Memories of 1994………..

A few spring to mind………although I don’t figure any where in this ‘roll of honour’  :'(

Interesting to note, of the 11 matches fished,  6 were on rivers those days………..and the club was affiliated to the BAA

Fladbury was the scene of my Cashmores ‘debut’………par for the course it was high and carrying a fair bit of colour.  Image Leeky the victor was pegged just below the weir. Pegged lower down inbetween Rolly and Les Walton I managed to sneak in the frame with a low 1lb odd…….a small chublet and several gobies (nowt changes there then :P) taken on the stick in 10ft of water at my feet.

3 months on - the close season was still in force - and onto match 2 - man was I out of my depth having lived predominantly on cuts and being a tiddler snatcher. Never seen the venue (Evesbatch) before, and don’t think I’d fished a pool that threw up 5lb plus beasties before,  Image although I done a couple of ‘new’ commies with smaller samples. Mick Kenn romped it on what I thought I heard was a borrowed rod, although MGB may correct me on that. That saw Mick pickup a couple of additional trophies, one for his heaviest fish of the season - an 8lb carp, which was a beastie those days, plus the match weight

Next up The Danery…….looked forward to this one……………..but BUM DRAW MASTER mode kicked in and I drew a (the only?) washing machine peg on the section.  Image  Probably a flyer peg in the winter, but July…..Nah.  Image

Match 4 at BAA Nordley Pools. Aint got a clue which pool/no, but HAHA also joined the club at this stage (without a vote Harry :P Image) and made his debut, pegged next to MGB. From what I remember Heinzer should probably have won this one as he tussled with an unseen ‘beastie’ on rod and line………..

Cant remember a lot about Catton park, other than true to form it didn’t live up to expectations.  Image

There’s a tale about the next one on the Soar - the one about Heinzer who after a hour or so, went back to the car to get his sun glasses. On his return he found a section of pole had disappeared into the depths. He stripped of and went skinny dipping, and there was a cry of jubilation that he’d located and retrieved the missing section.  Image  Back up the bank, dried off and dressed, there was another wail from his peg as he realised it wasn’t just one section that had gone in, there was another. Image  So he stripped off again and the jammy William the Conqueror found that section too. 8-)

Cant remember a lot about Marcliffe other than it was a bl**dy long walk - think Lasher may have been near to the lock cutting?

Lasher came up trumps again the following match at Brockamin, but again I cant rember owt about this one.

Back to the river for no 9. If I remember correctly, and MGB will pull me up if I’m wrong,,,,,,,,,,it was no surprise he won this one as he drew a dream peg with a tree that overhung into the river half way across. Image  Was it a nest of kinver stripeys you had MGB, or have I got the wrong venue?

A cold, foggy day on the Trent greeted us for the penultimate match. Can’t remember what I did - obviously not a lot, but I think a few got seen off by ‘big’ barbel.

And I can remember even less about the last match at Botterham Lock…………..

Well my memory may be worse than MGB’s - chatting on Sat when he popped along the cut he thinks his match winning weight may have comprised of a pike, which used to count those days.

Anyway on to 1995 - and perhaps I confused MGB’s tree peg with match 3 here on The Avon…..or did I?

BOOBY PRIZE ?????????????

Whilst MGB was club champion, winning one match in the process, HaHa won two and picked up three other trophies as a result of that match at Kings. For some time there was some debate as to whether that catch was the heaviest in the Clubs history.

Also good to see Tommy ‘the magician’ Cooper getting in the prize list a few times, winning a couple of matches on his way to also becoming knockout winner. Nice to see Rolly (RIP) win a couple too

As for my memories, Cleeve Prior was up and chocolate and most struggled for a bite because of the conditions.

Suppose I must have had some input into the fixture list this year with match 2 being on Tipton Pool. Can remember a few big fish being lost that day, but the roach daint show…….

Cant remember fishing Drakelow which I ‘introduced’, but perhaps I did?

Cant remember Stubbs either, but I supposedly fished the Avon at Bidford ‘all wrong’ on the 4 mtr whip instead of the waggler. :D

Kings obviously brings back memories………

Cant remember any of the others other than the last match at Walcot when Heinzer won it with a last chuck on the feeder. I tipped a few pound of bits away and DNW to the aghast of a few

That 'Buildwas' was the power station section immediately below the BAA waters Dave - did you fish it or the upstream BAA waters?

Memories of 1996............

Fishing an extra match this year, now 12

Cant remember much about match 1

Had a nice match fishing the whip on match 2 – thought I’d done enough then Gouldy surprised me with some better stamp skimmers to ‘do me’ Image

Boldings was rock hard for most.......if I remember it was ‘green’ and had the barley bales in to combat the algae - Tommy ‘the magician’ Cooper fished floating bread to walk it

Onto match 4 and if I remember correctly HaHa snuck a couple of late bream off a peg in the late 20’s

Tommy C rattled up a second win off the top upstream peg. It was always a flyer but he was scratching his head and halfway through was struggling until he popped down to HaHa ‘who put him straight’ Tommy went from zero to hero in those last couple of hours

Cant remember much about 6,7 or even 8 Image

Match 8 was on the golf course at Drakelow and decent weights were expected...........but massive low pressure affected things. Image In fact I took ‘the nip’ with me on this one. He came upto me after about two hours in. ‘How you doing?’
‘Crap – got 8oz i’m gunna wrap up and pop into Burton for a bite to eat and come back for the weigh in’
‘8oz???????? Yam walking it’
Turned out half the field was dry.............. :o

Tommy rattled up win no 3 on the inlet and outlet

Match 11 went well for yours truly, skimmers over punch, whilst a few beasties were hooked and lost by others on that ‘pretty bridge’ section

And match 12 was predominantly gobies with the odd silver as the cut back then was a different proposition compared to today
