Glynn,

Use an old pan, mate!
It really depends how 'hard' the water is in the area you live.
I used to soak mine for about two days. Don't try and do too many at a time.
Stick 'em in a big old pan and put a couple of heaped teaspoons of bicarb in. You can do them without bicarb but they do not go very dark.
Put the mark straight on 'boil' and let them boil for about a quarter of an hour, you may need to add water as it boils away.
It all froths up and becomes a bit messy but you are OK. After fifteen mins or so switch off and leave them to cool down on their own accord, - important - keep the lid on to retain the heat as long as you can at this stage.
You will loose the odd one or two because they are over ripe and split but you should end up with a nice batch of very deep purple/brown coloured tares all ready for the hook.

While you are cooking them do not answer the door or the phone, - I have crappity smack up many a pan doing that!!

You can actually grow a few in your back garden or a few pots, - they are not difficult. Image Image

Forgot,

We used to use the water they were cooked in to add to a bit of gb Image

The hardest job is cleaning the pan afterwards!

Don't try and do them in a flask!!!!

Everyone seems to have there own method for cooking tares. So here is mine.

There are 6 simple steps to getting perfect tares.

1) Soak with plenty of water for 48 hours.

2) place in a saucepan and and heat to a very gentle simmer ( do NOT boil) the slower you cook them the better.

3) After around 15 to 20 minutes test them by squeezing one or two between you thumb and forefinger. You want them to be just soft enough to get a hook in. If they are not ready test every 5 minutes.

4) leave to cool in the same water

5) Sieve and put in resealable bags with enough for each session.

6) Finally, and most important, put in the freezer for a minimum of 2 to 3 days before using them.

If you do a pint or two at a time you will have enough to last ages.

I really believe that freezing them is the key to perfect tares as it seems to make the texture smoother and they are easier to hook. I dont add anything to them as im happy with the lighter colour.
If you want to be different to everyone else try them on a commercial. The carp love them Image ( Sorry Bill Image)

When I was at school ( more years ago than I care to remember) we spent the whole 6 weeks holidays fishing hemp and tares down the Trent at Willington cos we couldn't afford maggots and casters, tares were cheap.
we had some proper nets of roach
