River Hull & Derwent Angling Championships 2014The East Yorkshire Rivers Trust and East Riding of Yorkshire Council's EYevents Team have joined up once again to deliver two days of match fishing on the Yorkshire Derwent and River Hull.
With a £1000 first prize up for grabs each match, the event will again prove popular with anglers across Yorkshire and further afield. This event also assist the Environment Agency to survey the status of coarse fish stocks in both rivers, as routine monitoring is ineffective, in these deep fast flowing rivers.
Unfortunately this year the matches will be hosted on separate weekends. This is due to the fact that the size and timing of the tides, have conspired against the organisers.
The River Hull Championship is to be contested a few weeks early than the norm on Saturday 27th September. It is hoped that that having the match a few weeks early will mean that the rivers' roach shoals will be spread out along much of the match length, offering anglers a chance of a day's sport.
Last year despite the blustery wet conditions, huge catches took the top five places, with Trevor Sharp being at the ‘sharp end' of the pack and a £1000 better off, with a 39lb 2oz mixed haul from end peg 11 directly upstream of Grovehill Bridge. Second and third place came from the other side of the bridge where Shaun Leskiewicz and Craig Singleton hauled in 38lb 8oz and 38lb 4oz respectively. The best net outside of the Beverley Waters was Dave Pulford with 24lb 10oz of pole caught roach from opposite the Crown and Anchor Pub at Tickton.
The championships will be again run as a two day ‘festival,' sponsored by EYevents. The Derwent round is taking place two weeks later on Sunday 12th October 2014.
The winner of the leg on the Yorkshire Derwent last year was Julian Griffin a local East Yorkshire rod who caught 200 roach for a brilliant 26lb 11oz from Bubwith, for an excellent days fishing that earned him a grand! Second was a M. Rapier of Leeds with a bream catch at Barmby of 15lb 15oz. Third was Martin Highe again at Bubwith with 7lb 6oz.
With the match been pegged in ten peg sections over a fairly long distance as the river flows, the fishing is very varied from roach, bream and perch in lower sections to chub, dace, grayling and barbel in the waters upstream of Stamford Bridge.
Anglers are welcome just to fish one match, however there is a 1st place prize of a £1000 sponsored by EYevents for the best placed anglers after both rounds of the competition, as well as cash prizes down to 4th place.
Tickets are on sale now in tackle shops in Hull, York and Leeds, for anglers further afield you can contact Paul Caygill on 07976 779983. Tickets are £5 and must be purchased in advance of the competition.
Optional pools is £10 per match paid on the day, with all pools monies been paid out to the top three in each 10 peg section, therefore even if you draw in a less productive area you are fishing for more than the usual payout on a local commercial.

River Hull Derwent Angling Championships 2014
The 1st leg of the EYevents Eat Yorkshire Angling Championships held on Saturday (27th September) was yet again another great success 149 anglers fished the event with many traveling from across the northern half of the country too fish.
The match was held two weeks earlier than normal due to issues regarding the size and timings of the tides. With this in mind locals were predicting the match to be a very fair contest with the fish spread along the whole length, especially considering the Indian summer we are experiencing.
The match was fished under bright blue skies, this and clear water in the river around the Beverley area made for challenging fishing, and weights at the well known hotspots of Hull Bridge and Beverley Shipyard would reflect this. Previously unfavorable areas like Kingswood and Ings Lane (Dunswell) on the muddier parts of the tidal river on the outskirts of Hull, offered some excellent fishing on tip, pole feeder and large lolliepop floats for large roach and quality skimmers and hybrids. Some of the weights weighed in here would challenge those from the fliers several miles upstream at Beverley.
Nigel Hirst was the best angler on the day winning the £1000 first prize with a 8kg 930gr taken on the end peg at Tickton, running a stick float under the footbridge for a nice roach catch.
Second was Dave Brooks Snr. who had 7kg 810gr from Beverley Shipyard. Bob Brown had 6kg 340gr from an unfavoured peg 29 near the tip at the bottom of Deans. 4th was Loius Todd a local angler pegged one up from Dave Brooks in Shipyard with a tidy net of fish for 6kg 300gr.
Illustrating the quality fishing and fish down on the lower tidal river Craig Hirst had 6kg 220gr for a very well earned Fifth place, and the first time a catch from this part of the river has framed.
The second leg of the event is on the Yorkshire Derwent on the 12th October for more information see previous posts. Anglers whom have not fished the Hull match are more than welcome to fish, as there is plenty of prize monies on offer with another £1000 first prize, and all pools money paid out in the section

River Hull Derwent Angling Championships 2014
One hundred and fourteen anglers descended on a fog shrouded Yorkshire Derwent last Sunday (12th October).
With the river very lightly fished and over 25 miles of river pegged at eight venues, there are very few certainties, historically bream have always shown above Barmby Barrage. This year's Yorkshire Derwent Champion was Eric Peacock of Doncaster with a 6kg 970gr catch of bream from peg 16 at Barmby Barrage. The catch earning him cool £1000.
Last year's winning peg above Bubwith Bridge was occupied by John Urruty the Derbyshire rod fished stick float and maggots to take 91 roach for 6kg 780gr.
Similar tactics downstream of the Bubwith Bridge saw Beverley rod Craig Hirst catch small roach steadily all day to take 3rd spot with 5kg 360gr.
A similar roach catch of 5kg 260gr at peg 16 down at Barmby saw last year's Yorkshire Derwent Champion Julian Griffin take 4th place.
Fifth was Methley rod Gary Matthews with 5kg 250gr also at Barmby. 6th was Pete Allott who followed up a good performance on the lower tidal Hull two weeks ago with a 4kg 120gr net upstream of Bubwith Bridge, the majority of the catch been made up of two large chub.
The Yorkshire Derwent championship was the last leg of the East Yorkshire Angling Championships, with an extra £1000 first prize sponsored EYevents.
Mirfield rod Nigel Hirst consolidated his first place on the River Hull with a 7th place finish on the Derwent, with a 3kg 880gr roach catch taken from the upstream end peg at Loftsome Bridge to give him 8 points. Also tied on 8 points was another Hirst: Craig Hirst third place on the Derwent followed on from a 5th place on the River Hull, which saw him pegged at Kingswood, taking a mixed catch of silver fish pulling the scales around to 6kg 220gr from peg 2. With the tie, the result was decided on total weight, Nigel had the upper hand with 12kg 810gr compared to Craig's 11kg 580gr.
Third place went to the Julian Griffin who finished 12th on the Hull and 4th on the Derwent for 16 points. Pete Allott was fourth with an 11th place on the Hull and 6th on the Derwent for 17 points, taking the last cash prize.
With the exception of Nigel Hirst who drew a favoured peg at Tickton on the first leg on the River Hull, the others in the top four in the EYevents two day competition all drew on the lower River Hull at Kingswood and Ings Lane, rather than the few favoured pegs in Beverley Shipyard.
Others:-
Lewis Todd 18 points
Bob Brown 21 points
John Urruty 23 points
Jan Stephenson 39 points
Dave Brooks Snr. 48 points
Dave Brettle 55 points

Third place went to the Julian Griffin who finished 12th on the Hull and 4th on the Derwent for 16 points. Pete Allott was fourth with an 11th place on the Hull and 6th on the Derwent for 17 points, taking the last cash prize.
With the exception of Nigel Hirst who drew a favoured peg at Tickton on the first leg on the River Hull, the others in the top four in the EYevents two day competition all drew on the lower River Hull at Kingswood and Ings Lane, rather than the few favoured pegs in Beverley Shipyard.
