Grueller 10 – The march of the little red men

Saturday 24/1/15 saw the Cashmores grueller "circus "travel to what is possibly Wheaton Astons premier ( canal ) fishing venue – The Shropshire Union Canal . After last weeks second place performance I was looking to secure at least a top 6 place ... handy as we only had 6 fishing

Mild weather conditions welcomed the battle hardy gruellerites and after much buying of secret bait ( rhymes with "lugworms and broker ") the draw was made , Tricast and Phil B were both awarded favoured end pegs and KOD drew the famous "Bream Peg " – much excitement ensued .
The water was pretty clear and would have benefited from a boat or two travelling through , when a couple of boats did cross our paths KOD was heard to complain ...... despite him being on the noted Bream Peg !

My match was pretty business as usual "grueller" , I tried every method from A to B and still could not buy my bites ..... with an hour to go my keepnet was wet for no good reason but ...lo ... the float dipped and a lovely roach did arrive ..... turned out to be the only one but meant DNW had been defeated one more time .

My main approach was made famous by Izaac Walton , a line attached to a stick and a hook on the end .... modern parlance would describe this as fishing a 3 metre whip .... bread punch was the favoured bait ( not favoured by the fish though? ) ...... during the thinking time the lack of action gave me I pondered how old Izaac would have fished my peg but then it struck me that he died in 1683 and the Shroppie was only finished in 1835 so he probably had never seen my peg ?

Lots of diddy roach were caught ( except on pegs 2 and 4 ) and several skimmers were seen on peg 6

Banter between the hardy Cashmore anglers built up as we approached the final whistle and the scores on the doors were as follows :

Peg 1 Tricast 1-11-0
Peg 2 was kept free as it was muddy!
Peg 3 Big Col 1-10-3
Peg 4 Trevor B ( sponsored by Ralgex ) 0-2-1
Peg 5 Josh 1-4-6
Peg 6 KOD ( on the famous Bream Peg ) 2-14-8
Peg 7 Phil B 1-13-0
Thanks to Big Col for organising and doing the weigh in .

Congratulations to KOD and Phil B for making the secret bait work , congratulations to Tricast for dramming Big Col and well done to all anglers for taking part .

I would also like to thank Phil B for his one man poetry recital on the car park at the end of the match – the man has many hidden talents .

I try to treat every match as a learning experience and feel that today I have learnt several new ways of how not to catch fish .

TREVORS TOP ANGLING TIPS – Dont waste money on a range of 3/4/5 metre whips , just buy a 5 metre whip and move your wicker basket backwards and forwards to gain the effect of fishing a 5/4 or 3 metre whip line ...... more top tips will follow

Almost four days since the cry of "All out " was heard at the end of Wheaton Aston big match.
Fellow followers of the float will be pleased to know, I have at last divested my (fishing) tackle of Shropshire mud. Almost four days before the next piscatorial adventure.
What joy
