A digression from the original topic, plus Bills hair, but an interesting subject………….
Just a quick thought, following Lloydie’s comments, does ‘cheating’ fall into 2 (or more - I’m sure you’ll correct me) distinct traits?
A. The ‘ premeditated’ actions of an individual often carried out outside of match/fishing hours
Fiddling the draw
Pre baiting a fiddled draw
Staking out netted fish on a fiddled draw
Feeding before the off
Fishing before the off or after time
Using more than 1 line/hook at a time
Fish in the flask etc
Fraudulent weighing in
Etc etc
Or
B. Actions associated with baits, methods or tackle
Use of banned baits
Use of ‘alternative’ to permitted baits
Use of volumes in excess of permitted levels of bait
Hook size
Rigs
Methods – tapping, cupping water, floating pole, etc
Has the potential to infringe the rules associated with bait and rigs only greatly increased over the last decade because of the perceived ever increasing level of restrictions imposed by venues – and are they the more likely form of cheating to occur these days?
Two or three decades ago, the only times I really became aware of, or had suspicions of ‘cheating’ were instances of ‘actions’ of category A above by anglers…………….there were very few limitations associated with bait or methods on the venues I fished, typically rivers and canals

TK, Lloydie (yellow fizz).
I know what you are trying to say but cheating in any form, within angling contests, con only be construed as fraud.

In my opinion if the limit is 3 tins of corn or 1/2 kilo joker and you use more your cheating. On sensas final this year i put my bait behind me and at least 5 people told me how i could get more joker in my bait box whats all that about. i stopped going to one venue where anglers openly said they took more bait than allowed because the limit wasn't enough, even more frightening is that the owner who made the rules knows, his reaction is if the limits 2 tins of corn anglers will use 4, if the limits 4 they will use 6

bang on mate but i can't see how you can stop it i've been a bait checker before its not easy as some of the top names think they are above limits in france they even check your riva float trays to see if any baits in them

Good point Joff.
Everyone seems to be skirting the original issue; would they fish for a lot less money than they are used to today.
Does anybody ever stop and work out just how much is being taken out of big money matches.
Balance sheets are a must; even I get a recept when I spend 50p in
Asda.

Easy mate, if the organisers or fishery owners banned cheats and named them in angling press it would dramatically reduce cheating, there are always going to be scumbags who will cheat as they think they are above the rules and couldn't possibly get caught but the thought of the shame would stop most. On a bait check during sensas final 2 years ago on stainy the lad checking bait walked down checking everyones bait until he got to will raison, he just walked straight past and checked the angler next to him,Even though Will aint gonna cheat that aint the point if everyone is checked ther aint any arguments. Whole heartedly agree Bill...........was just trying to raise the thought that is the 'opportunity/likelyhood' of cheating occuring increased with all the seemingly increased stipulations on bait these days.......
Everyone seems to be skirting the original issue; would they fish for a lot less money than they are used to today.
Perhaps if entry fees were more modest, the angler that realistically considered themselves him/herself 'pools fodder' may be more inclined to enter and regard the match as tuition, rather than a money chasing exercise, and if on a good draw a bonus.
However I have heard other opinions expressed on the forums of the need to increase entry fees to £20/30/40 to make it worthwhile for the angler entering to both pay their transport and bait bill and contribute to the cost of their equipment. If so, that would certainly rule out any thought that Joe Soap (ME!!!) had of entering the odd open.............
It's finding the balance and also bearing in mind venue costs.............which probably comes 'less' into the equation on the cuts
100% profit on nowt is nowt........
viz
20 anglers at £15 = £300 pools/peg fees
or 100 anglers at £5 = £500 pools/peg fees
Also a bit more 'prestigious' to fair 'well' in a 100 pegger.......

Good stuff TK
On the issue of 100 anglers at £5 with a 100% pay out for a canal match i think could be winner, with anglers of all abilities being attracted
Now if a sponsor preferably a Brewery donated several cases (section prizes etc ) of their finest ale and a trophy to the lucky drawbag who wins ........ think we would have something to look forward to on an annual basis .
