approach will get you good team points from most pegs  Image Image

PS dan .....dont let the boats put you off, roach usually feed better when the canal is towing a bit ;) Image

Right here goes !!!!
Dan I hope this will be of use to you and apologise now if I go too deep!!!
I will get the bad bit over with quick and then we will move onto all the goodstuff !!!!!
A new supersize marina has now been finished and is full of boats already !!! This is at Willington/Findern which will effect you, remember this will effect the way you fish it and it will be the same for everyone!!!
The canal will be busy on the water and on the towpath, so take care with your stuff, keep it out the way and have a look when you ship back !!!
The growth on the towpath is high at present in area's, so seeing cyclists can be hard, also keep your roller out of the way, else that will get mowed down !!!!
Most of the canal you are fishing has Hawthorn bushes behind you so if you cannot go over them an end cap for your pole is a good idea.
The width of the canal varies but for that length 14.5m / 16m is the norm, I would take a 17.5m ext. just in case.
It will naturally go left to right where you are fishing, but will run in both ways when the locks get operated, and they will !!!!
Dan this will be a busy match, because if you are not catching well you will need to pinch fish off various lines in order to do well in your section.
The canal is relatively fair in relation to team fishing and although chub may play apart individually, it will be a busy team weight of small fish that collect the team prize.
Lets start with the bait list :
1pt good quality white squatts a must !!!
1/4 of red squatt
1/4 of mixed pinkie
1/4 of white maggots
1/2 pint casters
1/4 kilo den worms
1pt hemp
2 kilo of groundbait (sensas gardons fine/ lake is a good mix).
The main species will be roach, gudgeon, perch, chub, skimmers in that order.
Right lets get the chub out of the way first !!!!
Because I do not know if you are going as far as Swarkestone bubble I will say that the main chub pegs are approx. 150 yds from the lock at Stenson and go for 100yds approx. The other chub area is in the bushes at Barrow road which in the middle of the length and is approx 3 pegs.
Odd chub will show in lots of area's but these fish cannot be relied upon.
This would be my spin on a typical T & M peg with a team match in mind.
Top kits required:
2 top 2's with 2's elastic.
1 top 2 with 3/4's elastic.
1 top 3 with 4/5's elastic.
1 top 2 with no prisoners elastic tightened up.
A short whip. (1 to 3m).
I will start from my side going over !!!!!!
First, make sure your keepnet is staked out on the inside to prevent your net going where you will be fishing!!!!!
My inside line will be close as possible in order to keep away from the boats !!!! This could be anything from 1/2 a metre to 2 meters out depending on plumbing up, as 2 1/2 feet is good, in some pegs you will have 4 feet close in which will be better, just have a good plumb around and try to avoid sharp drop offs.
Feed small nuggets of groundbait with red squatts, little and often and this should catch you gudgeon, odd perch, odd small roach.
This is a line you can start on if you feed it first and it will allow you to feed your squatt line and get it primed before you go on it.
This line is usually good for the first 20 mins sometimes alot longer but just keep looking around you, if quality roach are being caught over then you must follow !!!!!
My personal preference is red squatt feed and red pinkie for gudgeon, you will also catch perch and roach on this.
When you do leave this line keep feeding this as you should be able to come back to this and pinch a few fish throughout the match.
An ideal rig is an inverted pear about 0.4 gram bulked and 4 no. 12 droppers. A good tip is to have a long antenna on the float, bulk to the top of body then space out the droppers and read the shot on the float, the bulk should be approx 10 inch's from the hook then the droppers equally spaced out. This sounds a bit over the top for gudgeon but if you learn to read the bites by doing this you will catch the fish a lot quicker trust me on that ! Gudgeon do come off the bottom and hold ups are common on this cut in summer.
0.11mm main line to 0.07mm hooklength, 22 hook fine wire barbless is about right on the whip for this type of fishing.
I will talk about the track and over tomorrow if I have any energy left !!!!!
Later Dan !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Squatt right over and by your feet unless you get a feature then you might have to try for a lump.Bait for a lump will probably be half a dendro-chop a few up and pot in with some casters.

The feature pegs will fish themselves it will be the barren bits where the squatt scores well.If you get a lull in the boats around dinner time you may get a couple of bonus roach down the track on maggot so keep trickling a few in.

Dan,
I understand your concern regarding the teams methods, it's just my spin on this venue. You have 2 days practice so give all methods a try.
A valid point in my view is that while many other methods have come to the fore in recent years, canal fishing apart from boats has changed very little, they are still caught in the same places relatively on the same baits !!!!!!!
Here's the rest of the info ;
Down the track. This is for odd big roach.
Top 3, 4/5 elastic.
Like Pete has said its white maggot. I put a full pot of hemp spread out at approx. 1 o'clock in the deepest part of the canal, approx 5/7 metres out depending on the width. A 2 foot area is good, after this just trickle a few white maggots every 5 mins, I would not look at this for maybe 2hrs, the best time could be mid match or when there is a lull in the boat traffic (If they stop for dinner).
Rig for this is a pole stick 0.4 gram approx. Bulk with three droppers, fish about 6inch overdepth as a guide.
Over rigs.
The rigs that Dodge mentioned are spot on.
The important part is where you fish and feed.
Like Pete said the chub pegs will look after themselves but a word of warning keep your options open on these pegs as not all the chub pegs will produce !!!!!
When fishing over at this time of year the best lines are up the shelf, even better if you have two shelfs so you have a flat bit ! and tight over.
My deep line will be 2 and a half feet to 3 feet depending on the shelfs but I will try and avoid steep drop offs. This could be 9 to 12m depending on the width.
My furthest line will be in 1 foot of water, the tighter over the better.
The deep line will be fed straight in front of me with 3 balls of groundbait packed with squatt. I also like to put a half cup of hemp in aswell. Don't form them too tight, as they need to break up quickly.
I would feed this line all day and none stop !. 10 to 15 squatts every minute.
I will try and have two lines over, one with a small pot of hemp and the other with a ball of groundbait again packed with squatt.
This gives me options of trying hemp or turning it into another squatt line.
This tight over line might seem very shallow but trust me there will be a good part of the match where it will be the ONLY place to catch.
So there it is, a good tip is when feeding your deep line with squatt make sure you over spray to feed your far line aswell.
Make sure you can ship back smoothly it will save you loads of time, a coat over the bush or a good hole in it !!!!!
Try using 2 feet of line instead of short lengths, this will help when the tow picks up. This will cut down on the tangles.
Good luck Dan ! as I said it's my spin on it, give em a try !!!
One last thing if you are going to practice it would be a good idea to do it on a Saturday same time as your match because the boat traffic will be greater at the weekend and it will serve as a guide as what to expect.

Thanks again cwh. All you help is taken in and really appreciated by both me and my dad. As I usually fish for average sized carp, my kits are chopped down with a no.3 maver internal, so I only have 2 top kits and 1 lump top kitImage And yes, the practice matches are on a Saturday and Sunday. Is it not a bit dangerous shipping back accross the path? :-/
Sorry about all the questions
Thankyou
Dan

That means CWH will have to do all those tactics for you again Image Image Image

Dan,
Yes you are right it can be a bit dodgy shipping back, but hopefully if someone puts some signs out letting the public know there is a match it will slow them down a bit !
The trouble is sometimes its just not possible to ship 13m down the towpath mate.
As for top kits, do a bit of work round the house and maybe a top 2 might turn up !!!!!!!!!!
Anymore questions just ask and I will do my best to answer them.
Later.
