OK ME........here goes..............

Saturday morning and the forecast from the night before daint look too good  :'(

Not only is there a swirling mass of rain laden cloud, there’s a massive low pressure sitting over the country.  :(

It’s 7.00am and a peer through the curtains reveals a damp but rain free start to the day.

A couple of brews, gear all out and Heinzer calls spot on the dot to pick me up. Car loaded and off we set. 100 yards down the road and the heavens start emptying. Image

Arriving at the canal theres quite a few cars about, but it’s a bit of a struggle trying to find the enthusiasm to get out of the car and peg out. A sit about for 5 mins, sod it its got to be done.

Si, one of the local crack’s from Pelsall joins TK and Heinzer pegging out. 13 pegs, are put in from pegs 45 onwards. Whilst pegging out there is little wind about, but whilst walking back, the direction changes and a fresh easterly kicks in. Anybody who knows owt about the cut will realise that that there is normally a slight tow left to right as it runs to Chasewater. The wind, in the opposite direction will have a real  impact on presentation thinks TK to himself. Image

TK seeks shelter to do the draw under the bridge. A quick count reveals 10 hardy anglers have turned up, conditions probably seeing a couple of others off. Pegs 1-3 are removed from the draw. Its 9.00am and everyone appears reluctant to draw, still seeking shelter from the elements. One by one the finally secure their pitches for the next 6 hours or so until one peg is left in Heinzer’s hat……….peg 7 that will be Sprucey's for the day, if he can be cajoled into getting out of that car.

A wander down the tow path to peg 4 for TK. At least the shortest walk. Miraculously the rain has now stopped so a chance to set up without getting too wet. Image

The wind has freshened more though. Image

4 rigs are set up……….two punch rigs – 0.06 straight thru to fine wire hooks, one for at 5mtrs down the inside shelf, the other in deeper water at 9 mtrs just before the far shelf. 2 ‘animal rigs are also set up – one 3.3lb for the track, the other 2.10lb for up the far shelf.

SPRUCEY JUST BEFORE OFF, NOT LOOKING FORWARD TO IT
Image

The off. Both punch lines are fed. A liquidised corn & caster mush is fed down the track to the right hand side. Pinkies and casters are fertled to the inside left by a patch of lilies and far over to another lily pad.

A few small roach are slowly wheedled from the inside punch line and one decent fish bumped…….before it dies 50 minutes in.. Topped up again, TK has a look across on the far punch line. First put in, float settles and then sails away. A lift and several feet of soft no6 latex sail down the cut…………and the float comes back with 8 oz of weed.  :'( :'( :'(Not bost – that’s a surprise.

Rig ‘cleaned off’ and next couple of put ins throw up another couple of small roach until a skimmer is probably foul hooked whilst ‘working the rig’ and promptly comes off, snotting up all the line. :(

A quick couple of looks far over and over the corn/caster line doesn’t produce owt.  Image

Back short on the punch………a few more small roach start to come until the ‘Last of the summer wine gang’ stop and chat loudly behind TK. They are all experts and masters of this cut, know every peg inside out, but just lack one thing………… any watercraft. Image

A couple of hours in and Sprucy is on a walk about.  ;)The fish magnet has obviously had his polarities pointing the wrong way,  :D cuss all he’s snared is a couple of billies, before deciding to fill it in with pellet. A stop behind TK and within two minutes TK’s lacky briefly shoots out on the inside punch line…….the fine wire hook is straightened out. ‘Sod it’…….. and much to Sprucey's amusement, or was that astonishment, its ‘straightened’ out,  Imageanother pellet of punch is put on and the rig lowered to the left hand side at the back of some stick ups……………within 5 secs lackie screams out again with the same result.  Image

Well not a lot happened after that. Sprucey went back to find out whether all those tincas and bremes had moved over his pellet.  Image

With an hour to go, sitting now on double mag down the track, TK picks up a small tinca about a 1lb which hits the net in less than 10 secs.  Image Another look, but this time over the long punch line which is fizzing, a 6oz billie is picked up!!! – not what was expected.   Image

Rotating lines and bait, bites are at a premium. Then the float dips a final time with half hour to go. No 8 shoots out 2 foot. ‘A better tinca’  TK thinks to himself as he ships back. Down to no 5 section the line suddenly goes slack and it’s come off……the no 14 B611 hook has failed to do its job and the beast mysteriously comes off the hook, despite a tight line. >:(

PHIL B JUST ABOUT TO SNARE HIS TINCA

Image

Worse is to come, Phil B lifts into a tinca with 15 mins left. I say lifts, cuss he daint know it was on, the float didn’t move. Safely netted after a 5 min tussle, it looks like its wiped TK out on its own.

Heinzer blows for the end……….the 5 hours have fled, despite periods of inactivity.

Well here’s the result……….no dry nets, but a few DNW’s

Peg
4. TK 2 – 7 – 0
5 Phil B 2 – 6 – 0
6 Ball it in DNW
7 Sprucey DNW
8 Gerry L DNW
9 Heinzer 1 – 4 – 0
10 Si Evans 7 – 15 – 0
11 Cotti 0 – 14- 0
12 Zorro DNW
13 Yamo 4 – 14- 8

Tales after the match……………….

Cotti cant believe he couldnt find those lb roach  Image
Heinzer’s been seen off by an Essox Lucius  >:(
Yamo has had a couple of tench, but got seen off 2nd put in  Image
Si the Pelsall crack has won his second match in a row with us, no wander he asked TK to keep him informed of any other knock ups…..   :D
And Sprucey daint stop moaning…………..and he’s only faced one grueller   :P Image[reason]Pickies added[/reason]

tiger its well worth a few goes down there as theres plenty of good sized tench in the stretch ;) On pleasure sessions they seem to come out more often than in matches. In an earlier report its mentioned about Yamo having a play down there and having 17 tench out, plus ive see pleasure bags of 50 + lb come out with the biggest bag a few years ago weighing just over 80lb all of tench Image. If you go down toward the black metal bridge big (double figure carp have been know to come out. Im sure if you speak to TK he will point you in the right direction to which pegs are best Image Image
