All our yesterdays...............one on the stick
Colin runs and fishes the newark opens from june to october. The only reels ive seen him use are ABU 507s and thats on the feeder as well. To clip up he puts a rubber band on the spool. Bloody awful things if you ask me, lost countless fish on them in my early matchfishing days, confined them to an old cupboard in the garage many years ago and theyre still in there.
Colin still wins a few on his beloved newark dyke, but we`re always playing catchup to Mr Marshall from Quorn, who catches twenty pound of roach each and every week on the dyke, that is unless he`s on peg 1 at east stoke then its 50lb of barbel on white maggot and 4.4 bayer.

Did anyone ever use the drag on the 500 series ?? Or did we all remove that part. IIRC it was the last piece left in there.

Definitely a young Colin Walton my old Newark squad manager. It looks like the early pegs at Holme Marsh.
I can remember watching him on the feeder using an ABU 506.Although he took the river apart in the 80s on the feeder he was and still is a brilliant all round angler.

that's a shame bill :-/i love river fishing but again i've not been on many matches this season
although on Wednesday i did walk along the bottom of the brinks in the deeper pegs with a stick float rod but not many takers i did catch a roach from the bottom end off the peg
gently running the stick down and stopping it right at the bottom clunk it was about 10oz and not a mark on it i also tried a couple of spots with bread flake :-/nothing still it wasn't a day for just sitting there

the shakespeare wasn't a bad reel, just not built to last like the 507.

Just had a thought - pretty sure it came in its own black 'padded' zip round reel case embossed with 'Shakie' - and yep it went in the middle of one night
