BTW, my original thoughts for a league was for an individual event, perhaps run along a similar format to the UK Champs with decent sponsorship and 4/5/6 rounds well spread.

Prepare to groan:

A motorway walks into a pub one day and orders himself a drink. He just sits down when in walks a strip of tarmac.

The motorway sees the tarmac and starts to panic, jumps over the bar and ducks down so the tarmac won't see him. The barman looks down at the motorway and says, "What's the matter? Why are you hiding? You've got six lanes and two hard shoulders so why are you frightened of a piece of tarmac?"

The motorway replies, "You don't know him like I do. He's a cyclepath!"
:D

Why has nobody done this yet ...

At the end of the day the amount of people that want to travel is in decline and it aint going to change, i see lots of canal anglers off local matches in the pub every weekend, i bet there are about 4 mini circuits in wolves area that between them have 80 to 100 anglers add to that stirrup cup and there are deffo over 100, and the majority are all anglers that used to fish the open circuit.

Lloydy...Perhaps smaller matches are the way forward!

Think about how much easier it is.

Norbury EVERY saturday, draw at the Junction with a good breakfast, good bunch of lads.

Stirrup cup, match EVERY sunday, just turn up on the car park and pay your money.

Bilston matches EVERY sunday, phone the shop to find out where the draw is and away you go.

Sportsman matches EVERY Sunday, turn up and pay...

people know exactly whats happening with these matches so will fish them.

I personally think enpegs idea can only be good for team fishing. The longer anglers, the media and sponsors sit around and wait for something to happen then team fishing will slide even quicker into decline !!!
The North West circuit was thriving only 4 or 5 years ago .......

It is now almost defunct ....... we have heard on the grapevine that the Mid Cheshire W/L has folded ??? ....... just the Wigan circuit up here left now by the sound of things   :o

Sorry to sound so downbeat but in my opinion something needs to happen very quickly BEFORE next winter    :(     8-)

I do think money has a lot to do with it, the first evidence i had of this was a few years back when wolves aa pools were £5, the attendances seemed to drop quite quickly when a super pool was brought in. I've heard a lot of the regulars moan on wolves aa matches when a drennan practice is on and pools go from £12 to £15, most of us don't take any notice as we fish matches at £15 most of year. The anglers that cant afford it, don't catch as much as others or stop going on the principle that why shold they pay so much to fish, once you've lost them they dont come back, 60 pegger with £10 pools or 20 pegger at £15 pools i know which i would rather fish.

Yes, you are right about different circuits, right about pubs, clubs or whatever. Fact, once the angler switches over they don't ever come back.
There will always be an open circuit but it is diminishing much faster than some think.
Personally I think cost has a lot to do with it.

That's my opinion for what it's crappity smack worth anyway.

Thats one reason why ive always thought stepped pools are best. Most organisers seem to disagree because of the extra admin but I for one would not have took up open canal matches as a junior if it wasnt for the likes of Pat Oconnor and Bob Taylor's stepped pools. A one-off £15 to £20 is OK for more 'elite' matches but not your average open. Most of our current open match pools systems do nothing to encourage newcomers.

I used to offer juniors completely free passage in any open match I ran; it only cost them their bait; not even a peg fee to pay.
I had a few takers but not that many. The only thing they could win however was a section that I promised to pay out of my own pocket. From recollection they won nothing, perhaps that's why it faded away.

It may not be a bad idea for a few organisers to try today, that's why I mention it.

The cheap pools on the Weaver matches are very refreshing, too! Only £11 I think.

I dont purposely fish for money but I do use it as a benchmark for how well ive done each season. When I went over to Italy it was nice to see the Italians fish for credits redeemable at tackle shops (used to just be medals).
