Ice breaking esscapades
Following on from the grueller escapades of some of you on Saturday, here are a few pearlers I remember from the "good old days" regarding breaking out.
The lad who tried to break the 4 inch ice on a Burton Winter league match. He tied one of them housebricks with holes in it to a length of rope, swung it at 90mph, the brick broke in half in mid air, one half shot across onto the Southbound A38 and the other went into vertical orbit and came down hitting him on the back of the head (I didnt laugh much )
The guy on the Rugeley Winter league who walked out on about 6" of ice, laughing at everybody with his petrol powered Styl saw. Started it up, touched the ice and it shot back shredding his moon boot and nearly taking his leg off.
Another numpty on the Rugeley WL who walked out with a saw, cut the ice arond him and only realised what he had done when evryone around him fell about laughing. He got slightly wet when he tried to get back and the "ice square" tipped up rapidly.
There are lots more, but I will leave it for some others to add their stories. I am sure Bill Yards knows a few more from around the Winter Leagues, and Big Baz if you ever get him to sign up on here.

He's signed up on here now MrV, but I don't think he knows how to switch the tin box on

Ice breaking esscapades
In the old days of the AT Upper Trent WL most teams used to practise the day before didn't matter what the venue was. We were on the canal at Alrewas (day before) and the ice was fairly thick. A couple of our lads, Joe Harrison and Paul Aston went out and axed their ice holes out. They both did the same thing and cut the ice round where they were standing. Both of them were balanced on their own piece of ice before the inevitable happened. It were dead funny.
One League round at Weston, near Shardlow, Paul Aston was in the next section to me so he cleared his peg then come down and did mine (he had one of those old one piece waterproof jobbies). He was in the canal pushing my last chunk of ice away and the whistle went. I dropped in and my float went straight down and I had a gudgeon before he got out of the cut!! Couldn't believe it. Happy Days

Ice breaking esscapades
A few years back me and mate of mine Richard Stanton fished a canal match on the shroppy, the ice was at least 4 inches thick and it seemed even thicker where I drew out in the middle of nowhere. After a few over the head swings with my ice breaker I decided that a underarm swing would be better way of protruding my breaker into the middle of the cut, unfortunately after one all mighty back swing I forgot to let it go, it came round a smack clean in the mush, when I finally picked myself of the floor not knowing whether to laugh or cry and reeling with embarrassment. I staggered down to my mate to get him to assess the damage, when he finally wiped the tears of laughter from his eyes my lips looked liked i'd overdosed on Botox.
A very painful lesson well learnt.

Ice breaking esscapades
I think I've mentioned this one before but not too many years ago there used to be a few opens on the Anglesey Arm cut (they used to be good). Rolled up there one cold day, we parked up a bit from the bridge, and walked back to the cut bridge. My peg was froze over (it all looked free from the bridge) so I walked up to borrow the car keys then walked back to the car to fetch the ice breaker. This is a heavy thing with a bladed chain on it. I was dragging it down the road to the canal bridge and all of a sudden got surrounded by flashing lights and sirens. There had been a break in up the road and I was number one suspect!! When I told them was I was up to there was quite a bit of yellow stream taking going on.

I hope I don’t bore you all with my fishing escapades but I have many tales of wow when it comes to me and my love of fishing.
Last year 08 the day after boxing day to be exact the temperature was just above freezing, when a few of us descended on to the canal at rushall for a little knock up.
20 minutes in fishing my top3 + 1 I unshipped to swing in a small roach ,as I put my number 4 section down beside me a sudden gust of wind blew it straight into the canal I watched with amazement as my only no 4 section of Shimano Aspire filled up with water and when down like the Titanic.
After several attempts to retrieve it with landing net,I apologised to my fellow anglers’ either side of me, striped off down to my long johns ,with them rolled up to just above thighs in I went…… you must be mad said the lads on the adjacent pegs pegs as they clicked away taking photos on their phones, even two walkers stopped to take photos. Now that is taking the P especially as one asked me to smile I’ll leave my reply to your imagination. By now I was up to my neck in freezing cold water and up to be knees in silt.
Well after a 15minutes of searching up and down the track I must have been close to getting hyperthermia finally I thought F**k I moved towards banks just as I was about to get out I trod on it and broke it in 2 ,, would you Adam and Eve it.
As I got out my body was that red I looked like I’d had 2weeks in Tenerife without the factor 15 my d*ck resembled a shrivelled up pinky and to top it off the chap on the next peg offered me a towel that was no bigger than a dish cloth.
Did I call it a day? I don’t give up that easy. I telescoped it and carried on
That’s dedication for you. Did I win,,,, NO
I’ve just booked a course of Golf lessons……… as if !!
