Hants Wilts and Dorset Winter League Round 1- 4/10/09
The First round of the 09/10 series was fished at Eastleigh and District AC’s Stoneham Lakes. And Last years champions Garbolino Blackmore Vale got off to a winning start in both the Team and the Individual stakes.
Garbolino Blackmore Vale’s Jon Atkins ( known as;Terry Nutkins by his team mates!) Draw a peg in the middle of the dam wall on the top Lake and had an impressive 37.12.0 of bream and skimmers. Starting on the feeder with red maggot hookbait, Jon was quickly into bream, but after an hour or so they slowed, so a switch to a pole at 14.5M over chopped worm and caster brought Jon more bream and he ended a healthy 8lb ahead of the rest. Jon’s most successful rig was a 0.6 sensas series 18 float with 0.10mm bottom to an 18 Kamasan B560 hook and pieces of worm.
In 2nd Place was Pete Newman of Host club Eastleigh. Pete was drawn on the far end peg on the bottom pond, and had 29.5.0 of skimmers and tench to ounce out team mate John Clarke who had 29.2.0 for 3rd
4th was Andy Palmer of test valley had 2 carp to make up most of his 27.12.0 which came from a peg on the top lake.
Ian Paulley of SPRO Dorset Raiders was 5th with 27.2.0 of bream and skimmers just along from the winner.
Teams on the Day:
1st Garbolino Blackmore Vale 49
2nd SPRO Dorset Raiders 36
3rd Eastleigh 35
4th Test Valley 34
5th Salisbury 29
6th Andover 27

Hants Wilts and Dorset Winter League 09/10
Despite all the changes to the format over the years. I always get excited about the local winter league ( or Angling times team champs, as it is now called ) And I have been waiting for this years campaign to start as soon as I finished last seasons on the Nene. Its great to see people I’ve known for years but wouldn’t normally see them except on the winter league, and as per normal I couldn’t sleep properly before the first match and was awake before the alarm went off at 5.45AM!!
Ok here’s how my match went:
I drew peg 69 on the top lake just off of the car Park, with the venue chemical toilet behind me, I was happy with the peg and was pleased as it was the only ‘on suite’ peg on the whole complex!
Rigs Set up:
11ft Normark No.1 tip rod with a medium Nisa open end feeder
0.125mm Garbo-line to an 18 Kamasan B560
11ft Map ultra 11 tip rod with a small Garbo. Inline method feeder ( Not used)
14.5M G995-
Rig1 0.4Grm Sensas Series 18 -0.14mm-0.12mm- 18 B560.
Rig 2 4x14 Garbolino DC11 0.14mm-0.10mm- 20 B560
Rig 3 4x14 Preston Durafloat 6 0.16mm-0.14mm- 16 colmic 501
Rig 4 0.2g Sensas Red carp2 0.14mm-0.10mm- 20 B560
I had 5 chucks with a Medium feeder,, clipped up at 30 turns containing chopped worm and caster plugged with Bait tech Super G and VDE Gold Pro. Before putting on a small 12g feeder and the hooklength
I then fed the pole line at 14.5m with 5x 250ml cups of the same groundbait containing Worm and caster. And a 250ml pot of hemp and caster at 5M. The first hour was to be spent on the feeder and after 35mins I had a small pull; which resulted in a 1lb skimmer. No more bites up to an hour so I topped up the long pole line with one cup of W and C before dropping onto the 5m line where I had been throwing the odd caster. 5 roach in 5 chucks then nothing, had me reaching for the feeder rod, hoping the rest had done it some good? After 10 mins I had another small pull which resulted in a 2 1/2lb bream and after that I changed up again to a medium Nisa and 5 more bream followed up until the end of the second hour. I gave it a rest and dropped onto the long pole where a long wait resulted on a 1lb skimmer. And that was how the rest of the day was made up, between swapping between the long pole and the feeder and alternating feeder sizes and hooklengths, I ended with 9 bream/ skimmers and about 7 or 8 roach for 20lb 4oz which was good enough for a section win. The best bait for the bream was double (live) red maggot. Although I had a few on dead reds. I never had a touch on worm despite putting loads through the feeder, which was surprising as it had been a good bait in practice.
The rest of my section went: 15.14.0 (one carp)
14.14.0 (1 carp+2lb of roach)
14.7.0,(skimmers)
11.12.0 (Skimmers)
& 8.5.0.(skimmers)
The next round is on the Dorset Stour at Sturminster Newton in 2 weeks time with a 50 peg practice match next weekend

Hants Wilts and Dorset AT Winter league Practice match.
11/10/09. 55 Anglers fished this weekends match on the upper Dorset Stour at Sturminster Newton.
Coming out Top was Challis Tackle Andover’s Stuart Dabbs who won £260 for his 12.4.0 net which was made up of Roach and a bonus, in the shape of a 4lb 15oz Tench. Stu fished a pole on the ‘creamery bend’ and was the top weight on the downstream sections, all the other weights were from the upstream ‘Colber’ sections. 2nd was Gary ‘Dame Edna’ Etheridge, Garbolino Blackmore Vale, Who was on peg 16 opposite wood lane, Gary had all roach in his 10.15.0 bag and as normal with Gary, he fished a very light rig in a 12ft deep swim and took his fish on maggot and caster. Gary Pocketed £165 for his efforts
3rd, at the top end of ‘colber’ was Spro Dorset Raiders angler Tony Creech who again had Roach for his 9.5.0, all on maggot or caster.
John Atkins was 4th, following his win on last weekends opening round with 9.2.0 John was pegged just above Edwin’s Boathouse
And had Roach on caster and Bloodworm over groundbait.
Simon Dennis Spro Dorset Raiders was 5th with 9.1.0, his bag caught from a peg between the bridges was made up of a few skimmers up to 12oz as well as Roach.
Finally in 6th was Cliff Carbis of Test Valley. Cliff was on the downstream end peg at Colber and had 9.0.0
Overall the River fished well with 37 weights of 5lb and over
Which looks good for the 2nd round proper next Sunday, An added bonus is the fact that the first 40 pegs today were able to drive to their pegs across the fields which are normally trolley only. And this will also be the case next week!
To Round up:
1st Stu Dabbs Challis. Tackle Andover 12.4.0
2nd Gary Etheridge. Garbolino Blackmore Vale 10.15.0
3rd Tony Creech. Spro Dorset Raiders 9.5.0
4th John Atkins. Garbolino Blackmore Vale 9.2.0
5th Simon Dennis Spro Dorset Raiders 9.1.0
6th Cliff Carbis. Test Valley 9.0.0

Ok you’ve seen the results above, here’s my match:
I drew peg 7 on the top section above the Duns mouth. After getting dropped of at my peg by ‘Terry Nutkins’. I levelled out my Milo box and got a rig out to check the depth. The peg was about 12ft deep and about 14.5-16M wide so I settled on these rigs:
1. 2grm Sensas Jean- Francois-0.12mm Garbo- line, olivette and 3 no 10 droppers 0.09mm bottom to an 18 Drennan polemaster competition hook Fished touching bottom at 11M
2. 1.5grm Sensas Jean- Francois-0.12mm Garbo- line, olivette and 3 no 10 droppers 0.08mm bottom to a 20 Drennan polemaster competition hook Fished just off bottom at 11M
3. 0.6grm Sensas Jean- Francois-0.10mm Garbo- line, olivette and 6 no 11 droppers 0.08mm bottom to an 20 Drennan polemaster wide gape hook- for Hemp at 13M
4. 1grm Maver Black ice -0.18mm Garbo- line, olivette and 3 no 10 droppers 0.18mm bottom to a 14 Drennan wide gape hook Fished touching bottom for chopped worm down the peg over nearside weed
5. 2grm Sensas Guilline-0.12mm Garbo- line, olivette and 3 no 10 droppers 0.08mm bottom to a 20 Drennan polemaster competition hook Fished just off bottom on a 7M whip over the 11M line
My mix of Groundbait was VDE Roach, secret and brown crumb with some molehill soil( I won’t pay for French mud!!)
And at the start I made up 10 double handfuls of Groundbait with 250ml of joker, a handful of frozen pinkies and the same of casters on made 16 balls that would fit my big pole cup. And cupped the lot in at 11M, Balling hasn’t really been working there this year, but I wanted to get a big patch of bait in at the start so cupping it was!
I also cupped a big cup of hemp at 13M and drip fed it all match but didn’t get a bite on it!
Running the heavier rig over first with red maggot or caster on the hook I had 20 Roach for 2lbish in the first hour. By the second hour I was getting bites right on top of the GB so switched to the whip and caught quicker, albeit a smaller stamp by 2 hours in I had 50 roach for 4lb in the net. I topped up with 4 balls and continued to catch and had 70 by 3 hours but they were getting smaller. Another top up was in order and 4 more balls went in. I the end I finished with 102 fish which was all roach except about 10 very small gudgeon a tiny dace and a 5oz perch, my only bite on the chopped worm.
I weighed 7.10.0 and with 2 3lb weights either side of me and captain Simon Hebditch having 6.9.0 from the upsteam end peg for second, I was pleased to win the section.

Ok you’ve seen the results above, here’s how I fished match 2:
I drew peg B4 on the Colber section, which was a bonus as it meant I could get dropped of at my peg by ‘Terry Nutkins’ again. I didn’t really fancy my peg as I felt there are better ones in the section. It was about 18M wide and had Norfolk reeds opposite. I got my box sorted and got a rig out to check the depth. The peg was about 12-13ft deep most of the way across and moving very slowly,I settled on an area at 13M for my main line and a hemp rig at 16M, these were my rigs:
1. 1.5grm Sensas Jean- Francois-0.12mm Garbo- line, olivette and 3 no 10 droppers 0.08mm bottom to an 20 Drennan widegape hook Fished laying on about 4” at 13M with no. 5 elastic through 3 sections( I never used this rig)
2. 1.25grm Garbolino DS 9 -0.105mm Garbo- line, olivette and 3 no 10 droppers 0.08mm bottom to a 20 Red series 2 Tubertini hook Fished Laying on 2” at 13M no.5 elastic through 3 sections
3. 0.8grm Garbolino DS 9 -0.105mm Garbo- line, Bulk of 9’s and 4 no 10 droppers 0.08mm bottom to an 20 Drennan polemaster competition hook- just off to 8” off bottom at13M, no.4 elastic through 2 sections
4. 1grm Maver Black ice -0.18mm Garbo- line, olivette and 3 no 10 droppers 0.18mm bottom to a 14 Drennan wide gape hook Fished touching bottom for chopped worm down the peg over nearside weed no.10 elastic through 3 sections
(I never had a bite on this one)
5. 0.4grm Sensas Jean-Francois -0.105mm Garbo- line, with a string of no10’s and 11’s 0.08mm bottom to a 20 Drennan polemaster wide gape hook Fished just off bottom at 16M with hemp. No 4 elastic through 2 sections.
My mix of Groundbait was VDE Roach, secret, supermatch and brown crumb mixed with damp pigeon poo, with some more British molehill soil
Like last week, at the start I made up 10 double handfuls of Groundbait with 250ml of joker, a handful of frozen pinkies and the same of casters on made 14 balls that would just fit my big pole cup. And cupped the lot in at 13M, I also cupped a big cup of hemp at 16M and drip fed it all match
We all fished with lighter and more slender floats than last week as we found they worked better last week, and in a practice session I had on Thursday, so I started with the 1.25grm float this week and had a similar start with 20 Roach for 2.5 lb ish in the first hour. I was still catching but felt I needed more bait in the peg so I put in 3 more big balls with joker with pole cup as I felt I hadn’t topped up early enough last week! With the ground bait in, I went over onto the 16M line and had 4 quick roach on the hemp. But maybe stayed a little too long on the hemp line before switching back to 13M., by now I had swapped to the lighter 0.8grm rig and came off the bottom with single bloodworm or pinkie an continued to catch. And this was how the match continued, a quick 8-10 on the bloodworm then over for 1 or 2 on the hemp, I had a spell were I dropped back onto the 1.25grm rig on the bottom and had a few stampers on the deck, but being 6” off deck on the bloodworm was best. I ended the match with 74 roach and a perch. Catching on 3 of the 5 rigs I had set up. And feeding twice more.
I weighed 9.2.0, with a 5lb and 3lb either side of me and with 7.7.0 coming second in the section from peg 2 . I was pleased to win the section, I also managed 5th in the match, but unfortunately they only pay the top 4! in a 60 pegger!!

3. 0.8grm Garbolino DS 9 -0.105mm Garbo- line, Bulk of 9’s and 4 no 10 droppers 0.08mm bottom to an 20 Drennan polemaster competition hook- just off to 8” off bottom at13M, no.4 elastic through 2 sections
4. 1grm Maver Black ice -0.18mm Garbo- line, olivette and 3 no 10 droppers 0.18mm bottom to a 14 Drennan wide gape hook Fished touching bottom for chopped worm down the peg over nearside weed no.10 elastic through 3 sections

Crappity smackin hell Chavey you chucked in some clag again mate. Reminds me of early Leicester days when we used to go everywhere with 8 kg of the stuff and try and put it all in Very successful in the early days on a lot of venues, but alas could also blow out as we found to our cost.
Nice to see a river responding to it, wish we could use bloodworm on my rivers soar, avon and trent. Only get to do it once a year in the Evesham team match, good for me last year, but major blow out this anyway good blog mate and well done

Hants Wilts and Dorset AT Winter league Practice match.
Venue: Test Valley’s Embley Park Lake. 25/10/09 20 Fished
Embley Park is a very different venue to last year, which was a skimmer dominated affair. A de-oxygenation in the summer which killed a lot of the Bream and skimmers, has turned this years match into a lot fairer venue, albeit with smaller weights made up mostly of small roach. The winner however had a 3lb Tench to thank for his top spot.
Gerry Blunt, Andover, was drawn about halfway up the far side and caught the ‘Tinca’ on a single pinkie on a 22 hook and an 0.08mm bottom, on a rig designated for roach, he topped up with around 40 roach to total 4lb 14oz to pick up £110
Just missing out, in second place Richard Chave of Garbolino Blackmore Vale who had around 100 roach and a 8oz perch for 4lb 12oz on bloodworm or pinkies from peg 11 on the near side to pick up £90
Mick Hurst of Spro Dorset Raiders completed the frame in Third Place with 4lb 8oz again of small roach but with the added bonus of 2 8oz perch Mick was drawn on peg 5 on the near bank and picked up £60 for his efforts
Fourth was Andover’s Phil Harland, who Had 120 small roach on bloodworm and pinkie for 3lb 12oz and Fifth was Test Valley’s Alan Hilman with 3lb 5oz which comprised of roach and a 12oz Eel caught on the waggler.
1st Gerry Blunt, Andover 4.14.0
2nd Richard Chave Garbolino Blackmore Vale 4.12.0
3rd Mick Hurst SPRO Dorset Raiders 4.8.0
4th Phil Harland, Andover 3.12.0
5th Alan Hilman Test Valley 3.5.0
6th Andy West Test Valley 3.3.0
