THE STATE OUR SPORT IS IN
thanks to match fishing
Match Fishing debates the current state of the sport.
As we move into 2013, there is little doubt that the sport of angling is changing. Compared to 25 years ago, we are seeing new and different venues, methods and anglers rising, while other disciplines are seemingly declining in popularity.
Tom Pickering has been fishing for over 40 years, and has risen to the very pinnacle of the sport, being crowned World Champion, and now captaining the England Feeder Team. He commented: “Fishing has changed massively over the course of my lifetime, and whether the changes have been good or bad, depends largely upon the kind of fishing that you are interested in. For the general angler, I don’t think that there has ever been a better time to go fishing. There is more good fishing available now than there ever has been. For those who like natural water fishing, these habitats are teeming with fish, and because these waters are not under as much pressure from match anglers as they once were, they are able to fish almost anywhere that they want.
Then of course, they have the option of going to commercial fisheries –where they can almost guarantee a bulging net of big carp –in my early days we had no such luxury.
Sadly though, competition anglers suffer for the very same reason –there are that many good places to go fishing that match attendances have dropped, as the trend moves towards smaller matches on a lot of different venues. When I started fishing, it was rare to fish a match with less than 50 pegs, and some events had over 1,000 fishing! These days between 20 and 30 is more like the norm. There are still big matches to be fished – though now anglers have to fish festivals, or qualifiers for an event like Fish ‘O’ Mania in order to compete in a big competition.”
abait Marketing Director, Roy Marlow is another angler who has lived long enough to have seen the sport go through some fairly broad and sweeping changes. He added “I genuinely don’t believe coarse anglers have ever had it so good. Whatever they want to do, there are more fish about to allow them to do it! I can remember back in the early 1970s, a chap called Blacky Frost won a match on the Middle Level Drain with 60lb of bream. There was uproar, as nobody believed that it was possible to catch that many fish in a five hour match! Fast forward 40 years, and some anglers have caught that in an hour!
The rivers have never been as good, with more specimen fish present, and feeding than ever before. True, the head of small fish perhaps isn’t as big as it once was, but in areas there is still great roach sport to be enjoyed as well.
For those who just want to catch fish, commercial fisheries offer a one stop shop, where anglers can pretty much bag up to order. Game anglers are also enjoying water with more trout in than they have ever seen before, from commercial trout fisheries, to many of the rivers and chalk streams that are full of fish as well.
The only discipline that has suffered is sea angling really, as overfishing has lead to the population of our oceans being thinned out. That said, there are some exciting new trends, such as the recently popular Light Rock Fishing (LRF), which is really starting to take off. All in all, 2013 is a great time to be going fishing!”

THE STATE OUR SPORT IS IN
a little of this is looking through rose tinted glasses in my eye's
anglers will go where they want now-er days they are under so much pressure from work and family commitments that come the weekend they dont want to travel too far
this could and will go around in a big circle until a governing body with power is formed and take the sport forward .tom mentioned 20 to 30 peggers being the norm now-er days well why not put three together and make teams of three on three different venues whether its commercials or naturals
the competitive side of our sport is not for the average anglers when it comes to fisho, maver and the uk champs
commercials are a business now-er days 7,8,9or £10 a ticket take that out of your pools
sorry lots of points here dont add up

Nice to hear (hear not) about the canal fishing scene in Staffs and Cheshire that has at least a dozen 90-peggers plus many more not far short of that mark every year.

Spot on comments from Bill and Joff. I know Alan Round, he who couldn't peg in a straight line on the cuts has tried his hardest this year to run Trent matches and did get a few decent turnouts. However the weather gods are against him at present. Its lads like Alan, Bill (and his Stokey cohorts) , and Joffie who should be applauded for their efforts in keeping the match scene in the Midlands up there with some of the best fishing in the country. Long may it continue, and should they get even more support, improve for all our benefits

So true!! ..the sport has change over the decades along with the culture of a great deal of todays folk I fear… (not all may I add and not just in angling but life in general).
You hear comments like it’s the expense of travelling and the variety baits needed to fish canals and rivers however the majority of these folk spend a small fortune on the latest tackle - though,, so not sure expense is a big factor.
We too are blessed with some of the best natural venues in the country along with top notch match organisers who help keep the match scene alive!!!
SO WHAT!!!
Well!!! what has changed moreover the last few decades is way we communicate and the speed at which we can interact with each other.
Therefore - If you care about natural venues then IT’s up to us all to help promote naturals and help keep them the reality not a dream!!
What I have noticed is that whilst the initial entry pools have increased , so have the section pay-outs - in some cases they’re a paying 5 man sections as opposed to 10 based on turnout numbers - in an attempt to spread the monies and tempt anglers back ont’towpath.
Im off for a lay down now!!

Nice post Peds
As bill has hinted the canal scene in Cheshire / Staffs is doing very nicely ........ huge sell out leagues , great fishing all year round thanks to top lads who organise and run them . No showboating and no publicity seeking either , everyone just gets on with it and it is cheap fishing ....... the commercial scene seems to have priced itself out maybe these days plus the same anglers continually "win" day in day out.
sorry for going on a bit , i havent been able to post owt for a bit !

Pedro if you can get the numbers 5 peg sections work well ,as long as you pay the top 3 or 4 accordenly we all know there isn't a 100winning peg in a row but at least if you draw poor you can still cover a little of the cost of the day

section prizes are the way forward, especially in team fishing. As it has been said, it gives you the chance to get a return from even the hardest of areas

Maybe one day Peds, my on the bank angling has got very lazy right now though and to be honest, I am enjoying the change!!
If our canals all had the same access as the voorne I'd be back in a flash ::), well until I got battered off next peg by roach and I cant get a bite because they are sat in a tight ball anyway lol
Junky could be the exact double of that place, but who would get the planning and provide the funding??
