Shane Atkin Joins Fish ‘O’ Mania 2011 Final Line Up
It fell to the well established Maple Lake to come up with the goods at the eighth Fish ‘O’ Mania qualifier at the Oaks Fishery on Saturday 14th May 2011.
Local angler and Oaks regular Shane Atkin, a Carer from Billingham in Cleveland took full advantage from peg 67 to take 28k 500gm, to become another fresh face who will take part in this year’s grand final in July. Shane fished 4mm expander hook pellet over micro feed pellet at 13metres and 14.5 metres tight over for carp up to 6lb to achieve his qualifying place.
Somewhat shell shocked after the match, Shane said “I was over the moon at qualifying at my first attempt as I applied for three Fish ‘O’ Mania tickets this year and got one. Unfortunately I have not been fishing for 6-7 weeks due to work commitments, but I felt that my peg always had the potential of throwing up a good weight of fish as long as I could maintain good presentation in the windy conditions, and noticed that there was not much wind in the corner so fished the pole across. I am really excited about the final but also really nervous being live on camera.” It was a double celebration for Shane as it was his son’s eighth birthday.
Two previous nights of cold heavy rain coupled with strong gusty winds met the 130 anglers for the qualifier on Saturday, though it managed to stay fine up to the last 40 minutes of the match the strong gusty winds persisted throughout the day making for a testing time for all competitors that took part.
Many locals thought that when Andy May drew peg 1 on Sycamore he might be the man to win on the day as this peg was always fancied. With the lake being stocked with small carp averaging from ½ to 1lb plus fish, this would suit Andy’s style of fishing as speed would be the order of the day if he was to put together a weight that could secure him a place in the final; however on the final whistle his weight of 25k 900gm knocked him into second place. Third place went to Colin Scott from Bury, fishing peg 66 on Cedar with a mixed net of F1s and mirror carp to 6lb for a weight of 25k 600gm. Previous Fish ‘O’ Mania winner Marc Jones finished in fourth place from peg 1 on Cedar, fishing pellet across to the far bank for 25k 050gm.
The ninth Fish ‘O’ Mania qualifier for 2011 will take place at Peatling Pools, Peatling Parva, Leicester on Wednesday 18th May 2011.

Fisho Mania 2011. Who's through.
Andy Favill (Sun Inn, Tuxford) a Unit Operator from Newark fished his first Fish ‘O’ Mania qualifier for 10 years at Peatling Pools Match Lakes, Peatling Parva, Leicestershire on Wednesday 18th May 2011 .
Andy put 47 carp to 4lbs on the scales for a total weight of 121lbs 3ozs from peg 45 on B Lake. He started shallow on meat, but after only one fish he switched his attack to the margins catching firstly on corn, then on worm.
Andy said “I have never fished at Peatling Pools before and this is only my second Fish ‘O’ Mania qualifier I have taken part in, but thought I could do well when I drew my peg. I am looking forward to taking part in the final, and will now be looking forward to practising in the build up to the day."
Unfortunately the day didn’t get off as predicted with the match start time having to be delayed for an hour due to a serious road traffic collision between junctions 29 and 30 and a man jumping off a bridge near Derbyshire resulting in the M1 being closed in both directions for several hours afterwards with a large number of anglers caught up in the massive tailback. A head on collision directly outside the main gates of Peatling Pools also added to a further delay for the anglers getting to the draw.
With Peatling Pools hosting it’s first ever Fish ‘O’ Mania qualifier, and prior practice sessions limited, it was a trip into unknown territory for the majority of anglers. On top of this, it was a surprisingly hard day for many with cold rain and winds clearly affecting catches which fell disappointingly short of expectations on a couple of lakes. Recent open matches had shown that the catch potential on all the lakes was very similar with several producing big weights only last weekend, but that said 37lbs or more was needed to win 9 of the 13 ten peg sections. In the end it was the bigger lakes which produced the goods.
Runner up on the day was local angler Steven Porter from Kibworth in Leicester who fished Peg 2 on B lake to weigh in with 102lbs of carp to 12lbs alternating between a 5 metre line and the margins with corn. Tom Pringle took third spot with 81lbs 1ozs to fish shallow. Fourth place was Tom Pickering who took carp to 8lbs in a 75lbs 11ozs net on the method feeder. Doncaster angler Andrew Bailey was fifth with 75lbs 4ozs.
On Saturday 21st May the Fish ‘O’ Mania qualifiers go to Tunnel Barn Farm in Shrewley, Warwick for another chance to see who will join this year’s line up in the grand final on 16th July 2011 with Jon Arthur, Tony Curd, Chris Kendall, Tim Nash, Alan Bruce, Andrew Neal, David George, Shane Atkin and Andy Favill.

Simon Christian wins Fish 'O' Mania qualifier at Tunnel Barn Farm
Before the draw nobody could make their minds up as to which lake at Tunnel Barn Farm Fisheries on Saturday 21st May 2011 would produce the winner.
Whilst superstitious people may consider 13 to be unlucky for some this proved otherwise for Simon Christian (Stimech Anchor AC) a Memorial Mason from Bilston who drew peg 13 on Club pool where he fished luncheon meat on the pole to the island and down the edge to net a succession of carp to 7lbs, F1s and barbel for a winning net of 145lbs 4ozs.
This is only Simon’s third Fish ‘O’ Mania qualifier match since 2007, and his win means there is another new face in the line up in the grand final.
Simon Christian said “I had an island to fish to on the far side down the end of Club pool and fished to the end of the island to the far bank, and an edge swim to the right of me to 9 metres, with an empty peg to the left. I could have gone further to the right, but did not need to as I had a lot of fish within my swim and caught 11 fish in the last hour which were bigger than earlier in the match. I am over the moon to win the qualifier as I do a lot of match fishing, but only started fishing again in the last four years after a 6-7 year break.
"I decided to branch out this year and apply for some Fish ‘O’ Mania qualifiers, and applied for six, and ended up with two tickets, with this being my first one. I am looking forward to the final, and have got a lot of information from Kieron Rich which will hopefully put me in good stead for the final. Kieron has offered to be my bank runner if he doesn’t make it through from his four qualifiers he has left”.
Blustery sunny conditions with low water faced the anglers in this latest Fish ‘O’ Mania qualifying match at Tunnel Barn Farm, however the fish still fed and there were seven weights over the magic ton and the lowest weight to win a 10 peg section was 63lbs.
Runner up from Canal peg 4 was Chris Telling (Daiwa Gordon League) from Gloucester.
Chris a Driving Instructor pole fished chopped worm and caster down the edge at 13metres to finish up with 118lbs 9ozs of F1s, barbel and smaller carp. In third place was Stuart Ballard (Maver Midland/Dynamite Baits) landed 110lbs 9ozs from peg 37 on New pool.
Fourth place fell to Carl Jewitt (Blue Bell AC) from Hull, who took 108lbs 8ozs of F1s and barbel from Peg 9 on Canal. Simon Fry (Starlets AS) filled fifth spot with 105lbs 11ozs from Club peg 12.
Moorlands Farm Fisheries at Hartlebury, Worcestershire is the venue for the next Fish 'O' Mania qualifier on Saturday 28th May 2011, with just six more qualifiers to go in 2011.

Fish O Mania Qualifier, Moorlands Farm
Caerphilly angler Richard Aherne nets the winning weight at Moorlands Farm Fish ‘O’ Mania qualifier
Caerphilly angler Richard Aherne (AWA Shima) an Area Sales Manager joins the line up for the grand final for Fish ‘O’ Mania in July after qualifying on Saturday 28th May 2011 at Moorlands Farm Fishery, Hartlebury, Worcestershire.
Richard had a two line approach and fished one at 5 metres and the other at 13 metres to fish paste over sweet corn from peg 51 on Meadow pool to win the match with 124lbs 10ozs of carp to 12lbs. For the first hour Andy concentrated on the short line, but this only resulted in foul hooking a couple of carp which all came off, and seemed apparent at that stage that pellets were the wrong thing to feed. The second hour of the match Andy went onto the 13 metre line to start with corn on the hook, but once again he was only getting line bites. For the next three hours he kept catching carp, the biggest at around 12lb, and every time the bites slowed down more corn was potted into the swim which brought an instant result. After the fourth hour Andy proved that the tactics were working to net 18-20 carp. In the last hour of the match the fish had backed out which lead to Andy fishing at 16 metres on the paste to get a bite, but after having two fish on this line Andy had to give up on this method due to the wind. For the last thirty minutes he came back onto the short line which resulted in his last carp to give him his winning weight.
Richard Aherne said “I fished at Tunnel Barn Farm the week before and finished in sixth place, and managed to have a chat with Lee Richards and Bill Hill who both said that pellet and paste had been working well . This is my third year I have entered the Fish ‘O’ Mania qualifiers and I was lucky enough to get four qualifier tickets this year.”
“After I weighed in on Saturday it just didn’t sink in, and I was over the moon with my weight as I had some good anglers around me who had struggled. My intention on the day was to just enjoy myself and I certainly did that, and to be honest it still hasn’t sunk in that I won. I am really looking forward to the grand final, and have been told that it is a great experience and a great day to be a part of – let’s just hope I can catch some fish on the day.”
Variable weather conditions faced the anglers on Saturday at Moorlands Farm Fishery with it remaining windy all day and mostly overcast, with a brief but heavy rain shower in the early afternoon. There were some good weights on the day, but unfortunately many struggled for bites all day.
Runner-up Andy Benwell tried hard to make it two on the trot as he won this match last year. Andy (Predator AC) fished paste over pellet at 6 metres and 13 metres from Peg 2 on Bank pool to take a net of carp to 10lbs, totalling 103lbs 9ozs. Third place fell to another AWA Shima angler Glyn Reynolds who drew Meadow 8 where he fished paste down the edge for 89lbs1oz net of carp to 13lbs. In fourth place was Steven Seaborne from Ross-On-Wye also on Meadow from peg 54 where he weighed in 87lbs 12ozs of carp and skimmers. Mark Malin (Team Mosella) finished in fifth place with 80lbs 13ozs from peg 17 on Bank pool.

Andy May Through To Fish O Mania Final: Report
The number one forum on the web for match, club and coarse anglers
Post a reply First unread post • 1 post • Page 1 of Cudmore Regular Andy May secures his place in the Fish ‘O’ Mania final for 2011
Past finalist Andy May, a professional angler from Middlewich won the 14th Fish ‘O’ Mania qualifier held at Heronbrook Fisheries, Staffordshire on Sunday 19th June 2011. Andy caught carp to 8lbs steadily throughout the match.
Andy drew Canal Peg 10, which amongst others in the area has some significant past form. He set his stall out to fish tight to the far bank weed growth, where he found 4 feet of water, but decided to fish shallow as tight as he could, with a second line down the track as back up. Fishing a banded pellet to the weeds and loose feeding pellet little and often was the method that eventually paid off for him to finish the match with a winning weight of 61kg 300gr despite losing a significant number of fish in the far bank weeds.
Having been runner up on a number of occasions recently, Andy openly admitted that it was a relief to go one better and qualify, and as an Angling Coach at Cudmore he must be the top favourite for the final.
Andy said “I felt confident that I was in with a chance when I drew my peg and had a good day’s fishing. I am really looking forward to the final at Cudmore as it is my regular venue, and this will be my second time now as I first qualified at Cudmore in 2008, so can’t wait”.
Second place went to Adam Rooney (Kamasan Starlets) an Account Manager from Brooklands, Manchester. Adam was on Bridge Peg 36 behind the café, and caught F1’s, carp and barbel to 10lb to record a weight of 46kg 220gr. Using pellet on the hook and loose feeding pellet across for the first 2 to 3 hours saw him catching F1’s steadily until the peg dried up. He then switched to his inside line tight to the bank, using and feeding maggot he caught a larger stamp of carp and the odd barbel to make up his weight.
Third place went to Leigh Hodgkinson (Fox Match Trentmen) a Data Engineer from Shipley, Derbyshire, from Meadow Peg 28. Leigh fished meat across and down the shelf and caught F1’s and carp to 9lb finishing with a weight of 42kg 580gr. In fourth place was Carl Sutton (C&R Kitchens and Bathrooms) from Countesthorpe, Leicestershire with a weight of 41kg 260gr, whilst fifth place went to Carl Moon from Ashbourne, Derbyshire with a weight of 41kg 220gr.
