Drennan South West Super League Round 1 12/6/2011
56 Anglers- 7 teams of 8
The opening round was fished on the Kennet and Avon canal at great
Bedwyn, and the canal fished well despite the appalling conditions of wind and rain for the entire match, pegged on the Competition, beeches, Church and Station sections ,it was the last two stretches that dominated the overall results.
Winner on the day from the Station section G4 was Preston Innovations Thatchers Angler Gary O’shea who caught skimmers to around 2lb as well as roach on red maggot over ground bait for a healthy 15lb 13oz
Thatchers also had the second placed angler, Guy Manton who was pegged on E5 at the Church, Guy caught on similar tactics to the winner and also recorded a 15lb net with an ounce to spare.
Breaking up the Thatchers domination of the individual results was Garbolino Blackmore Vale’s Mike ‘Buzzer’ Berntsen who was pegged on G2 at the station, with 12lb 2oz, again the weight was made up of skimmers and roach on worm, red maggot and pinkie baits.

Just hijacking the topic guys, but out of interest, does the 'big' wag - 2ft or more - with a big bulk down to 'pick up the trip' still produce or is it all pole and feeder on the Huntspill these days?

It all seems to be feeder and pole down there now Tk, perhaps people have forgotten about the big wag? Whenever the waggler is fished now it seems to be lightly shotted for the roach.

Ok guys here goes, I drew peg 436 on the North Bank, which is half way between Woolavington bridge and Gold corner, but is accessed by the car park on the road down to gold corner, meaning I only had 2 pegs to walk! Always a bonus on a venue renowned for log walks. There were 2 sections of 7 this side of the river, with the end peg in my section (434) below the wires. I had Kev Rowles, guesting for Daiwa Gordon League on my left (435) and Martin Ryatt of Maver Bathampton on my right peg 437 with Thatcher angler Gary O’shea to Martins right on 438, the peg which Kev, won the section on the previous week with 8kg of skimmers. Mind you my peg had for as Gary had won the match from it 2 weeks earlier, ( these lads can draw! They might as well leave their tackle in the car park all week as they are never too far away.
Thinking that the feeder would be the main method here that’s what I set up first:
Rod 1- Map ultra II 12ft with a 1/2oz carbon tip- Team Daiwa Advantage 3500 reel loaded with 0.16mm Tubertini gorilla line with a 5lb drennan super specialist shock leader, a large nisa feeder with the holes taped up and a 0.12mm Garboline hooklength and a size 16 Kamasan B560 hook.
Rod 2 Preston Dutch master 12ft 8inch, TDA3500 reel preston titanic braid to a 5lb shockleader and the same terminal tackle
Pole- Garbolino G-max 1000 at 11m
Rig 1- 4x12 Image cane cut 0.10 main line – 0.08mm bottom and a 20 drennan polemaster competition hook
Rig 2 5x12 Image cane cut 0.10 main line – 0.08mm bottom and an 18 tubertini series 2 hook
14.5m – Rig 3 0.4grm Sensas series 18 float 0.14mm – 0.12mm – 20 super carbon maggot for eels
On the whistle I chucked the feeder to just over the middle (35 turns) 10 times and then picked up the longer range rod and chucked in another 6 times at 60 turns. My groundbait for the feeder was Sensas bream 3000 with ground pellets and brown crumb. And I fed casters chopped worm and squatts through it. I then cupped in 5 balls of Groundbait – Van den Eynde G5 on the 11m line for roach, and put a big cup of chopped worm with maggots and casters at 14.5m for eels
Kev on the next peg put in 12 babies heads on his pole line before spodding onto a similar line in the middle of the river as me, so was fishing before me, he started on the pole and was putting roach into the net each cast! I started on the middle feeder line and after leaving the feeder in for a count of 100 twitched it and then wound in. On my second cast I had a steady pull and hold of the tip, which resulted in a 1lb skimmer, and in the next 3 casts had ones of 11/2lb 12oz and 8oz, a nice start. All on 2 or 3 small redworms tipped with a beautiful home bread gozzer. More followed and soon Kev had chucked the pole up the bank and had followed me on the feeder. But as try as he might couldn’t buy a bite, Martin was faring the same on my right!
By now I had dropped to a lighter medium feeder but was still cramming it full of chopped worms and caster. In total I had 15 skimmers all on worms and gozzers, Kev managed 3 by the end and poor old Martin only had a couple of very small skimmers and a eel!
It did slow towards the end , and I had a go on the pole but it was very slow, which made me go back to the feeder, I did chuck right over, but all my fish came from down the middle. At the weigh in I recorded 19lb 10z for a section win, Kev Rowles coming second with 10lb odd.
The Huntspill has been a very frustrating venue for me in the super leagues over the last few years, I always seem to be fishing the pole when I should be on the feeder or waiting too long on the tip with little reward and miss out on the roach action. Finally I’ve been on a few. Hopefully I haven’t used up all my luck? As we are fishing there again on round 3 this Sunday.

Round 3 results nicked from the Anglers mail website(Thanks AM) Bit late with the result as I've been on holiday- Drove the missus and kids to Devon on Saturday and then drove up to this match on sunday morning minus my kit. It arrived via a team mates van, I fished then loaded it back in then drove back for my holiday, hows that for commitment? The kit spent the rest of the week in a mates Garage!
I had a really frustrating match, I drew next to where the winner was last week so fished the feeder for 2 hours for not much, then fished the pole for 7.9.0 only to be beaten by a 7.12.0 a 7.12.8 and a 8.5.0 oh for an extra hour on the pole, I got seen off by something a bit big on the pole, probably a big eel? and wound 2 skimmers off on the feeder! But I did have a nice holiday!
