There was a guy down in Walthamstow that used to make boxes like that they were a huge upgrade from the blue shakey box

One of the guys had one of those when I fished as a junior in my first club. Believe it or not, it was way ahead of its time back then, must have been around 1979/80?

I think I have seen that box Chris is it that conti top with a whicker bottom ! Lovely looking old thing !
As Tony said Ken's shop was down the road at Gresley but I think when the Brennan and Hickman and Shakey boxes came out nobody wanted those that Ken made. A lot of those older conti boxes were ahead of their time and looking back I always wonder why designers did not improve them as to be fair the new boxes were just more durable and made of either carbon fibre or plastic, they also were cheaper but the moulds were pretty basic with little or no draws etc.
Then came the ASI !!!!!
As for Ken's shop it shut not long after that advert.

ASI - I always thought the AS part stood for Arnold Shwarzenegger - cos you needed to be built like Arnie just to get one off the ground - and that was without any tackle in them!

Angle Sport .... where the "sport" is weightlifting!

I still carry mine .... as does Tony Marshall with his .... just about the only similarity :'(

I'm sure some of the new contraptions must weigh as much or more.

NB (Norman Butler) Anglesport 1.

Still got mine, and with the amount of fishing i do i'll never need to get a replacement box. It's complete with footplate and purpose built G/B tray, which i bought at a very early NEC show.

Always carried mine. Did 300 pegs in a Stainy national once. Got dropped of a Crowle with 8 other coaches, 2 coaches went to the Keadby end and i had to walk to the last section at Keadby that didn't have a coach goint to it. Image Tractors and trailers were laid on for the anglers to put there kit on, but were not packed very well. When they came to the narrow towpath bit lots of kit went in the canal. Luckily i walked it.

Company went down the pan in 2003. Shame really as my G/B tray is knackerd.

I remember when Pete Wagstaffe and John Harper got AS boxes - when John sat on his he couldn't get the drawers open - mind you, he was just under 18 stone at the time!

I saw that too Richie. Unfortunatly the G/B for sale with the box didn't have the recess at the front of it for the footplate.

The footplate fixed to the 2 front hand wheels holding the legs in and folded upright against the box, AS1 made a different tray with 2 extra bit sticking out the front of the tray to accomodate the swivel part of the f/plate. Never seen one for sale anywhere. :(

Arch,

you just need to cut 2 slots in the normal tray about 4mm wide each to fit the footplate, as the hinges are very narrow.
I've done that to 3 trays with no ill effects ..... I have more problems with the corners wearing out and needing patching with fibreglass.
Oh - and dropping one in to an 8ft swim in winter on the Avon .... they don't float!!

Unfortunately my OCD wouldn't allow me to cut the tray. Image

.....But yes it's the corner thats gone on my tray too. Never tried patching it before, may have to give it a go.

However. The misses has had a tidy up in the garage and my fishing kit is now firmly stowed under the bench, so perhaps i wont be needing a new tray afterall. :D :D

just think of it as an "improvement" to the original design.

I've repaired mine with fibreglass tape before - but that does come off after a season.

But then I am happy being scruffy.

Do you know what ?? It's purley cosmetic anyway cos i only ever used the tray as a bait waiter on the bait box arm, never mixed GB in it. ::) ::)
