Woodlands Lakes, Thirsk can always be guaranteed to come up with close finishes and this year was no exception with just 12oz being the margin between first and second place.
It fell to Nathan Watson last year’s Fish ‘O’ Mania Champion of Champion’s winner to take the honours from peg 20 on Partridge lake at the 15th Fish ‘O’ Mania qualifier on Saturday 25th June 2011. Nathan took full advantage of his end peg to give him a winning weight of 118lb 9oz of carp up to 10lb, which was taken by continually moving between the method, long pole shallow, down the margins and pellet waggler to give him his match winning weight.
It was all go on the morning for Nathan as his return holiday flight was delayed by four hours which meant he only made it from the airport to the draw with just minutes to spare.
Nathan said after the match “It was great to qualify yet again and I hope I can take the title to add to my previous win as well as my Champion of Champion’s win of last year.”
The conditions on the day were warm and light wind and expectations were high for the 130 anglers that made their way to Woodlands Lakes for the penultimate round of this year’s Fish ‘O’ Mania qualifying match. With the likes of two time’s Fish ‘O’ Mania Champion Matt Hall and a whole host of former winners such as Steve Ringer, Steve Cooke, Nathan Watson, Marc Jones, and Geoff Ringer, and many more well known names were all vying for one of the last two places in this year’s grand final.
Narrowly pushed into second place was Paul McIntyre from Leeds from peg 16 on Skylark who fished corn over a bed of ground bait. He took carp up to 10lb to finish with 117lb 13oz. Third place fell to Steve Ringer pegged directly opposite Nathan on Partridge 17, he fished banded pellet shallow on long pole to finish with 17 carp for 110lb 6oz. Steve said after the match the only thing he was short of was “that one extra big fish”. To keep it in the family Steve’s dad Geoff who fished peg 19 on Skylark had a very slow match, until everything turned round in the last hour with him putting 80lb of carp in his net in the last hour to give him a final weight of 90lb 12oz, to give him the fourth spot. In fifth place was Steve Forster from peg 5 on Partridge with a weight of 89lb 6oz.

Please with how it went ,i pegged it for a fair and hard match and not for glory and the only let down was the Loco Lake again ,i pumped out 18inches of water this week thinking it would help with the presentation and expose the island but it had a adverse efect

I was on Loco and it was a waste of fuel from Stafford to Donny
. Started the first hour with two small Barbel
and three perch the size of my thumb
. That was it all match. The three anglers next to me had nothing all match, no not even a bite.
Came away feeling like we had been ripped off, 300 anglers fishing every peg and I get the featureless lake.
Wont stop me going for it next year though, but if I get Loco i'm heading straight home and the rods wont be seeing daylight!
Least we manged to top up the tans
whilst we fished Loco down in Garbolino

The line up for the grand final will be; Jon Arthur (Viaduct), Tony Curd (Makins), Chris Kendall (Lakeview), Tim Nash (Woodlands View), Alan Bruce (Packington Somers), Andrew Neal (Stafford Moor), David George (Monk Lakes), Shane Atkin (The Oaks), Andy Favill (Peatling Pools), Simon Christian (Tunnel Barn), Richard A’herne (Moorlands Farm), Robert Pelling (Partridge Lakes), Kieron Rich (Preston Innovations Boldings), Andy May (Heronbrook), Nathan Watson (Woodlands Lakes), and Mark Wainwright (Lindholme).
Mark Wainwright of Normanton secures the final place into the Fish ‘O’ Mania grand final for 2011
Filling the 16th place for the final position in the Fish ‘O’ Mania final on 16th July will be Mark Wainwright of Normanton in Yorkshire. Mark put 53 kilos 770 grammes on the scales from peg 73 on Bonsai at Lindholme Lakes, Doncaster on Wednesday 29th June 2011. Mark caught carp to 7lb on chopped worm and caster.
In second place was former winner, and member of Team England’s Feeder squad Steve Ringer. Steve fished Laurels peg 33 and caught around 28 kilos of carp to 3kilos topped up by F1’s to total 45 kilos 150 grammes. He fished a short pole all day catching on luncheon meat over heavy feed. Third place went to former Fish ‘O’ Mania Champion Neil Machin. He caught a mixture of carp to 5lbs, F1’s and barbel from Oasis 25 to weigh 43 kilos 220 grammes. Jason Le Bosquet took fourth place with 42 kilos 520 grammes from peg 21 on Laurels just edging Tom Pickering into fifth place. Tom alternated the bomb and feeder on Bonsai 47 to finish with 45 carp for 40 kilos 210 grammes
Lindholme, which traditionally hosts the 16th qualifier each year, had another distinction this year as it saw the first 300 pegger since canals and rivers were the regular qualifier venues. Surprisingly there were a fair number of no shows, but with plenty of reserves in attendance most places were filled.
The fishing was in places quite disappointing, mainly due to the changeable weather which has taken it’s toll on the spawning season. That said weights were still impressive with over 30 kilos needed for 10th place and 20 kilos plus needed to win all but three of the 10 peg sections.
All the sixteen winners from the qualifiers held this year will be competing to win one of the most prestigious titles in angling, ‘Fish ‘O’ Mania Champion’, and an increased prize fund of £30,000 on Saturday 16th July 2011 at Cudmore Fisheries, Whitmore, North Staffordshire.
