Curse match 6 2010 - Cooking down the Cut
Curse match 6 2010 - Cooking down the Cut
Well I suspected that there may be a few interested onlookers at the results of this match as it was a bit of a precursor for the Site Championship a month away being on the clubs waters, the Wyrley & Essington canal.
Having gleamed a bit more info about the cut from Diamond Neckless and Sprucey who’d had quite a conversation with DN a fortnight earlier I thought I may have it ‘sussed’ in order to get the heads down of a few fish.
Sprucey and KOD had pegged out and with everyone ‘locked in’ an early draw was made. The walking wounded drew first, taking up the first 3 pegs either side of the bridge. That left me to call out that pegs 9 & 10 would be on the scales today.
Where did I want to be? Well the wides - pegs 8 to 13 - were supposedly the ‘form’ pegs along with 1-3 up by the radar gate or down in the 20s.
With just myself, Sprucey & KOD to go, peg 5 stuck to my donny. Never fished in that area, but had seen fish in the past round there.
But had to laff when Sprucey pulled out 9 to end up on the scales yet again.
Golden pegs 2 & 7 came out of the hat…………hum………..cut crack Hotlips - victor on our last match last season down here - could be a danger, but in all honesty I thought the GP would be safe and the wides would blow peg 2 away.
So off I trots to set up. Just setting up and Mark T - captor of a few crocks out of the cut - wanders by and we exchange a few pleasantries between us.
Whilst the cabbages and lily pads are evident and coming up, they are still a week or two behind schedule after the poor spring we’ve had
But today it’s cooking being the hottest day of the year so far - it’s in the 80’s and the towpath is busier than usual……….
The off. Now armed with that ‘info’ I fed my usual two punch lines……….although I didn’t really expect them to produce in this heat and another line with 4 babies heads and caster………them tincas can give you a bit of a run-around, so hopefully a few - well more than a few - bream would settle over it and I’d be able to give Joffie and co the ‘heads up’ for the match.
First look on the inside punch line and a bite. A lift, start shipping back and a 6oz skimmer comes off the hook and zips away. Must have taken his brothers with him cuss that was that……..
A look on the longer line and nowt. 15 mins in and I’m struggling, whilst Cotti to my right has snatched 4 punch roach one after the other.
Back short, this time on pinkie and a few bits are snatched to avoid the dreaded DNW.
………half hour in and a boat comes round the bend…………straight over those babies heads - what difference would that make? What should I do now? Give ‘em some more? When it had settled I had a quick gander on it with nowt to show, so I banged in - well cupped in - another 4 ‘big’ balls.
Meanwhile Sprucey had rung me - ‘Sprucey 1, Tincas nil’ was the message………..hum I think to myself, well the GP is probably safe today, teammate Sprucey’s gunna end up with 30-40lb.
I’m struggling my nuts off, whilst Rich C to my right is sitting on an aquarium of rudd in his cabbages and he’s snatching them on his top two.
Meanwhile round the corner, whilst I can’t actually see him, Hotlips on the golden peg hooks 3 or 4 lackie stretchers that are all successfully netted.
It’s now nearly two hours in. Bits aint gunna protect that GP cuss Hotlips has now had 5, so I decide it’s time to sit on the caster and double caster over that groundbait.
First look and a sail away straight away………….
Lift and the lacky come out - fish on.
Shipping slowly back…………
It comes off
Bait back on I ship out and I’m about to ring Sprucey to tell him I’ve just had one come off and find out whether he’s in double figures yet and the float goes straight way again
Fish on - the pegs ‘solid’ now I think to myself
Safely netted but it’s only a small tinca around the lb mark - never mind, some of his big brothers must surely be knocking about.
Next look………………and nowt after 10 mins.
Meanwhile Cotti decides to open his white bag, get snipping (cuss that’s what Hotlips is sitting on) and not long after nets a better sample round the 3lb mark, wiping me out.
Time for some more snap? Yep lets give em some more. In fact during the match I get through two trays of the stuff.
But it’s all to no avail…………as OBI pops down for a ‘reconnaissance’ ;)and we have a good chat, bream and tench are swimming left and right past me.
Surely they can’t find that snap I’ve put in irresistible can they?
But they can. I’m sure others must have seen specimen fish cruise past them too during the match……….probably with other things on their minds
So 3 hours slip away as I sat on the double caster apart from a 3 minute stretch of the legs (and reefed again)…………for nowt.
Here’s the results of the stretch of the legs - just a couple of pickies for Joffie as I don’t want to steal Sprucey’s thunder………
Hotlips looking in a sulky mood - smile man, the GP is in your grasp
Cotti next door
Zorro
Was my beastie rig - all of 2.6lb straight through to a 16 - off putting for those ‘canny’ fish That’s what kept crossing my mind…………I needn’t have really fretted about it, cuss I later learnt that Hotlips must have borrowed a rig off Malc………………and had fished 10lb straight through - or it might have been 12lb, he couldn’t actually remember what rating his tow rope was.
I shouted up - was it still hot or what - and wandered how Juan Chub who had posted elsewhere on these forums that he was looking forward to this one had got on………….
Well here’s how he did………….
PEG
1 YAMO 6.8.14
2 HOTLIPS 25.0.14 5 tench, 1 skimmer and bits
3
4 COTTI 3.7.10 1 tench and a few bits
5 TK 2.2.7 1 much smaller tench and a few bits
6 R CASHMORE 4.12.15 All bits - rudd
7 ZORRO 1.4.15
8 HAHA 0.10.14
9 SPRUCEY 3.4.11 1 tench and a few bits(?)
10 G CASHMORE 1.12.3
11 PHIL B 0.2.8
12 BRAMBLES 0.1.7
13 TOMMY COOPER 5.12.8 2 bream
14 HARRY THE HITMAN 2.0.4
15 F K 4.7.9 1 tench and a few bits(?)
16 GEOFF DNW
17 MRV 1.7.9
18 BIG BAZ 3.13.11 1 tench only
19 KOD 2.4.8
20
21 MILLIE DNW Lost a 'massive un'
22 JUAN CHUB 10.15.13 3 tench - presume some bits?
23 VESTE 1.10.14
24 JONAH 12.13.7 4 tench and lost 4(?)
So hat’s off to Hotlips who walked away with the pools and £260 golden peg money - as you say that canal certainly owes you nowt……………..and no we aint having 15 matches on it next year.
Note for Joffie and co - whilst I’m not sure what 3rd placed Juan Chub caught on - perhaps he’ll post and let us know how his day went - 1st and 2nd were using the white bag bait……….. so it looks like I’ve gotta either get the spade out or even worse still open the wallet for our Site Match

Curse match 6 2010 - Cooking down the Cut
Good write up TK, after catching all my fish in opening ten minuets (Two bits) The hi lite of my day was watching a frog swim over the cut and hoping a pike didn't get him, thankfully he made safely to the bankside vegetation

Well, I left my worms at home so it was a bed of casters up against the weeds on the far bank and double caster over them.whilst I’m not sure what 3rd placed Juan Chub caught on
I started off down the track on my big mag line to get a 'backup' weight. It worked and I put about just over a pound of bits in the net in the 1st 45min. As soon as I tried the back line I had my first tench. Followed closely by my 2nd and then a lost fish soon after. A quiet half hour passed before my 3rd and final Tench.
I think had I started on the back line, I probably could have had a couple more Tincas out so I missed a trick there :(

aahh the sun,the sea,the sand.
( well it was for heinzer who went on holiday saturday )
the rest just baked at fishley
so after t k's phone call on wednesday,it was arranged for me to be his method of conveance for the day.
i hope this wouldn't mean i was cursed for the day !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
at the appointed hour t.k. was collected and we where soon arriving at the gates at fishley.
with t.k. left at the gate to act as doorman, till everyone arrived.
myself and kod were sent to peg out.
while pegging out it became obvious that kod likes to peg "feature pegs",where as i've always been told to just count
paces .so this we did, knowing you ain't gonna please everyone.
i fancied either end pegs, with a lot of fish on 23 and 24 when we pegged out,1 and 2 also being a good draw.
after being fleeced of money, the draw took place .
t.k. asked which pegs should do the weighin.
you know when you should not say anything, well this was one of those times.
10 and 11 says i,t.k. retorts that 11 as been used for one of the short walks.ok says i 10 and 9 then says i
yes .....i drew 9,that makes every match i have fished and we have done our own weighin
i have been on the scales.
i'm bringing this up at the next a.g.m.,how can the official photographer for cashnore's a.c.,do the weighin and manage
not to get water on his lenses.
i think i should be exempt from this activity.
on to peg 9,on my left i had geoff cashmore who would be helping me weighin and on my right was haha who wouldn't be
i set up three rigs for this peg one @6mtrs just over the cabbages, one @11mtrs for down the track and one @14mtrs for
across.
after half an hour i rang t.k. to tell him one nil to me. having had one bite and landing a tinca, talk about premature.
two hours later t.k. rings to ask if i've had any more, and to tell me hotlips as had three.
but in this time all i could muster was one rudd.!!!!!!!!!!!!!
unfortunately that's how my match went, just catching odd fish till the end
now at the end of the match,i've packed up pretty quickly and having set the scales up go passed geoff up to peg 24,
telling geoff not to rush packing up
at 24 i get jonah to get his fish up and into the weigh basket, put them on the scales and then realise that the end that
hold's the weight's ain't there.
great.....now having to backtrack to my peg in the process passing geoff who is coming to help.
back to my peg said counter balance found with mr v's help (in was still in the bag )
back up to peg 24 to start weighin.
if that's isn't the curse working i don't know what is ???????????
t.k. will have posted by know,so it's on to the piccies for joff. ok
