River Yare Result - 21/8/10

Unread post by Waveney_One »

Another good result and match from the Yare. There were a few on National Duty today so we only had 46 fishing. Those on the Trent were not enjoying the 'fishing' too much by the sound of one or two text messages received. They all wished they were on the Yare! There were 2 non weighers but everyone who did weigh in had over 10lb and there were loads of 20's again a lot of which were roach weights, some on the feeder and some on the pole. Nick Larkin - Nisa feeders owner and master of that method was second with 39lb of roach on the pole!!

Some colour had dropped out of the river due to the rain we had during the week but the colourometer showed a murky 12 inches, boy was the barmaid impressed! Very warm 24.3 C with a strong SW wind that gusted to 35mph. During the week the water had been even clearer and skimmers short on numbers but there were a few to be had. As usual the fish were spread throughout the match length.

1st Stu Payne - peg 96 - 40lb 5oz which was mostly 27 skimmers on the tip
2nd Nick Larkin - peg 28 - 39lb 5oz roach on the pole at 11 metres
3rd Rodney Finch - peg 87 - 35lb 15oz roach and skimmers on the tip
4th Mike Whittaker - Peg 70 - 34lb 0oz - skimmers well over on the tip.

Top 4 framed

5th Jeanette Halliday - Peg 53 - 30lb 3oz - mostly roach on the tip on double worm!!
6th Mark Pollard - Peg 23 - 30lb 3oz
7th John Taylor - 29lb 0oz
8th Malcolm Runacres - 30lb 3oz

Some sections were defaulted

Section 1 - Mark Pollard - Peg 23 - 30lb 3oz
Section 2 - Ian Cochrane - Peg 67 - 24lb 13oz
Section 3 Jimmy Ellis - Peg 88 - 25lb 8oz
Section 4 Mark Airey - Peg 94 - 22lb 4oz
Section 5 Derek Roe - Peg 124 - 19lb 14oz

My match was horrible. I drew downstream end peg 144 an absolute flyer for skimmers. Won last weeks match and another about a month ago. Over the years I have drawn 144 twice and won both the matches with skimmers and the odd larger bream. Last week everyone on the section had over 20lb this week no one broke the 20lb mark. Today I had a skimmer about 1lb after about 15minutes and I thought this is great, they are here! Kept piling worm and caster through the feeder for 1 1/2 hours but not a sniff of another skimmer. Went on a 7 metre whip to hand and caught roach fairly steadily but they were all small, 2 - 3 ounce stamp then John Platten 2 pegs up had 3 skimmers on the bounce so I went back on the feeder - started to catch large roach! In the end I started to leave the worm out of the feed and stepped up the corn and put hemp through as well. To cut a long story short, I ended the match with 15lb 10oz, all roach except for the early skimmer, for second to last in the section!

I should have stuck to one method and not switched about.

Yes there will be a match 11th September CWH - Fancy a go?

And yes, I do know how lucky we are to have such great fishing on the river. There was many a year when it wasn't so good.

Here you are Joff.  If you look on Google maps, Multimap  etc and zoom in on NR14 6DH that takes you to the pub, Beauchamp Arms. If you zoom in on the satelite you can see where the reeds have been knocked down making a path to the river on the pegs.

The river runs from left to right on an ebb tide.  Follow the river to the left and it bends to the North, that is roach bay and the late forties and fifties.  It then goes N West through rest of the 40, the 30's and the 20's to a northerly point where it bends WSW and that is Peg 22.  You can see why it is such a bream flyer!!

1 to 21 are no longer used. Peg 1 was by the entrance to the Rockland Dyke and is a mile from the pub, access used to be the same as Pegs 22 to 60 all accessed via the Beauchamp Arms to the left.  Good path with two gates but no stiles.

Pegs 61 to 79 access through the yacht club adjacent to the Beauchamp Arms.  One gate and path not so level but accessible with wheel barrow type trolley.

Pegs 80 to 85 not currently used.

Pegs 86 to 93 one section, drive to the bottom of flood bank by peg 86.  Again a gate at the top of the flood bank.  Good path along the top of the bank.  Load trolley at the top of the bank if necessary.

Pegs 94 to 99 left of concrete bridge - drive to bottom of the bank by pegs 99/100 good access.  100 to 121 good access to the right of the concrete bridge.  Gate on the concrete bridge and ramp up the flood bank bank - which you can push the trolley up -

Pegs 124 to 128 left of  Langley Green Pump - Pegs 125 to 144 to the right of the pump.  Good path along the flood bank and you can park by the pump.

By the way if anyone fancies a trip up there day tickets are sold on the bank.

Just looked at the tide for 11/9/10 CWH. Low water just after 9am so if you come you will be fishing a flood tide all day, the run will be right to left, and it is a big spring tide which isn't necessarily the best of conditions. If you could make the 4th the fishing should be a lot better for the roach. You will need heavier tackle on the 11th due to the tide run. Feeders maybe 2 1/2ounces.

Those big springs are best for skimmers and bream although they are beginning to make themselves scarce but there should be still some about.

Dodge, I haven't seen any. We get the odd sea trout, smelt, mullet or bass and in the past we used to see a few flounders that were sometimes invaluable in a winter league match for a few points! They used to look like a leaf coming in :D

The Norfolk & Suffolk Winter League is famous for a 120 peg match to have been won with a single smelt - it was the only fish caught during the match and for a long time it was recorded every year in the Guinness Book of Records. That was on the R. Yare so things haven't always been so rosy. Years ago there was many a time when I have been forced to fish for eels in order to get a bite.

The last 5 or 6 years things have just been fantastic but only for 14 - 16 weeks a year, then the fish migrate upriver and into boat yards and backwaters.

Low water is 11 am on the 30th September and about an hour later each following day. For the tides a good site to look at is this one :-
http://www.norfolk-broads.org/tides/broadstides.asp

For tidal heights I use this:-
http://www.pol.ac.uk/ntslf/tides/?port=0204
but it doesn't go that far yet, just 4 weeks ahead.

The fishing should still be OK for your holiday, plenty of roach with fewer skimmers. There is likely to be a big shoal of big bream somewhere on the stretch during that time. Almost every year someone catches it right and has close to 100lb in a match around that time. They are on their way through the stretch imo and you cannot tell where they will show as they are not resident fish but moving up from downstream.

Just ask in the pub for me, as they keep taking pools money off me most of the guys know me! :D :D
