i think sharing the money out more is a goer if it could get a sponsor i would add trophys to the list it looks better for the sponsor if you spill the sections into 5 so you get your money back it might bring the sort of anglers we used to get on the big matches [just a idea]
and these sort of matches want to be 2 or 3 times ayear not every week

in our area open matches took place once a month and then it was back to club matches

Has anyone considered that the reason most anglers are not fishing big matches is because they dont want too?

The bigger the match the more likely it is to attract the "superstar anglers".

Why would they want to travel to fish big matches when they have everything on their local matches.

Why would the average angler want to fish against anglers knowing full well that they cant compete when they can go to a local venue against anglers of their own ability and take home a brown envelope every now and again.

I remember fishing annual matches on the Macc Canal in the late 50s and 60s. The major prize was one weeks fishing holiday in Ireland, a mega prize on a cut in those days. I think it was two shillings to fish (10p) and that was all you paid. There was always 200 to over 300 in this annual match. In 1959 (I used my nappy as a bait towel) I caught five perch for 10 oz. I can't remember what area I was as all the canal looked the same, just one small channel down the middle and the rest was weed. I doubt if the pegs were as much as eight yards apart but everyone was as keen a mustard to have a go for that coveted holiday. To sum up loads of friendships were formed in these matches as they still are today in some matches. The end result of that particular match was that 1lb 15oz won and there were over 200 blanks. Nobody moaned and these were really enjoyable days, to me the current match scene is a bit different.
Fast forward to today, how many of us would fish a match with that format today?
Feel completely free to take the p*ss out of me for putting this on here but match angling was for the masses then. It doesn't take much to work out that this is far from the case today.

i think your answer has taken it back to the original question MONEY yes superstars would come for the money BUT if the pot has been spread out across the field of the 100 anglers i would'nt think they would travel for the prestige of just winning a 100 pegger and a trophy BUT it might be of interest to the club angler who dos'nt quiet know if he is good-inf and dos'nt want to try the open match circuit full time BUT just could possibly win his money back at least

you could say superstars should be in a league of there own[that will never happen] they have the time and money to put a lot more practice in than i do[fair play] BUT if i was a superstar i would be doing the same and fishing sat/sun and midweek but i'm not and i see alot of anglers especially now in the same boat and i think this is becoming the best problem and thats why club fishing is rising in numbers
but the otherside is i can't fish in some of the club matches around here because even i am seen to be a threat to them

and when i've walked along a club match it's full of the old school open match anglers

i really think your onto something if you keep the pools money low £5 / £6 ........get a brewery involved and you cant lose. Winning a trophy and being a canal champion adds prestige for sure................ i know for a fact that a lot of anglers from the north west would turn out for this one never mind the midlands.
Match angling needs events like this, just look at the turnouts for the annual Macclesfield canal charity match at congleton 120 - 140 every year and anglers of all abilities aswell......enjoying the day.

Just an interesting point that is relevant to the thread.
I can not speak for last year as I don't know but the year before a certain gentleman from Leigh actually fished the OAP midweekers on his local cut during the early part of the winter.
These were £3 all-ln and the matchman concerned was none other than Kevin Ashurst. Food for thought or what..................................

I think what people should realise is there are hardly any anglers who make money out of angling, and nobody on our circuit i dont think makes money so the cheaper the match the less you spend over the year, plus the less chance of anglers spending loads on bait to win. On our super league they have insisted on only paying one in a section where as paul usually pays 2 which ok you may win less but at least more anglers get some of their days money back. I think the way Paul turner and Tony keeling run and pay their matches out are brilliant, not millions for winning just spread out so you get nearly as much for winning a section as for framing

I'm sure most would agree you win sections more times than you frame
