That's just the way it was back then. Great pictures.
If big nets of fish are lifted out with the fish spread out like in those pictures there is no problem, it's when the net is lifted out by the top and then all the weight is on the fish at the bottom of the net.
I saw that too, ::) Surely to promote fishing you need pictures of the stars, both fish and anglers. I believe in 'green' countries like Germany the caught fish are supposed to be killed to prevent any chance of disease apparently) but in reality I know anglers that do put the back. That used to be the case years ago anyway.
Those two toach catches in Ireland were cerainly put back.
