I wathched that match last night and I thought Man U were just about edging it when the red card came along.

To be honest I think Nani, who was playing well, thought it may come as he stayed down.

It spoilt what was a very good game, never a red card in this world but when you have a ref younger than some of the players what can you expect 8-)

this is where the wording is totally wrong. Technically and to the letter of the law he should have been sent off but every incident is different and in the context of this incident a red card was wrong.

Food for thought if this was a red card every goalie that makes a diving save and connects with another player in doing so in a packed goal area should also be red carded. Image

bill i think if you'd looked at the angle the ref had it looked a lot worse than it was and he can only have a split second but as the player stayed down i wonder what was said on his head piece Image Image might of had something to do with his decission
i'm not sticking up for the ref but you can't have a game of football without one ;) ;) ;)

There is a lot of confusion over red card rules. Contact was made, so the ref WAS allowed to red card.
However, Playing in a dangerous manner refers to attempting to play the ball (while it is in play) in a manner that threatens injury or harm to an opponent or even the player himself. For a player to be guilty of this offence, he must commit it near to an opponent, and the opponent must be adversely affected.

It is mandatory that there is contact for serious foul play to be committed. If there is no contact at all, the offence should be “playing in a dangerous manner.” In some cases, the difference between the two is a matter of centimetres. Playing in a dangerous manner can easily result in serious foul play if physical contact is made. That’s because the manner of challenging for the ball was dangerous and risky in the first place.

BUT, although contact WAS made by Nani, it is worth considering that the player challenging him for the ball, who had a better view of where Nani was (he was coming in from behind him) was also guilty of dangerous play - re: above, he was putting HIMSELF in danger. It could well have warranted a yellow card.

Taken to the letter of the law: diving headers, attempting to bring down a high ball as Nani did, and overhead kicks (the latter ALWAYS by the very nature of not knowing where an opponent is) would be deemed dangerous play and receive a caution - unless they were some distance away from other players.

From the BBC..............

Uefa takes action against Manchester United
Uefa has begun disciplinary proceedings against Manchester United following their Champions League defeat by Real Madrid on Tuesday.

European football's governing body is taking action over Nani's red card and the "non-fulfilment of post-match media obligations" at Old Trafford.

Nani was sent off by Turkish referee Cuneyt Cakir in the 56th minute for a high challenge on Alvaro Arbeloa.

The English champions went on to lose the tie 3-2 on aggregate.

Nani's red card is subject to a disciplinary review which will decide whether the automatic one-match ban should be extended.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson reacted angrily to the sending off and did not appear for the post-match interviews, with assistant Mike Phelan taking his place.

Phelan explained that Ferguson was not in the right frame of mind to speak publicly so soon after the match, saying: "It's a distraught dressing room and a distraught manager. That's why I am sitting here now."

In addition, the Manchester United players walked through the mixed zone - an area where the waiting media can talk to players - without the required minimum of two stopping. Fines are the most likely sanctions for the media misdemeanours.

Uefa says its disciplinary panel will judge the case on 21 March, and a spokesman added: "There are no issues for us regarding the sending off."

There was no mention of Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand, who sarcastically applauded Cakir after the final whistle when the players surrounded the officials.

Surprises me that last comment - when I saw him clapping the ref in his face I thought he'd have the book thrown at him for sarcasm and disrespect.........though he did seem to have second thoughts a few moments later and appeared to be seen shaking the refs hand

All I know is I watched that game like many on TV.

I like to watch games and remember the football in them; it matters little to me who really wins.

If the main thing you can remember after the match is the ref there is something not quite right Image Image Image Image Image Image

I agree Bill, it spoilt what had been a cracking game. Given some of the decisions I'm surprised no one has mentioned brown envelopes - allegedly.

There are masses of threads all over both official Manchester clubs fan forum websites about this , all out in the open. No one employed in the game will talk about it though or they will be out of a job in days  ;) Love him or hate him Ferguson would have spilt the beans with both barrells if he did an interview straight after the game ...... he probably still wants to now , thats why he is being kept out of the public domain for now  Image
