Angling Trust Division 1 National Newsletter 2017 (courtesy of Dave Watkins and Terry Nutt)

Mr Captain / Team Manager,

We welcome you to Shropshire and the Division 1 National, which will be held on the Shropshire Union Canal on August 19th 2017. My name is Dave Watkins and I will be the joint organiser along with Terry Nutt of the event. Having organised Angling Times semis and big events in the past, we are very keen for this match to be a showpiece for Hodnet Angling Club and the North Shropshire area. The draw headquarters will be at Barbers, Market Drayton Livestock Auction, situated just off the A 53 Market Drayton bypass, (Sat Nav TF9 3SW).The match length will start at High Offley (Sat Nav ST20 0NG) and run through Market Drayton ending up at Coole Pilate (CW5 8AU). All teams must be aware that all the sections are in open countryside and accesses are very limited. They involve driving down narrow country lanes where one could meet heavy agricultural machinery and especially milk lorries, taking up most of the road. Parking for practice will be available at most of the road bridges, but anglers must keep all drives and gateways clear at all times.

K Br 82 (road bridge) (CW5 8AU) to Br 84 (CW5 8AU)

The Shropshire Union Canal has an average width of 13 metres with approximately four to four and a half feet of depth in the centre track. The main flow on sections A to G is from right to left, however on section H, bridge 67, which is known locally as the crossover bridge, the towpath is on the other side meaning that the canal will tow from left to right for the remaining sections. There is no ban on the use of catapults, but anglers must be aware in the sections where boats are moored opposite, not to catapult bait to close or onto the boat.

Day tickets will be available on the bank in all sections from a water bailiff priced at £4. A special Canal Rover ticket can also be obtained, enabling an angler to practice anywhere on the match length for unlimited times. Canal Rover tickets can be bought individually or by any team on block, there being a special deduction for team tickets. Please ring or text for details.. These tickets priced at £10 will only be available from myself (Dave Watkins) by request e.g. Phone 07725556159, Email dgwatkins@sky.com or Text prior to fishing. They will run from April 1st until August 13th and must be produced to a water bailiff on request. Any team
wishing to practise in a group in a specific area would be advised to contact me to find out the availability of the area, before fishing. Any areas of the match length may be pre-booked on a first come, first served basis. The pegging on the match length for practise purposes will be determined by white painted canes behind each peg on every section, (until they get nicked). These 50 pegs will be used in all Open Matches leading up to and including the main event. Anglers wishing to practice on H Section must call at the farmhouse (Mr Brindley) on arrival to see about the availability of the driveway to Bridge 67. This is the only access to this section and must not be abused. It will probably be fully available from mid May onwards, with an honesty box in place to cover parking (£1 donations going to charity). Every effort has been made to ensure that all the pegs are fair, equidistant and safe and clear of wires and other obstructions.

Bait Bans.
Bloodworm and Joker and any form of pellets are banned on the entire match length.

There will be no bait available at the draw headquarters and it is advisable that all teams bring ample supplies with them as there are no tackle shops local to the Market Drayton area.

Contact, Angling Trust

I hope you all have a pleasant time on your excursions around North Shropshire and the Market Drayton area, and find the fishing to your liking. If you have any queries regarding the venue etc, I or Terry will only be too pleased to help. We wish all the competing teams the best of luck, and hope that we may be asked to stage the event in the future. It would be appreciated if you could text or email to me, to say that you have received this newsletter.
Ps. I may not be available to answer queries between 7 & 9 pm on a Tuesday & Friday due to my Crown Green bowling commitments, but will be available before and after.
