Fished on the Walsall Canal and Tame valley canals.
98 fished.

With the canal frozen the day before and the canal a strange colour most expected a hard day, however this was not the case for most with over half the field weighing 4lb+ of roach.

Showing the way individually was Ian Moulton with a catch of small roach that went 7-5-5 caught on Joker and bloodworm from peg 175 on the Tame valley.

On the team front it was Daiwa Trentmen that fired out a warning shot to other teams fishing the AT semi final with a superb performance on the day to total just 7 penalty points. The team of Darran Bickerton, Pete Scott and Jason Scrivener finished with 2 section 2nds and a third. More importantly to their semi final chances was that only one of the ten Trentman anglers fishing caught less than 4lb.

Individuals on day
1st Ian Moulton (Drennan NW) 7-5-5
2nd Jason Jeens (Browning Central) 6-8-12
3rd Darran Bickerton (Trentmen) 6-8-8
4th Darren Frost (Drennan NW) 6-7-7
5th Mark Webb (Saints) 6-5-15
6th Richard O'Conner (Drennan NW) 6-3-1

teams on day

1st Daiwa Trentmen 7 pts
2nd Drennan North West Gold 15
3rd Saints Coffin Dodgers 17 (16-3-12)
4th Daiwa Trentmen Green 17 (14-7-3)
5th Drennan NW Black 17 (12-2-5)

League to date

Pos Teams
1st Shaky Superteam 49
2nd Saints A 52
3rd HanKat Van Den Eynde 53
4th D & L MRM 55
5th Drennan NW 56
6th Shakey Mach3 60
7th Mosella Black Country 61
8th Drennan NW Gold 61
9th Drennan NW red 64
10th Taylors 65

in total there were

80 weights over 3lb
51 weights over 4lb
26 weights over 5lb

PS...If Joffy reads this the Trentmen would like to say a BIG BIG thankyou for choosing to go to Cudmore!

There was 1 very bad section where everyone struggled in half the section but bagged in the other half, Endpeg was in the wrong part of it....finished 12th with 0-13-15

Dodge3 was 2 in section with 6-0-1.

I was 8th with 4-15-0.

Ad Slade was 6th with 4-15-5 and took another quid off me.

Canal man was 11th with 1-7-0

TK..

I dont usually make excuses for Taypot but in this case i'll make an exception..

It looks like something had come in off the roads with all this rain.

The pegs either side of Holloway bank were dreadful, it looks like all the roach had been pushed down . you had ounces for the first 8 pegs then everyone had 4lb plus in the rest of the section.

sh!t happens...even to the best!

Hmm! Cant believe where we drew fished so crap to be honest. Every peg from mine down to my right and either side of bridge are normally flyers!

Chatting to Tony keeling and Si Nickless the only thing we can attribute it to is saltwater/grit run off into the canal as the further from the main road bridge the better the fishing got.

160 - end peg on Tame Valley only 11oz (normally 5lb-plus peg)
161 - Next peg by hump DNW (this pegs won matches with catches up to and over 10lb)
162 - Colin Mayor (Drennan NW) 1 perch (erm, Colin aint exactly crap is he!?)
163 - Jeff Warmington end peg to right of bridge 1lb 10oz (star performance!)
164 - Ian Hughes (Drennan NW) 3 perch and 2 roach - end peg to left of bridge (another potential framing peg!)
165 - 2 perch
166 - Jon Arthur - Reedbed flyer and potential match winner. 42 tiny fish for 13oz :-X
167 - One fish after 3 hours, walked up to next peg, came back and then had roach a chuck for 1lb 10oz.
168 and upwards - loads of roach with weights getting bigger all the way up to Ian Moultons 7lb winning bag!

I wasn't having a pop at Endpeg just in case it read that way Chockie Munster - it was a 'personal' reference to a comment following an exchange of mails between us - EP might remember I wanted a blow on his whistle too. :-[

3.00pm - Match finished. 42 tiny fish for 13oz.

3.01pm - Decided to have one more cast after match (told the guy on next peg just in case anyone moaned).

3.02pm - dumpy roach first drop. Three times bigger than anything I'd seen all match!

3.03pm - tried second joker swim where i hadn't had a bite all match and had an even bigger roach!

3.04pm - a slightly smaller roach next drop in.

3.05pm - p#ssed off, packed up, weighed in, f#cked off home!

4.00pm - home sulking on settee :'(

Oh and we all had fun trying to find the peg numbers in the morning as Lee's blue paint had washed off. Si Nickless paced it out so there were 20 dog turds between each peg. Then we realised that wasnt enough room so we made it 40 dog turds.

Jason Jeenes drew end peg in the match (170s on Tame Valley) only to be told it had been put in twice by mistake. He then redrew the opposite end peg in the match (31 on walsall :o) - and some people think im lucky!

I know you wasn't mate.

I really cant work out the canal...stupid bloody place!

Normally the pegs from 160 to 166 are a very good draw.

On the last match Jimmy hines went dry off peg 35 on the chemicals and all around him struggled...today it framed with Mark Webb catching 6-5-15 of small roach and the lowest weight on that stretch was 4-7-14.

Thats a question for endpeg Frank.

Thinking back the match which probably shows how the fish react to rain water coming into the water most is the first day of the 2 day xmas match i ran two years ago( Fred latham memorial now), i was drawn next to endpeg on the section back of the index, i think Jon was on peg 28 and i was on peg 29.

the section went something like this:

22 Dry net
23 Dry net
24 Dry net
25 Dry net Chris Jenkinson
26 Dry net  Jimmy Hines
27 Dry net
28 Jon Arthur 10-0-0
29 Lee Woodhouse 9-4-0
30 cant remember 7lb odd
31 cant rember 8lb odd
32 Simon Nickless 9-6-0

I think because the whole canal is in industrial areas the rain brings all kind of crap in.

Even in summer after heavy rain you seem to get "bad water" zones that seem devoid of fish.

Lee there's a drain by the metro bridge comes out of the factory est.
one off the companies does car spraying and they do put stuff down the drain excuse is it was a spillage had the EA down there stacks off time they did threaten to proscecute and it stopped might be back to ther old ways. The cut used be all colours. One day it was a pinky colour. What ever way the drag is going it does effect the fishing above or below the drain

I just thought it had a milky tinge. The pegs with all the fish in the 170s had lots of pike trouble so thats obviously another reason...

...plus fish have fins and will swim Image. They're never spread out evenly on any venue, particularly in winter.

Someone told me Fozzy has drawn the same peg on the Tame Valley 4 times now and had weights ranging from 3oz to 9lb. That about sums up fishing at this time of year really!

Thanks jon for the remarks , but im not sure it was a star peformance
It was after all an end peg ! I only caught for 20 mins and am sure a better angler would of held them for longer there was plenty of fish in the peg when i was catching as i was having bites as soon as it settled, they couldnt of moved far as he didnt catch to my right and put a line in 16 metres to my left at 5 metres out but still no bites , still scratching my head Image
