Can't disagree with you there Bill. I used to fish the Burton Joyce matches and most of those i ended up sat behind the anglers mentioned trying to learn their skills.

John Dean, I don't know if I'm right but used to think he fiddled and farted about with shot and depths to get things absolutely perfect.
These were the days when the Trent was 'artificially heated' and it was so important to get the right depths the roach would best feed at as the water temperature varied quite a bit, even in five hours.

No, the trick was that he was constantly catching by fiddling about - like Johnny Moult who would have a run through with a tare on the hook, catch a roach, put a maggot on, catch another roach, switch to a couple of pinkies, catch a roach, caster, catch a roach. He used to say if you went to a restaurant not everyone would have the same meal, so why should fish be different? (of course, Moulty pre-dated McDonalds - if you can call them restaurants!).
Remember, Deany was in the maggot era which was more active fishing and presentation wise, you could catch at all depths with very different presentations. By comparison the caster style was a bit more precise I think.

I've still got two full sets of 'em - brilliant floats. The original Pete Warrens with the green cane stems were also excellent (you only discovered it was green cane when the paint peeled off!). I must admit, I did have some of the original Benny Ashurst sticks too - they were useless on the Trent, the cane was too light. I reckon he must have used something slightly different himself! Drew next to him on the Trent once, it was a terrible area so I couldn't really see a master at work, but it was great to pack up and sit behind him and listen to his words of wisdom.

thinking about it don slaymaker was and still is a very good angler ,one that has switched from natural to commercial without a problem.brilliant lad can put his hand to anything and is a regular in the vets world champs
the only problem is it keeps him from the team fishing

I have drawn next to Kevin Ashurst quite a lot of times, brilliant company, best match angler there's ever been. I was next him in September just gone he had 23 lb of roach, I had 16 lb, I am counting that as a success

I don't think anyone has mentioned Ted Stokes - he was a bit handy! Mind you, all those Trentmen were. Anyone remember Paul Cope? I think he moved down to the south west.

Talking of cabbages Mr Yards Tammy road on the Earwash is a bit clearer now after that green carpet has gone and the next round of the EVWL may go ahead!

I fished with Paul when we were both in Avon Bait together, He is a top river angler. He still fishes on the somerset/bristol Avon circuit
