'The Riddle of Pipehill Fishery'

Sometimes, everything is not what it seems. If only we could see the blindingly obvious, things would be much clearer.

But before I go on, I must bring something to your attention. TK would never mention it himself.

This match nearly didn’t go ahead at all. Tense negotiations were conducted in the early hours, involving the local constabulary, Scotland Yard & MI5, with TK being the only Cashmore representative. Not an easy task with a good few beers inside after the Friday night out.

Three mystery anglers had been spotted practising in the lead up, wearing balaclavas, resulting in the pool becoming subject to a ‘severe’ terror alert in the final hours.  :o

Wide ranging anti-terror powers had been invoked, with TK only being notified after he'd been
'up the club’.

It took many personal assurances by TK as to the character of individual Cashmore members and further promises of an orderly match before the alert level was reduced, down from ‘severe’ to ‘slight’, finally allowing the match to go ahead.

If you thought TK didn’t look his usual self at the draw, now you know why.

Much to his eternal credit, and for which we owe him a debt of gratitude, he had demands of his own.

Only after he finally secured the removal of the machine gun from the observation post, on health and safety grounds, did he allow members to fish.

Moving on, I feel it my duty here to tell you all, that I was one of those practising incognito anglers, which also explains my mid-match walk round to TK, to confess my sins. The balaclava was borrowed.

As to the identity of the other anglers, I have no idea. The police would only say that they are looking for a ‘red, post office van type vehicle, with windows’ in connection to one suspect, but said it had completely disappeared off their radar. The third mystery angler is as yet, also unaccounted for (?).  Image

As a side issue, the local chief inspector has asked me to enlist the help of Cashmores members in what he described as an altogether more pressing matter, namely the theft of the local station lavatory. An officer was quoted as saying ‘they have absolutely nothing to go on’ and asked for anyone with information to come forward.

Returning to the match, it was a poor day, results wise, personally. My unofficial trip to the pool had been a rip-roaring sucesss with everything tried, coming off spectacularly. When I drew, left-handed again and pulled out a peg next to my practise one, I could not believe my luck ! I already knew of the underwater gravel bar (!) and that it was stuffed with fish !

Shame they didn’t show.  :'( I struggled and plugged away with my previously successful methods, convinced the skimmers and carp would show, whilst all around me were picking off small fish. I had such no luck. Let it be a lesson to you all !

In the last 15 minutes I had three small carp to add to my few bits and plenty more indications that convinced me fish were now, at last,  present and gave me the impetus to stay on, amid mumbled references of ‘nutter’. The ensuing couple of hours though, were a much more uplifting experience, but that’s another story.

As I walked round the pool at the end of the match, I crossed the large connecting pipe running under the path and that joined the two bottom ends of the horsehoe shaped pool. The very pipe that the winner had dragged his carp out of !

Sitting across from the pipe, on the hill was ‘YAMO’ (PJ)..

Put together the PIPE, THE HILL and MASTER ANGLER, PAUL JEFFERY and there was only ever going to be one outcome !  Image

Riddle, what riddle ?

Next stop, Spring pool.  :)

Brilliant read Mark glad you sacked up afterwards, it just goes to show that those fish are wise to a match and come out to play when things quieten down. I hope to draw next to you on one of the matches.

Aint got a lot to say about this one.

Budgie threw a look of amazement and disbelief at me when I asked him to peg it out when he finally rolled up, well it was 10 minutes earlier than the last match :P.

The was some prior ‘concern’ about the pegging with reports that people would be sword fighting, so I ‘limited’ guest places, and indeed turned down a couple of late requests in the week. Image Lesson learnt

I needn’t have worried……. anybody on ‘certain’ pegs who plumbed up properly would realize that you could quite easily have another angler fishing opposite……..the only issue that would arise is that if both anglers fished say 12 mtrs or more……….and not to the features in their pegs.

Was fishing it blind today, not having seen the place. So didn’t know whether it was good, bad or indifferent. However on the way to my peg, HAHA predicted the 4 pegs that would ‘dominate’ the match……….

Having plumbed up and attempted to give a fellow forumite (almost opposite) a bit of quickly learnt ‘news’   Image  Image Image about the venue, I was ‘quite happy’ with what I’d discovered and how I would approach the match.

6 top kits set up to cover a range of depths, and ‘methods’ and off we went.

But things didn’t go to plan and for the next 5 hours I had a ‘Mugger moment’ and struggled for bites………..even silvers on the mag and pinkie were in short supply. Think I’d have weighed more up the cut………..that certainly was Cotti’s thoughts too

I also took confession half way through off a fellow member who just seemed had to get something off his chest – the same member who had (I thought) expressed surprise when I showed him one of my rigs and plummet before the off. Image

Whilst the  Image was obviously present with a number of members, I don’t think we saw the true potential of the venue………ok so it’s not a southern ton up venue, but I ‘liked’ the place, it’ll look a lot more picturesque in a month or two………….and I’d certainly give it another go……….

Well I’ve just knocked up the results courtesy of KOD’s scan of the sheet he sent me and it makes some bizarre reading – certainly a ‘staggered’ peg out - it looks like some anglers got battered off the next peg – well some did, but a typical example is  looking at MarkV and Zorro – on 5 and 6  - when in actual fact Zorro on the ‘next’ peg was actually fishing a different part of the pool……….so I might as well just left the results scrambled as you can’t read too much into it

But here it is, the moment you’ve all been waiting for…….

PEG ANGLER WEIGHT

2 MGB 8.10.0
3 HOTLIPS 8.8.0
4 ROBERTO D 0.11.0

22 YAMO 25.6.0
23 RICH C 16.8.0
24 COTTI 2.2.0
25 HEINZER 6.2.0

As for HaHa’s initial prediction……….. let’s just say it turned out that three of the top 4 came from those pegs he mentioned.

Oh – and by the way – flyer peg 1 didn’t come out the bag  Image Image Image

You will have to do something about getting rid of the Image Image TK.
I had a ‘Mugger moment’

I wonder if that phrase will stick and be used to describe struggling for bites in the future. :D :D

Budgie from your peg did you fish over to the tip of the middle strip? From that peg you fish to the middle post of the fence as when the features come up thats one of the large lilly pad areas and it usually holds some of the bigger carp ;)

Did yammo fish that peg behind him (the right hand leg side of the bridge) into the bay? as that bay is another holding peg

Did anyone fish the tubes pegs were the tube joins the 2 legs together ?

the 2 pipe pegs are both fliers. In the summer especialy from the left hand leg its not unusual to get dragged down the tube if a carp gets you as they shoot straight down the tube.  Another flier is the peg budgie was on and as long as theres only a max of 2 on the island they can be fliers .
