Was thinking about the Extension today, and the W & Essington come to that, all the Tench i've seen have been sizeable. No small stuff.

Bit like Barbel in some waters, rarely catch small ones.

Am I right in that smaller Tench in these cuts rarely show ?

Yep markv - they tend to be in the 1.5 - 4lb bracket, with some larger speciments putting in an appearance - remember Hotlips club match win down Wood Lane - 5 tincas for 25lb ;)

However two seasons ago, an angler just to the left of Wood Lane surprised me when he showed me his net - he'd had half a dozen tincas - the biggest being about 4oz :o

Which reminds me of another tale when I fished at mid week evening match on the Brownhills MG sections

I started on the punch............and had 5 or 6 tincas - again the best went 4oz :o These diddy tincas were totally unheard of.

Anyway, those days on the 3 hour matches, 2 or 3 tench (5-8lb) would win it or at least get you in the frame. My 'mentor', old Jack Fletcher was 'with me' that evening, walking the section.......

It was 'hard' - another grueller Image and of course people were asking him 'Anybody had owt?'

'Arr' was his response ' My mates got 5 tench'

The whistle finally went and i packed up waiting for the scales.

Angler after angler walked past me all packed up. The scales came down to me as a couple of anglers sauntered past.

My tincas didnt even break the lb mark - the air was blue with comments 'crappity smack me I've chucked twice that back' from a fair few as I took the section money Image

The little soaps(as we call em) do show up from time to time mainly just the other side of wood lane bridge. It's quite funny sometimes when your tight to the reeds in the warm weather expecting a lumpy tench and the float goes and a tiny green tench goes orbital lol :) they're proppa loveley little things perfect miniatures of the big beauty's :)

Never had a small tench out of the cut in this area. Certainly interesting to hear they are caught and also promising that they are breeding well. Mind you the biggies are there had my best ever canal session last year on the common with several tench over 6lbs amazing stuff roll on this year.

Yeah, about that I guess, I didn't weigh it, it's teeth and my lure got a bit tangled up, took a bit of unhooking!

You'll have a few on the boats Humpy Image

Image Top OBI snottie tip :D dont forget to put in a punch line 'short' (4/5 mtrs at bottom of nearside shelf) and start on it - particularly on the first half dozen pegs.......usually throws up a few early skimmers - just ask OBI ;) Image
