Squatt fishing on canals

Unread post by garethevans1986 »

Ladies and gents,

The title says it all....whats your method?

Do you put dead squatts in your groundbait?
What kind of volume of bait do you go through in a 5 hour match?
Whites?
Red?
What do you take with you?

Thanks
Gareth

Hi Gareth, squatts don't want killing they don't wriggle very far,
Will you be fishing squatts in the winter or summer time, on a canal , drain or river , ?

Hi Gareth, this time of year I would initially feed the squatt in ground bait , depending on how clear or coloured the canal is , black GB would be better in a clear canal, a fine ground bait from which ever range you use, if you can feed a couple of lines one at the bottom of the near shelf, and the bottom of the far shelf

With it getting colder the fish will be on the bottom , but if you can get them feeding off the bottom then start loose feeding the squatt
Obviously small hooks will be better, pinkies normally work well on the hook when feeding squatt

By the way what is the depth amd width of the canal?

Davey,

Ill be fishing a few different ones over the next few months but this weekend it will be the Llangollen canal which isn't very deep at all, probably 5ft down the channel and say 2ft, if that on the far shelf.

Gareth, just take your time feeding, remember the old saying you can't take out what you have put in,
Try and be as accurate has you can with feeding and fishing over the squatt and GB, have a couple of rigs set up one plumb depth and one off the bottom, its always a good idea to find two areas the same depth one close in and one further across, this way you can use the same rigs
Good luck, and let us know how you get on
