Cookley Eagles A C History
Cookley Eagles A C was founded in 2002 by a bunch of bored ex Sunday morning footballers, mostly novice anglers and one or two good anglers at the Red Lion pub in the village of Cookley, near Kidderminster.
As the Red Lion A C our first match was contested on the Abbey pool at Poole Hall by 21 members.
7 of these founder members are still with the club.
In 2006 the clientele at the Red Lion became a bit select and the offer of a sponsorship tempted us to move HQ to the Bulls Head pub where we remained until it closed for a while in 2008. We then moved our HQ a short distance to the Eagle & Spur pub, where our membership grew to 30, and realising the fact that pubs tend to close down more often these days, we came up with the more universal name we have today.
In our early days we fished a good mix of canals, rivers and pools, but now for various reasons and to keep our members happy we fish mainly commercials.
The village of Cookley is blessed with having the Staffs & Worc's Canal and the River Stour running through it and also being within a short drive to other venues.
At present we have around 22 members and quite a few of them are affiliated to other angling clubs, we fish every other weekend starting at the end of March and finishing around mid November.
We have also fish a Fed up of Christmas contest if enthusiasm and the weather allows us.
Our AGM & Presentation are usually held in February.
Our claims to fame:-
Des Taylor did our Presentation for 2004 season and also did a write up about our club in the Angling Times.
Our record weight holder of 157-14lb 6oz was caught by Mark Henderson a founder member of our club.
Columnist and Blogmeister for the Anglers Mail Steve Collett was a member of our club for three years.
We entered the Angling Times Super Cup for 11 years on the trot and never got past the first round.
England ladies angler Sam Perkins fished one of our contests as a guest 2012 season, she was second.
