Bloodworm and joker

I have probably fished bloodworm and joker longer than anyone on this site. This season I decided not to fish it at all and to be honest my weights, such as they are, are possibly a touch higher or at least no worse.
I also realise that the bait is needed on some of the canals you fish although I think you would be suprised of the outcome if it was not! I think you would still have the same winners but the guys at the 'wrong end' of the weights may have less.

Anyway my question is this: Whether you fish one or two matches a weekend how much is your bait bill?

I am asking this for a very positive reason; I can assure you no names will be mentioned, except perhaps my own!

In the first month or so you can spend £30 a week on bait which is ridiculous, especially when its hard to keep and you definately don't need to use blood and joker, when the weather goes colder £15 is about what i spend and usually have some left over which builds up over a few weeks. Using joker before November is ridiculous.

£11 for match pack give or take a few coppers.....its my first season on the stuff its an eye opener from punch and choppie serious raise in a bait bill for sure .

Thanks for that Babe, nice to see a match angler starting this friendly debate off but don't forget you may need other baits (casters) with b&j.

bill some of the lads went on the loughborough canal one had some B/J one fished bread and one fished caster they fished three very good pegs and fished it every peg no gaps so the two either end had a spare peg one end peg fished the B/J the middle peg fished caster and the other end peg fished bread this was the down stream peg 9lb came to b/j 14lb to caster and nearly 20lb on bread do i think you need it NO not untill it turns really cold
remember last year we were all freezing by now
the other point is fuel at £5 a gallon our fishing habbits will have to change and i think b/j will suffer a little

I purposely never mentioned travel costs as personally I would go fishing anyway and do, match or no match

Don't read too much into this thread, I was only interested in what anglers are prepared to pay for their bait for the weekend.

I'd like to pay as little as possible,at the moment i'm spending the same as larry which is about £8.75 for a 1/2 kilo of joker and a couple of quid for a hooker pack.some venues may require other baits plus the B+J,casters,worms etc.On average i reckon my bait bill for each canal match is around £14-£15
From my own point of view,once pools,petrol costs,brekkie,pint are added on its about £45-£50 a match

Best not let the wife find out.

OK bill
the chap with b/j spent around £16
the lad on caster £6 with his bits and bobs
the lad on bread would of spent crappity smack hall as i gave him some bread that was out of date perhaps £3 on bits and bobs

Joff, why did'nt you put another date on the bread then sold it to the angler for the full price, you normally do !

Cost is relative, if you are fishing a b/joker lge / match you have to have it to compete, it is true other baits do catch fish but once a venue has seen joker the fish become preoccupied with it, take a look at the Stainy ..... you need at least 1/2 a kilo of joker plus 2 kilo of groundbait per match to compete !!! PROPER FISHING

£8 for half a kilo of joker is decent value especially the russian stuff

10 bread heads fishing against 10 joker anglers in winter on most canals would get beat 9 times out of
10 imho

You can go and watch a premier league football match every weekend which only last 90 mins ........ it would probably set you back at least £60...... ticket, a couple of pints summat to eat and travel ,

I made my mind up yonks ago what i want to do each weekend whether my match costs just £15 or £50

same here dodge. don't watch or play footy anymore coz it got too expensive. i want to go fishing as much as i can wether it costs me 2 quid or 50 quid and to fish/compete with the best anglers it goes without saying that it will not be cheap. i hate to think how much i have spent over the years on bait but i know i would have been a lot poorer for the experiences and friends i have made in that time. to me personally the price of bait is totally irrelavent.

I think some of you guys are reading far too much into this thread.

I have spent masses on bait (all sorts) for two weekend matches.

We all do what we like doing. That is the nature of the game and there is nowt wrong with that.

I was only asking what your weekend bait bill is.
I don't care if you fish bloodworm and joker, bread maggots, worms dog sh!t or that evil word pellet. Just asking a question, nowt sinister in it..... honestly

Bill,my bill includes other baits, i never buy more than a kilo for a weekend so the first price includes g/b leam worms and casters, once winter sets in ibuy half a kilo every week and a kilo 1 week in 3 plus a pint of casters,my summer bill would be £25 a weekend,3 bags g/b 3 pints squatts, half maggotts,quarter of pinkies and 2 pints of casters plus worms

Here's mine for the Soar Winter League. The sections are very diverse, ie Roach, Perch, Bream, Tench, bleak, Chub.
1/2 Kilo of dendies, 100 lobworms (picked at night),1 pint of casters, 3 pints of maggots, 1/2 of squatts, 1/2 of pinkies, 1 pint of hemp, bread punch and punch crumb, 2 kilo of groundbait for Roach mix, 1 kilo of fish meal base groundbait for bream and sometimes a little bit of steak and mince if it is low and clear ! Oh and a few halibut pellets !
Obviously not all this is used and re-fridged, but as you do not know which section you are on it is the kitchen sink !

OK, My simple reason for asking is that I do spend a bit of time coaching youngsters at various venues, including cuts.
A few of these kids have some amazing natural ability; they are obviously very interested as they don't have to be there in the first place.
I was thinking (dangerous I know) of finding some way of getting the odd youngster in the very occasional match but when you mention the costs involved the parents just don't want to know.
When I was running matches regular youngsters could fish them totally free for the section money; that came out of the peg fees. I still think this is the best idea as it encourages them.

Before any smart wobbly cheeks says that the matches will be saturated with kids it don't happen, you get one or two -- occasionally.

Cost is stopping kids from getting into match fishing, of that there is no doubt. Anyone come up with any other better suggestions????????????????????????

Very well said Bill,its a shame but lots of kids with enthusiasm and a bit of talent are prevented from fishing matches because the cost is prohibitive.Our club used to have nearly a hundred junior members,its now less than 10 even though the membership is free.

Yep you sure did Bill.
A genuine well done mate for what you do, but unfortunately its not all about costs, kids have alot more choice of hobbys, sports etc than we did and because of this the numbers will never be as high as in the 70,s and 80,s.
