Close Season or Not

Dave Harrell has a valid point is it time to move on and abolished the close season after watching tightlines.
For some reason, Keith Arthur seems to think it's only a few anglers in the Midlands who would like to see a change in the river close season law.
I talk to anglers from all over the country who agree with me that it's outdated and should be changed or got rid of.
As a matter of interest, can anglers from other parts of the country on here please let me have your views?

think we all need a break from fishing at some point i see more and more anglers resting over the January to the end Feb whether it is the conditions or just a bit subdued. When these anglers get their interest back and fancy getting their kit out the season almost closes straight away. yes we have canals and commercials but there is nothing better than fishing running lines in the spring weather down a river hoping for bites and fish.spawning fish will not feed they are just not interested and often they will be on spawning grounds you can't fish anyway .It also would save the tackle industry from yet another doom and gloom period having just sat through the harsh winter period .Go back a few years the old fossils in this country said NO to sunday trading its a family day !! yeh right could you stop this sunday trading now not a chance its perhaps the busiest day of the week now. these old dinosaurs must see the bigger picture sooner rather than later even trail a season

We are living in the 21st century; the closed season on rivers is that antiquated it is untrue.

I must admit I have totally changed my view though, the closed season was lifted on the canals (I was dead against it at the time) and what difference has it made to the fish and that is the issue here. The answer is totally crappity smack all; if fish don't want to feed when they are spawning they will not.

I was talking to a tackle shop owner on Friday from down Worcester way. Thursday and Friday he did good sales on maggots as anglers were sacking up on roach and dace on the Severn. Last year they had a couple of weeks and the year before less than that.

He suggested to let those that are responsible for the fishery decide and suggested they impose their own season when the fish are spawning which seems to me better than we have now although I would like to see it scrapped altogether.
Those fish were at Stourport and now the tackle dealer will sell no bait except stuff for the dark side. What a complete waste of good sport, -they have had a three months closedown with the floods anyway.

Another valid point is that some of the EU's woul;dn't even know what a closed season is, - you can't blame them but at least if there wasn't one the rivers would be better policed.

Closed Season, -- crappity smack it off.

It amazes me about polls on the issue. One Society who shall be nameless 'instigates' a poll and gets all their members to vote for the closed season and no crappity smack else even knows about the poll. How many times has this happened?

Our local river imposes its own close season from mid May to the end of October, as it is so chock a block with weed , that it is unfishable anyway-- but seriously--if they were to extend the season till the end of April, then have a close season for 3 months it would make more sense, as I would expect the rivers and drains in my area would continue to fish well for the next few weeks, until they raise the water level to summer levels,, but they usually fish very poor for the first 6 weeks or so of the new season, most arent worth fishing till late October anyway.

Theres half dozen tackle shops in the Docaster area....wonder what their view is on the closed season

Bearing in mind that all service anglers who fish... RIVERS within a few miles radius of their establishment. Be interesting to hear their views ont' closed season

None what so ever, lift the close season completely and just police locally venues depending on fish spawning in reeds etc to make sure common sense prevails

The first and formost issue here is the FISH.

There was loads and loads against fishing the canals in the Closed Season I am now fishing with most of them!
The Canals around here have never ever fished better.

I sympathise with the tackle dealers because of this issue, it is their living. Even losing the profit from a couple of gallons of maggots or casters makes a big difference and adds up over three months.

Perch disappear round here from as early as November; just odd ones are caught. They are the first fish up for spawning yet the size and quantity of them forever goes up and up. They are the same species that are in rivers as canals.

At the end of the day if we want a break none of us are forced to go fishing.

The Closed Season is total man balls with a huge B

I can just see it 50 years down the line- You know years back you were not allowed to fish during certain months, - Todays population will be a laughing stock, if fishing survives

Not just the rivers..........

Another aspect is the enforced close season on SSSI sites

I've just had 'to close' the Cannock Extension Canal for 3 months because of its SSSI status

tk the close for a plant is daft as no one as clue what the plant looks like and is probably dead any how after being trampled by dog's, walkers, bikes ect .

The spawning times are changing for fish now adays with the weather conditions changing. Spawning seems to be getting later now adays so the argument for the close season to allow the fish to spawn is going out of the window each year

Fish have been around for millions of years and now more about climate change than we do. They know where to go in floods long before the floods arrive fish often move to deeper water on bright days for a safe haven move back in the darkness.Fish swim miles if needed to and will be on the plant much longer than we will .In fact it's humans that post the biggest threat to fish with all this pollution and sewage.
The FOSSILS AND DINOSAURS need to listern to the angling trade and anglers fish are changing all the time we are the ones that are not .

The close season is nonsense, I live close to Pennington flash a 170 acre lake which I can fish all year,the river glaze runs out of the flash which I can't fish due to the close season? ????? Same water same fish?
