Two brothers were attacked by a gang of 10 men wielding machetes and baseball bats as they walked along a canal towpath in Walsall in broad daylight.
The pair were left with serious injuries following the unprovoked attack.
Police have been out in the Birchills area over the weekend in a bid to reassure residents.
The brothers, aged 31 and 28, were walking along the canal towpath between Birchills Street and Old Birchills at around 1pm on Saturday when the attackers struck.
Both victims were taken to Walsall Manor Hospital with cuts and bruises to their arms and bodies.
The 31-year-old also suffered a serious injury to his left ear and had to have stitches, while his younger brother had a hand injury.
Dc Sam Kirk said: “This was a nasty unprovoked attack on two men as they walked in broad daylight. I need to appeal for anyone with information to come forward.
“The incident happened at approximately 1pm on Saturday lunchtime and when officers attended the scene a short time later, there were people dog walking and cycling along the towpath, so I’m hopeful someone may have seen something.”
The 10 attackers were all white males aged between 18 and 30. A white woman was also with the group.
