Ok you’ve seen the results for the first two rounds, and as promised here’s my Blog for the first round.
As reigning champions I was looking forward to this series of matches since the last one the previous spring, especially there was a bit more interest this year with the league expanding from 10 to 14 teams+ 2 other teams made up of anglers who just fished the rounds like an open match without their section points counting. Making 64 anglers fishing each round.
My Team was the same as the previous year despite Garbolino Blackmore Vale putting in 2 teams this year, after all why split up a winning team, and consisted of Myself, Rob (Nobby)Randall, Jon (Terry Nutkins) Atkins and Gary ( Dame Edna) Etheridge. Although Terry at the last minute decided he couldn’t fish the first round as he had a wedding to attend. Not his! So Nicky Johns of Maver Bathampton filled his slot ( well not literally!)
The match was fished over 4 sections around the Village of Little Bedwyn. A section at Beeches, B at the church reach, C at Iron Bridge and D on the roadside and it was C section peg 15 which found its way into my hand courtesy of our team drawing machine Nobby. And I’m not sure what happened there, as Rob normally gets the good sections? He was there the previous week and had 20lb for second in the practice match, although speaking with him all the action was over the first few pegs with 30lb winning it, so although I was pleased to draw the best section, I had this feeling that I may have drawn the worst end? As the draws are random, so that not every member of a team gets an end peg, peg C15 turned out to be pretty much in the middle of the section. Although when I was walking along the towpath to it I noticed one peg with a great big branch in the water and thankfully it had C15 next to it. Hopefully there would be a few perch hanging around underneath it?
With a plan of plundering the roach and skimmers on punch and squatt along with the occasional look for a bonus perch, these are the rigs I set up:
· 0.4grm Dufils Nord on 0.09mm Garbo- line, with a bulk of 11’s and 3 no 12 droppers 0.07mm bottom to an 22 Image IM1 hook Fished just off bottom at 5 sections 0.7 Latex- Punch
· 4x12 Lattimer fibre Squatt (with 0.7mm Fibre tips) on 0.09mm Garbo- line, bulk of no.11’s 3 no 12 droppers 0.06mm bottom to a 24 Image IM1 hook Fished just off bottom at 9.5M 0.6 Latex- squatt and occasionally pinkie
· 4x10 Lattimer fibre Squatt on 0.09mm Garbo- line, strung no 12’s 0.06mm bottom to a 24 Image IM1 hook - at 9.5M 0.6 Latex – Squatt
· 5x12 Lattimer Briljant on 0.10mm Garbo- line, Bulk of 11’s, 3 no.12 droppers 0.08mm bottom to a 20 tubertini series 2 hook – 0.8 Latex for decking a bait if any skimmers turned up
· 0.3grm Garbolino DC15 on 0.12mm-0.10 to a B560 18 hook, shotted with a bulk of no 10 stots and a no24 swivel between the main line and hooklength fished at 9.5M to the branch- chopped worm- Black no.8 Elastic through 3 sections)
At the start I cupped a Kiwi sized ball of liquidized bread on the 5 section line , 3 big balls of groundbait (Gros Gardon Black, roach and brown crumb, which had been ground in a coffe grinder and riddled through a flour sieve before mixing) at 10M , along with a big cup of hemp at 11M and finally 5 hopped Lobs and a few casters near the branch
.
I started on the 4mm punch, at 5 sections, but couldn’t get a bite, eventually the float slowly slid under and the resulting strike went solid! I’d only fed over a snag! How come I never felt it on plumbing? Slowly it came back to me and before long I was netting a great big branch! Its amazing how much you can pull 0.07mm line without it breaking! Thinking that it may have clouded up the bottom and disturbed the liquidized bread I had fed, I decided to feed again, but this time with a ball ½ the size as the original. Next cast I had a 3oz skimmer/silver bream followed by roach and the odd small skimmers. After 45 minutes I had put 20 fish in the net, despite the slow start, and this was above par for the anglers each side of me, who had both started on squatt. Now was time to pick up the perch rig and see if there were any lurking out over the Lobs I had fed at the start? Threading a nice lively redworm on the hook I lowered it next to the branch only for it to sit there for about 10 seconds before thudding under, a firm strike resulting in a fare bit of elastic coming out. Before long a near 2lb perch was in the net. Its amazing how you can somehow feel the anglers for about 3 pegs each side of you thinking ‘ jammy William the Conquerer’ all at the same time? I joking mentioned to Rob Kepner on the peg to my right that I’ll ‘have another drop in to see if I can hook its brother’ Well the redworm was on the bottom for less than 10 seconds and I had another close relative of perch number one on the hook, on netting it I showed Rob, mentioning that it was probably its mother?
I had another go with no luck, before feeding another 4 Lobs and getting back to the punch line. All the time I had been feeding the squatt lines with about 20 squatts a cast, but I wanted to leave these for as long as possible whilst nurturing the bread and worm lines. And this was what I did with the fish on the punch and about 3-4 small perch each time I fished the worm
After a couple of hours it was time to empty it on the squatt, so out went the 4x12 rig but after a couple of quick roach it was a lot slower than I had anticipated. A swap to the shallower strung out 4x10 rig solved the problem and it was a case of fishing at either 9.5 or 11M to keep the roach coming With about 40mins to go and after several fruitless go’s the worm rig produced a pech about 12oz followed by one of about a pound the very next cast, and I was in a dilemma? Weather to stick it out for a couple more perch (risky)or keep with the roach, which were there to be caught? and I sort of did both, resulting in no more perch and a few less roach than I should have caught.
At the weigh in I thought I may have about 12lb and weighed in 13lb 1oz which was the best weight from the lock till the last 5 pegs, were Dave Johnson put 14lb 9oz of rather large perch on the scales, Andy Silvey had 10lb 2oz off the next peg and had a perch of 3lb 2oz in his net, but admitted to loosing another 5!! On the penultimate peg Paul (double his estimate and add 2lb) Waddington of Daiwa Gordon League was admitting to 10 to 12lb so I knew I was in trouble, and his net of big perch and skimmers came to 20lb 12oz. Gary Ladlier dropped 14lb on the scales from the end peg to demote my weight to 4th in the section. Maybe I shouldn’t have wasted too much time trying to catch more perch? Mind you one more would have put me second!
The Results are towards the top of the page so I wont bother re writing them, suffice to say I was looking forward to the next round as the whistle went for this one.
Blog of the second round will follow soon

Thanks for the comments guys, it really is a top venue and I'm glad its not 150miles further north Rog. It's an hour away from me as it stands. I'll get the next match written up as soon as I can but the missus has discovered Facebook and eBay so I haven't been able to get near the computer for a few days. Rich

Right as promised, but a little late due to the missus discovering facebook and hogging the computer for the last few nights, here is the blog for round 2
The match was fished over the same 4 sections as round 1, so of course everyone was hoping for C section and another perch fest , and low and behold the drawing machine that is Rob Randall stuffed peg C11 into my hand, the delight of being in C section quickly ended when I had a quick scan through the results from the previous match to find that 4lb odd came from it! Boo, Also I found out that our other team had peg 12 which meant that my travelling partner, ex England Youth International Will Bohnie was at the next peg, which isn’t ideal, as our plan of spraying loads of squats at the fish is somewhat lessoned when someone is doing it on the next peg, especially when it’s someone as good as Will.
Walking up the section the canal seemed a little lower this week and there were a lot less boats moored up, so consequently the pegs weren’t exactly on the same ones as the previous week. I was hoping I may get closer to my earlier peg, however it was not to be and I was one peg past the branch, on the peg Robbie Kepner had 7lb off of, leaving Will smack bang on the plum peg. Was I gutted!
My plan of the previous week of plundering the roach and skimmers on punch and squatt along with the occasional look for a bonus perch was on the cards again, so the rigs I set up were very similar with the addition of a 4m whip just in case they went mad on the inside and a dibber caster rig for the slightly better roach instead of the decking skimmer rig:
· 0.4grm Dufils Nord on 0.09mm Garbo- line, with a bulk of 11’s and 3 no 12 droppers 0.07mm bottom to an 22 Image IM1 hook Fished just off bottom at 4 sections 0.7 Latex- Punch
. 0.4 Garbolino DS9 on 0.09mm Garbo Line, a strung bulk of 11’s and 3 no 12 droppers 0.06mm bottom to a 24 IM1 0.7m Latex for squatt on 4 sections just incase the bread was slow
. 4x16 Browning pencil float on 0.08mm Garbo Line – 0.07mm bottom to a 22 drennan super carbon canal hook shotted with an olivette and 2 no.11 droppers fished on a 4 sections to hand of my Daiwa connoisseur x whip
· 5x10 Lattimer caster on 0.10mm Garbo- line, strung no. 11’s, 0.08mm bottom to a 20 tubertini series 2 hook – 0.8 Latex for caster across
At the start I cupped a Kiwi sized ball of liquidized bread on the 4 section line ( I was a section shorter than the previous week, as I got all 4 legs of my Fox Platform in the water rather than the front 2 I had the previous week, and because of that I was a similar distance out) , 3 big balls of groundbait (Gros Gardon Black, roach and brown crumb, which had been ground in a coffe grinder and riddled through a flour sieve before mixing) at 10M , along with a big cup of hemp with a few casters at 11M and finally 5 hopped Lobs and a few casters at 11M but angled off towards Will on my right
I started on the 4mm punch, at 4 sections, but again it was painfully slow and in the first 15 minutes only put 2 fish a 4oz skimmer and a 2oz roach into the net, when Will who started on the squatt had about 8, it didn’t feel right so I decided to feed a little more and have a quick look for an early perch. This was a little earlier than my normal 45 minute wait, but was brought forward not just because I was struggling on the roach but also because Martin Phipps on the end peg had already netted about ½ a dozen good fish!! Within a minute of threading on a nice lively redworm on an 18 B560 I was getting some elastic pulled out, but at around 14oz the perch was a tiddler by last weeks standards! Will was quick to change and his first perch went 1 1/2lb’s so I felt it was going to be one of those days!,
I had another go but only a couple of 2-4 oz perch followed, Will had a 12oz skimmer! So I chopped up another 4 Lobs and got back to the punch line. But unlike the previous week nothing happened so In went a ball of groundbait and it was an early look on the squatt, at 9.5M, out went the 4x12 rig, I felt that I was on it earlier, and any fish would still be mainly on the bottom over the groundbait rather than looking for the squats that were being catapulted in regularly since the whistle. Soon I was into a rhythm of ship out, feed, strike, fish, and as well as the normal roach I was regularly netting the odd 2-4oz skimmer, a swap to the shallower strung out 4x10 rig didn’t seem to be needed as it was the previous match. I also found that I was putting in more groundbait than the last match which didn’t seem to be putting the fish off as a lot of them had stained mouths from the black groundbait! Will and me both count our fish but it soon become apparent that he was creeping ahead on numbers despite fishing a section further than me, I couldn’t continue as I was as I would never catch up unless I had a couple better ones, and I kept trying to up the catch rate and/or size of fish I had a few goes on the caster with only a few slightly better roach the result. During the last hour was chucking in a small ball of groundbait after every other fish, and the roach and skimmers still kept coming , Will and I both kept trying for the perch, Will had another of about 14oz, but mine were a lot smaller 2-4oz samples, I still felt we were both behind Martin on the end peg thanks to his early fish spree and also Adam Carter in between me and the end peg, who was now targeting the better ones and seemed to be drawing them off Martin, again I was in a dilemma? But decided to stick with the roach and skimmers and ended the match with 142 fish, Will had 167 and the pound and a half perch so I knew he had beat me as had the next 2 with their net of biggies, At the weigh in I admitted to at least 7lb thinking I might make 8, but when the scales came up from the other end 18lb 2oz was the top weight from the first peg and there were a couple of 9’s and a few 7’s so I was getting a little worried. Will was first to weigh, I thought he may have 11lb and I was almost right, as he put 11lb 2oz on the scales, its funny I can estimate neighbours nets before I see them, But I’m shite with my own, as my 30+ fish and a 1 1/2 perch less went 10lb 8oz and received moans from the 9lb’ers, Sorry guys. Adams net which included 4 big perch went 13lb 11oz and Martin weighed 13lb 6oz from the final peg. So I had been battered, but in a strange way was pleased that I had caught as much from the peg. Will Was also surprised that I was so close to him as he had so many more fish, but we analysed it on the way home and felt the groundbait had helped sort out the better fish in the slightly deeper 9.5M line? As Will had almost all roach form 11M where he only fed groundbait at the start, but had fed a pint of squatts through the catapult over the 5 hours
Again the Results are towards the top of the page so I wont bother re writing them, the next round is on the 22 May as the organisers bugger off to Ireland for a month! So its Gardening, decorating and Rig tying for me until then,
Will on the other hand has been honing his fish catching skills at our local Todber Manor Park Lake matches were he had 816 roach on the last match for 86lb!! to take the Silver fish pool
(give me 10lb of canal roach any day)

Round 3 of the K and A canal spring teams of 4 league.
22/05/11. 68 fished- 17 teams of 4
The Third round moved along the canal to the; Farmers, Brimslade and Wolfhall sections and weights were down from the previous 2 rounds, maybe due to the gale force wind that the anglers had to contend with for the 5 hours
Winner on the day was ex fishermania and John Smiths winner Kevin Rowles, Devizes Match Group B who was drawn on the Farmers section A3. Kevin weighed 13lb 8oz, which consisted of 4 Bream, a small carp and smaller skimmers caught on Red maggots or small sections of worm over groundbait
Second placed Mark Brush of Daiwa Gordon League A from Peg D10 down at the Wolfhall section. Mark had a flying start catching a big skimmer on his first cast, and added 3 more in the first half an hour, after that he caught the odd skimmer throughout the day and also a 2lb+ perch. Mark like the winner caught most of his fish on Red maggots and worms.
Two pegs down from Mark, Richard Chave of Garbolino Blackmore vale Gold had a very different match, only catching 4 roach in the first hour whilst watching the skimmers being netted 2 pegs away, However 2 Skimmers on the chopped worm after 2 hours got him started and he finally netted 4 along with 60 roach on the squatt to record 10lb 3oz and Third Place
Fourth Place went to Steve Long of Daiwa Gordon League A who was pegged on C10 at the tunnel end of Wolfhall. Steve also had skimmers in his 9lb 6 ½ oz net

Sorry a little later than promised , here is the blog for round 3
For the third round the sections were shunted about 2-3 miles to the west onto the Wolfhall, Brimslade and Farmers sections. When I rung Match Organiser Nigel Franks in the week he was practicing the Farmers section so I thought that that was the end to be? So when Terry Nutkins, who was deputising for Nobby at the draw bag handed me peg D12 at Wolfhall, I was a little disappointed, Will however, who I had driven up there with was a little happier on A14 at Farmers.
After dropping off Will I had a 10 minute drive to get to my section, which was split by a bridge, Team mate Kev Abigal was on D14 and advised me to walk to the left as he was up that way, and to be fair I hadn’t actually looked at the map at the draw, So off I went passing Kev, Matt Herbert on D13, but couldn’t find D12, it was then it dawned on me that I was to the right of the bridge and on the end Peg! The sections are pegged with A1 through to A17. Then B5 being the first peg in the next section. C section starts on 9, And D, 13. This prevents the team who draw 1 and 17, in this case all having end pegs. So I smugly Pushed my Barrow back past the anglers I’d previously walked past, under the bridge and down to the end peg of the whole match!, it was then I realised I had left my phone in the car so back I walked to pick it up, I was only back at my peg 5 minutes when I had a call from Will, who was sounding worried as he couldn’t find his glasses, saying that they must be in my car!! So there I was on an end peg flyer? With the prospect of having to drive back to A section ( a 20min round trip) So that Will, who can’t see the end of his cock without them is reunited with his glasses!! So as quick as I could I began to set up my tackle, just the 2 lads cycled past, “excuse me” I say “ where are you two off too?” Devizes was the reply “ could you do me a favour?” The deal was struck and they agreed to drop mr magoo’s glasses off to him on A14 so I ran back to the car with them to look for the specs, but they weren’t there! The womens wetter had only dropped them between me dropping him off and walking to his peg! The two wheeled errand boys were relieved, and I went back to setting up my tackle. I’m sure the rest of the section were now getting a bit yellow streamed off with me walking back and forward past them by now!
So after all that messing about, when the whistle went I wasn’t exactly ready, but I did set up these rigs:
· 7x12 Lattimer fibre Squatt (with 0.7mm Fibre tips) on 0.09mm Garbo- line, bulk of no.11’s 3 no 12 droppers 0.07mm bottom to a 24 Image IM1 hook Fished just off bottom at 4 sections 0.7 Latex- squatt and occasionally pinkie
· 4x12 Lattimer fibre Squatt (with 0.7mm Fibre tips) on 0.09mm Garbo- line, bulk of no.11’s 3 no 12 droppers 0.07mm bottom to a 24 Image IM1 hook Fished just off bottom at 9.5M 0.6 Latex- squatt and occasionally pinkie
· 4x10 Lattimer fibre Squatt on 0.09mm Garbo- line, strung no 12’s 0.06mm bottom to a 24 Image IM1 hook - at 9.5M 0.6 Latex – Squatt
· 5x12 Lattimer Briljant on 0.10mm Garbo- line, strung no. 11’s, 0.08mm bottom to a 20 tubertini series 2 hook – 0.9 Latex for Decking big maggot, double pinkie of small bits of worm for skimmers at 9.5M
· 5x10 Lattimer caster on 0.10mm Garbo- line, strung no. 11’s, 0.08mm bottom to a 20 tubertini series 2 hook – 0.8 Latex for caster across and to the right at 11M
· 0.3grm Garbolino DC15 on 0.12mm-0.10 to a B560 18 hook, shotted with a bulk of no 10 stots and a no24 swivel between the main line and hooklength fished at 11Mto the left - chopped worm- Black no.8 Elastic through 3 sections)
I had upped the hooklengths to 0.07mm this week as there was lots of colour in the canal and being that I was on the end peg I may encounter some bigger fish. Also there was a bit of weed in the peg from about 9.5M to the far bank making fishing further over than 9.5M difficult.
At the start I cupped a 250ml polecup ball of groundbait on the 4 section line along with 3 similar sized balls of groundbait (VDE Black secret, Special and brown crumb, which had been ground in a coffee grinder and riddled through a joker riddle before mixing) at 9.5M , along with a big cup of hemp and casters at 11m to the right and finally 5 chopped Lobs and a few casters at 11m to the left both of these lines were at the edge of the weed so still in the deep water.
I started on a fluro pinkie , at 4 sections, and quickly had a roach of about 1.5oz followed by another, however two peg to my left Mark Brush of Daiwa Gordon League had had the same two bites but both of his were 1lb 8oz skimmers!! Then the guy between us has a slightly smaller one, so a tactical change was in order, I swapped to the Skimmer rig but as try as I might I couldn’t get a bite. The chopped worm rig was tried then the caster but after the first hour I had had another 2 roach for a grand total of about 6oz, but now Mark who had continued to catch skimmers, had at least 8lb!! The guy between us hadn’t added any more so it seemed that Mark was the only one catching, This was confirmed when a quick phone call to Kev further up the section revealed that he was blanking!!
In the second hour I put about 20 fish in the net, mostly on single squatt on the 4x12 rig at 9.5M and a few from the inside, but occasional drops in on the chopped worm produced nothing, but 15mins before the end of the second hour 4 more minced lobs went into the canal at 11m to the right.
On the hour I threaded on a nice lively redworm onto the 18 B560 and within 20 seconds of it being lowered into the swim I was getting some elastic pulled out, and at last a 1 ¼ lb skimmer was joining the roach in the net. Next chuck one twice the size followed, and just as I was thinking I’d better get another keepnet out, that was it, a small 1oz perch followed and despite feeding and fishing this line several times to the end it those 3 fish were all that came from it!
I had been feeding squatts and the occasional ball of groundbait on both the 4 section line and at 9.5m but the fish weren’t exactly queuing up, so I changed to 0.06mm hooklengths and a 26 hook and it was like turning on a switch, from getting 2 bites on a line and then having to change to the other to get a bite,I was getting bites every time I went in, and with a hour to go a skimmer of 1 ½ lb was added on the light rig at 9.5m and with ½ an hour to go I had an 8oz’er on the inside.
I ended the match on 60 roach/ small perch and the 4 skimmers for an estimated 9lb. Mark said he had at least double figures so I knew I hadn’t won the section I hoped I had enough for second? To secure points for the team
The scales arrived and my 9lb went 10lb 3oz so I’m getting better at estimating. Marks went 12lb 9oz, so we were 1st and second in the section, there was an 8lb, a couple of 6’s a 4lb, 2x 3lb’s, 4x 2lb’s 4x 1lb’s and a blank! So this end of the canal hadn’t fished as consistent as the other end we had fished for the first 2 rounds.
Bait wise I had fed about ¾ of a pint of squatts just under a kilo of groundbait and about 25 lobs and ¼ pint of casters
Will had sneaked a section win by default with 7lb so it was a happy car driving back to Dorset that night.
Next round this Sunday, As well as a practice match for our super league on the 5th of June, so if anyone’s interested in having a go? let me know and I’ll get your name down.
