I know this man and in his day an absolutely brilliant angler but bit of a roque.
He followed unusual affects that the moon had on fishing etc and had a tackle shop in South London once.
The white stuff on the Abu is winter protection from the cold , also on the rod around the base of the handle,so his hands did not get cold....aaahhhh
He would fish the 'dumpy' float ( Pre waggler days) out to the middle of the Thames and stand on his wicker basket for maximum control.

How many times have I thought of doing something like that to my 506's.

Bloomin freezin to hold in the depths of winter, but never got round to it. Would probably choose a darker colour mind  :D

Thing about that picture though, is he doesn't seem dressed for the cold exactly ??? Not proper cold anyway.

Yes Mark I thought that earlier. No doubt a Winetr shot and trotting on a river but maybe a promo shot.
I could not be without my 501's and All floatfishing done with them..max line being 1.5 lb to 3lb maxima main.
Never get a tangle and acn cast hundreds of times in a wag/mag roach match.
Used to use WD40 on the inners but now found some sea fishing silicone type oil that makes them run smooth, especially on a backwind if we lucky enough to use.
Still use 12 ft microlites and norborons.

Wiley,
Is that one of Ray Mumford's former team members Pete Burton. I think He was in an earlier team photo with the Tonkers. I had help with this and my friend told me he was a cockney wide Boy !!!!!
What did He used to get up to then ?

Exellent choppy. Yes Peter Burton.
Had a tackle in Catford and was a natural.
Not in earlier pics with Raymondo though, but same era and likely they did not get on...?
Will have to ask KC what PB was up to.?
