After seeing John Dean on all our yesterday,s it got me thinking ! who were the best or still are the best, river anglers in peoples opinions.
Mine are as Follows on the venues I know:
River Dove - Roy Walker
Upper Trent - Tony Scott
Middle Trent - John Dean
Avon - Dave Harrell
Witham - Fred Foster
Welland - Ivan Marks
Soar - Tony Marshall
Nene - Pete Jayes
Derwent - Pete Warren

Come on get the grey matter going !!!!!!!!!

CWH, - I think you mean Fred Foster on the Witham.

Vic Foster lives in one of those houses that backs on to the Erewash Canal at Dockholme, Long Eaton.

Good topic, Billy Lane was a good 'un on the rivers. Years ago in the Tom Draper on the Trent at Shardlow I was in the same section as Billy, somewhere near the ?Long Horse bridge? in the Pride water. It was the windiest day you could ever be out in. They were big sections in those days and I fished a stick float with nearly as many shot above the float as below it to combat the wind. I think Bill fished a Missile type waggler. At the end of the match we were only two standing in the section. Amazingly we tied with 13 lb odd of roach each, he was brilliant about it and never stopped asking how I fished it.

Those were the days 8-) 8-) 8-) 8-) 8-)

'Swing Tip' Fred was from Rotherham or Sheffield. Not sure if Stuart was his son or nephew.
Another guy from those days was Keith Boswell.
He moved over to Ireland, where he still lives. Erne Bait man with Kevin Ashurst.
He, Keith Boswell, probably saved my life one day a few years back; you'll have to ask me about that when you see me Image

sometime back I asked Swinno and Don ( Slaymaker) seperately, who they thought was the best stick float angler they had seen.
Both said without hesitation Pete Warren.

Anybody remember the Hart brothers on the Welland and the Nene.
One was Ivan, I think the other was John.
They did lots of winning on both venues with bream; terrific anglers.
Ivan is still about, he owns East Delph Fisheries; he is not enjoying the best of health but is a real character.
Peter Lee was a top notch Nene guy too. Image Image

Looking back at the Soar I remember a very amiable chap called Barry Chaplin that got it well sorted. He ran the matches and won a lot of them with big weights of gudgeon. They were Image big turnout in those days Image
