Yep I remember the mag.........think its in a couple of big boxes that I lent to Zorro a year or two back

In fact there was a ruck load of Match Fishing mags in the boxes from the early 80's too - when it used to be bi-monthly - cracking read all in black and white.........(apart from the cover)

Just going back to your pickies above - who can remember who Steve Canty fished 'with' - the team name I mean. Image

Their name was possibly the 'inspiration' for the team name we had locally (MESC Raiders)

Yeah Goole Avengers.

If I remenber right Goole Avengers finished runners-up to our lot (Izaak Walton Stafford) in the 1986 Division One National on the Oxford Canal. It was fished on September 13th, after a real heavy frost! with bloodworm and joker allowed. Cov, with Billy Makin and co, were favourites. The Stafford team almost shattered the points record (average) and still have the second best average behind Notts Fed, a team of Trent 'invincibles' in it's day, (Frank Barlow, John Moult, John Toulson, Pete Palmer and loads of other top names in their day).
When Notts Fed gained their incredible points record I was Pegged directly opposite Frank Barlow; He was trundling a stick float down the rocks in the Nelson field. As you are probably aware that is slap bang opposite Shelford shallows, - I was casting a waggler to the middle to get any sign of flow and depth!
Following that National win a former member of Goole Avengers signed for Stafford. He was a terrific angler named Alan Warren and he fished for Stafford IW for a number of years.

Ahh, those were the days; Can't catch crappity smack all now but never miss a Saturday or a Sunday come what may.

Correction, I think Hinckley were runners-up in Div One in '86 but Goole Avengers were well up in the list.

Paul Glenfield originally fished for ISIS Oxford for many years until he joined Trevs Browning in about 1992. He stayed with us until about 1998 and left after the winter league final on the trent with Stevie Dorn to join Oxford Drennan. He fished with them for a couple of years and then joined Banbury Gunsmiths with whom he still fishes with. He has won some big river matches (John Smiths and Thames Champs) and he is still one of the best river anglers around and I learnt so much from him during his heyday. He`s also pretty good on canals and won numerous opens on the now defunct Oxford canal scene. He`s biggest claim to fame is his inability to drink more than two pints of gnats yellow stream before throwing up, plus his uncanny knack of recreating the Ricky Gervais dance rountine from `the office` at every club/disco in the UK and ireland, in fact Dave Harrell once voted him the best disco dancer ever in one issue of match fishing many years ago.
Paul`s trademark was his famous flat top haircut which is still evident, but gets copious lashings of `just for men` to maintain its `natural` black ink colour. He must have got a family discount because i drew next to an older gent on an open at Medley in the 90`s who was sporting exactly the same cut and it turned out it was his old man. In following years I met Paul`s dad many times and you couldn`t have wished to have known a nicer fella, he was very proud of his sons match fishing career and always went to watch him at Evesham on the Smiths. Sadly Paul`s dad recently passed away and the world is a poorer place without him.
