Never used a hook tyer in my life; one of the first things I always did when coaching youngsters was to get them to tie their own hooks.
To make it easier for them I used to shape a paper clip and use thread to get them started.

We are from the Potters, we are mean; wimps use hook tyers

I use 6 inch hooklengths on the cut and 12-18 inches on the river,connect them loop to loop.I use a matchman tyer,and store the hooklengths on pieces of card with small slots cut at each end.I always have a small shot 12,13,14 or stotz on the hooklength,and touch wood i've never had a hooklength break at the shot.

Pierootti hook tyer one of the best bits of kit i own and use can tie 30 to 40 hooks an hour and saves time yellow stream about on the bank

Hyperthetical Q.

Does anyone know how to tie a hook by hand?

My old man fetched me up to tie by hand but I havent tied any like that for 20 year, hook tier for me, sorry bill!!

Question in return to some of the posts, why so many times around the hook? Old man fetched me up to go 7 times around every hook we tied, curious to know why as many as 15+????

Regarding the loop size Joff, when I fished with Avon Bait, mike stone showed me a way to get them really small, he used two needles stuck in a bit of balsa about 3mm apart, when you form the loop put a needle in the loop and in the middle of the knot, wet and pull tight then slip the needle out of the knot and pull again to tighten it leaving a 3mm loop, I still do this as its very neat.

I only put 5 or 6 turns on mine why the need to keep your hook straight richie, never had any problems with lost fish or breakages.

If I use straight hooks, especially barbless, I find the fish keep coming off. Anybody got an answer to this?

Seriously, I go the same as Sven, 5 or 6 turns, I find that enough.

I can remember being in Ireland with Ivan a few years back, Chris will probably remember this.
We were tying hooks by hand in the bar without looking at them. We spent ages talking about angling problems and I loaded him with questions by the score, - his answers were always simple, interesting and easy to understand; they were also right! If anybody is interested in any of these I'll run a few I can remember on here, - if anyone is interested.

you should always use a hooklength to create a weak spot the last thing a fish needs is to drag a whole pole rig round to its death we need fish so take care of them.big hooks do work with hemp joff but only when bagging ive had my best days on 22 b511 lighter hooks present the bait much better especially when the fish are looking up to feed you still catch just as quick and somtimes better stamp with a lighter rig the lightist you can fish

4 inch for roach ( apart from hemp where I would use 12 inch ), 6 inch for skimmers for less resistance. 12 inch for stick and wag on river and 6 inch for carp and 4 inch for f1s. I used to tie by hand but now do it with a match men hook tyer because I can do it in half the time! Missus appreciates it anyway!!

Regarding turns, because you pull the line back up the shank under the turns You have a line running parallel with the shank. The more turns the longer that line runs up the shank. It's just my spin on it, there's never any right or wrong way

What does everyone use to lubricate the knot when tightning it up ??

I used to use a small dab of "Slip" elastic lubricant, seemed to work OK. Never had any problems with the knot loosening after i'd tied it.

I just wet it in my mouth, Never had any problems. On a figure of eight knot I pull it tight whilst its still in my mouth
