Chulb!
Chulb!
Was recently competing in the second round of the Soar valley winter league when something that seems to happen to me quite a bit happened again!!
I'd drawn a decent peg on the brinks section and with a bit of water on i expected a few chulb to show up so i pretty much attacked my peg with chopped worm through a bait dropper over to the adjacent tree. To cut a long story short i hooked 7 but only managed to land 4 . All the ones i landed were hooked deep so i assumed they were feeding confidently.... I was using orange bazoocarp through two sections set soft, 5gr flat float slightly overshotted to 0.22 mainline and a 0.20 hook length with a size 12 gamma power on the end. All the fish came off half way back across the river and i can't for the life of me understand why!!?? Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated

Serious this time.
Lee did You ease the float down at all ? If so sometimes the bait trials the bulk and I just don't think the hook sets. Did you use a heavy back shot and fish it in the L shape Mate ? or world champ rules stylieee ?

lee Ive fished the peg times and had good days and bad off it ,your talking about peg4 which is normally solid with big peach but with the extra water must of pushed the chub into the peg from above
one thing i do know is the peg is the best barbel peg on the section so it could of been a barbel you lost and we are talking double figured barbel and the other sometimes when the chub are in a frenzy they snatch at the bait and you often hook them in the strangest parts of there mouths bait doppers put a lot of bait in quick where as if the river allowed you to loose feed you might not of had that trouble .mark was saying he used 4 pints of casters and landed 10 chub he also lost 3 but at least one of them coul;d of been a barbel all the others were lip hooked

didn't know you had a stutter Pete

in my experience you always seem to lose a few on the pole i had that peg last year and lost 3 chub on pole and a barble smashed up my 5th section and swam upstream with 4and half sections of pole never to be seen again.later i fished stick running down the narrow bit of run towards tree feeding heavey hooked 3 chubb and landed all as i think you have more control on rod and line do not give an inch is my best advice dont worry i think you did knothing wrong

Richie i fished it world champ rules style mate, couldn't really bring the backshot into play as i had to fish a pretty short line to my float to keep it out of the trees! I did also ease it through the peg, and what your saying about the bait trailing the bulk seems to make sense. The bites were fast dips, probably due to the weight of float being used to hold.

Joff, they wern't barbel mate! What your saying about the loose feed approach is probably right though Might have just put too much bait in when all is said and done? Pete i tried caster and maggot a few times but never had a sniff on either, caught them all on two little bits of worm They wouldn't touch a lobbie!! Hammo i did try stick as well but only had a few small chublets on that, think it was just running too hard on the day where i was for it to work properly? Thanks for the support though

The only reason I said it Lee as it took me a while to click on ! The eels a few years ago (when we use to catch a few !) give me a odd problem as i thought the hook bait was still in front of the bulk but I soon realised this is not the case on many pegs due to the current changes at certain depths. To be fair I hooked and landed a few deffo upstream of my float but it made me aware of the situation of creeping down the peg with bulks.
Have a good day tomorrow.

Also , (i may be wrong) chub have a set of knashers in there throat , ie they eat crayfish , fish etc ? difficult to set a hook if its in there ?
Your dead right there Dodge; they are deep in the throat.
I had an invite for the the John Smiths in 1987, weighed in 6-15-0; Sammy Mann won, next peg (1) with a very low 9. I lost two chub , one on stick and one on waggler, they were both bite-offs as we always called them, You end with a bout half an inch of twirly line and no hook.
Finished fourth in that, that year, never had an invite again

Makes me laugh when people put their fingers into a chubs mouth like they do with carp.
Sammy Mann, now there is a name from the past, he lived just around the corner from where I did, I didn't realise he had won the John Smiths, as he used to have a caravan at Evesham.
