Chris V - its opposite Pilkingtons Glass factory (I think - sure someone will correct me if thats wrong) Water was extracted to cool rollers down - it basically almost reached boiling point - and was then returned to canal............keeping the section temp near 70c

I'm sure there must be a member on here with a tale to tell of their exploits/experiences on the section..........

i think they used to catch tropical fish along this strech chillids i think they were called, or have i got the wrong canal

Definitely Pilkingtons.

as a kid i would occaisionally fish under the cooling towers at our local power station!! im telling you there were record bleak in there!!

The site where the steam is rising on the photograph now has the World of Glass museum on it. It used to be Pilkingtons and there are still remnants of the old factory which are incorporated into the museum.

There are still matches held on that stretch, although the fish aren't quite as exotic as they once were.
