floods are changing there patterns

floods over the last 5 five years are changing there patterns here in the soar valley flash floods are becoming more and more regular in fact in the last five weeks we have seen the river soar flood over night
three times last saturday i went out just after 8pm and it had just started when we left two and a half hours later everywhere was flooded
last week i questioned this with some of the lads from the EA as they come in for cobs at dinner times there answers were quiet easy to understand
1 there soar valley had a new by-pass built 10 years ago and a lot of the brooks ,streams were diverted and the by-pass went straight through the middle of the soar valley this is only now showing the effects of flooding
2 here in the soar valley they have built up to 15,000 new house over the last two to three years could be more
3 most of the new housing have very little gardens so most are blocked paved or tarmacked as the drives are
4 who many new treatment plants have been built to cater for all the new housing ANSWER NONE
5 the river soar is half the river it was with no maintenance work ever being carried out like tree clearing dredging or clearing ditches out silt is now changing the flows on parts of the river
like they say nothing will change very quickly in there parts until its too late and we have a real disaster and with the changing climate it wont be too long before this happens
i just hope some of the moaners will read this and perhaps try to understand the changes to our river

Living in Stafford I can appreciate what Joff is talking about.
Years ago it was nothing to see coach loads of anglers come from Birmingham to sample the brilliant fishing on the River Sow, (OK nobody has probably heard of it nowadays). The river was basically a free fishery and offered brilliant float fishing for roach and virtually everything else that swims. I remeber as a kid going down every Xmas Day morning; 10 lbs of roach in three hours was nothing to write home about.
First came the M6 followed by a 'straightening' up of the river that was to alleviate floods; then came housing estates all built on the Stafford flood plains.
The end result is that we now a river that honestly resembles nothing more than a ditch - and a small one at that. It is totally unfishable for mile upon mile and this was after we were told the alterations (they cost millions) would make no difference to the river. In the old days there was 5-8 feet of water anywhere in the Sow, now we probably have one bend with that much in it; loads of it can be measured in inches. If anyone is ever in Stafford in the summer take a look at the river in the town to see what I mean; part of it resembles Wimbledon. We had a charity duck race on it and most of the ducks got stuck on the weed.
Believe me this was a brilliant fishery.
It will happen to the Soar, maybe not in our time but it will happen.

All you here about is climate change, but every canal is having its trees and bushes ripped out, they have just altered the coarse of the severn in gloucester to accomodate a new road. I think the climate and enviroment only matters if it relates to raising taxes

Perfect example of how to crappity smack up a river.

Not too long age the Yanks straightened a stretch of the Mississippi out to accomadate large boats (I mean big boats). This was done at a cost of billions. It worked till the rains came and flooded whole towns in the area. In their defence the Yanks admitted it was a huge mistake and spent more millions putting the Mississippi back to its original state.
There has not been a problem since. This was on a TV programme called Horizon if anyone saw it.

just a thought who is responsable for putting say a tricky peg in matches ie we are all of mixed ages is it the peggers or match organisers fault
if its the match organisers fault surely he should get the peggers to sign a obligation only to put safe pegs in would this share responsibility or past the responsibility to the person pegging

joff...had a 12oz perch and 8oz roach in the last half hour on lobby to get me out the ****.the rain was that heavey i couldnt even see me float just kept lifting me pole every now and again.i had a perch a1lb8oz come off...sooner be on the river went on the little withern yesterday had 2 chub 5 bits for 13lb 5oz 32 there yesterday river was 3 inches up but pacey...enjoyed that.better than sitting on the canal

27lb of chub 1st 2nd 25lb roach 3rd 21lb roach you needed a slack or some steady water.my peg was going like a train.but it still fished reasonable...

last year i think they only had about two with water on
