MD Fund Raising match at Lindholme Lakes

17th April

This match had been organised in order to raise funds for the running costs of maggotdrowning.com. Neil at Lindholme lakes had generously let us use the lakes free of charge as well as securing some rods for prize’s. All money from the day would go to Dave (red leader) to help pay for the site running costs.

The day started off for me and Gem by me getting up late, 12pm. Gem woke me up with a phone call. I had planned to get all my gear ready and make my rods up but that went out the window. Gem turned up and we proceeded to load the car up. Gem’s 106 is not the biggest car but we got all the gear in quite easily and put the postcode into the sat nav ready for the off.

Google maps had indicated it would be about 2 hours to get there but with numerous delays on the A38 and M1 it was nearer 3 hours. We arrived at the lakes and was greeted by Neils son who kindly helped us unload the gear from the car in to a house that was been used for storage for those not camping. We also met another MD member, Red Baron. He had travelled from Brighton and his journey had taken 4-5 hours 😮

Me and Gem were leaving our gear at the lake as we had booked in to a hotel for the night, this was before we knew Neil was allowing overnight camping. We had a look round on laterooms.com and had seen a room in the red lion inn in Epworth which was 2 minutes away from the lake. This is how we imagined the room to look like as it was in the pictures on the site. Also included was an en-suite bathroom.

Excited to get in the room

You can only image the disappointment when the lady opened the door to the room and we were greeted by this..

Only 3 t bags and Dust under the bed 🙁

The lovely en-suit bathroom lol

Couldnt swing a cat in here

I wasn’t really bothered but Gem was a little upset bless her. After unpacking and having a shower in the en-suit we went for a walk round Epworth and did a bit of shopping.

Getting back we went and had a meal and I have to say it was the best pub food I have ever had. The portions were huge. After the room disappointment the meal more than made up for it. And it should have done too, it was nearly as much as the room 😀

Following a good nights sleep we woke up at 7.45. We went and paid for the room and meal and set off for the lakes. We were greeted by a car park full of cars and people. The most I had ever seen for a match. We parked up and joined the queue for the draw. Dave, Malc and Dai were just in front of us.

Me and Gem got to the front and hoped to draw near each other to save unloading the car twice. Gem drew first and pulled out Oasis peg 48 and dipped in and pulled out Oasis peg 44 😀 Bonus only 1 person between us. That person was Worker1 and he was keen to avoid been Minxed off the next peg.

With no rigs made up I just used one of my Rolfs rigs with was a Jon Walker 0.3g margin float, 0-17 line and a size 16 Fox match carp hook. Lacky was Middy battle machine set very slack. A bit extreme but it turned out to be perfect as the fish here were very hard fighting for the size. They were all in perfect condition too.

One of the smaller fish from the swim

I was feeding micro pellets and using dynamite source 6mm hooker pellets. With in 10 seconds I had a fish on and thought I would be in for a busy day but after 5 minutes the bites had dried up and I was struggling for a bite. I changed to corn and manage to tempt a few more before trying meat and catching 3 more. Switching back to pellet saw a few more fish in the net.

Gem was struggling but she could not fish to the far bank and she could not hold her pole that far out. She was fishing down the track but was still managing to catch a few. She let out the mighty shout after netting her first fish. I could hear the bum holes tightening up round the lake lol 😀

Gem soon got bored and went for a walk with the camera for an hour. Here are a few of her pictures.

Norm again..

Norm again, Is something going on here 😀

With the sound of 2 shotgun blasts signalling the end of the match I felt like I had about 40lb but as the weighing proved I was way out. For once I had gone way over 😀 I weighed in 32-12. I thought sneaky Pegasus on the next peg had beaten me but again I was wrong, he weighed in 24-12. My weight was good enough for 2nd in my section. I remember thinking back wishing I had landed the 6lb mirror that I played for 5 minutes before he winked at me and spat the hook 🙁

Worker1 was next to be weighed and he looked tense as he was unsure if he had enough to beat Gem on the next Peg. He popped 8-12 on the scales and waited for Gem to bring her fish out, it was going to be VERY close. Gem weighed 7-7 and he let out a big sigh of relief and escaped a next peg MINXING.

The weigh in was soon completed and everyone was waiting on the car park for the presentation. The cafe was open and serving hot pork rolls which were going down a treat. Dave was also serving some beer which was also going down a treat.

Each section winner got a Garbolino rod courtesy of Neil. Loony kindly donated his back to be auctioned off and the proceeds going to Dave to help fund the server. Here are some pictures of the winners.

We had a great time. The fishery and Staff were top notch. Meeting up with everyone was great. Seeing Malc with that mop on his head… no so great 😀

The Journey home only took 2 hours and was traffic free. Word is another match is been arranged for next year and we will be putting our names down for sure but will be camping next time 😛

Gem managed to MINX 30 people on the day, to say she is chuffed is an understatement.

Results.

Rolfs Lake Spring League. Round 3.

7th March

Full day of Sun

This morning I was full of beans from my result last week but I was fishing in A section and there had been another frost over night which had left most of the pegs covered with a layer of ice. The itself had not frozen as there was a gentle wind blowing across it. At the draw I was first to draw and I pulled out peg 9, peg 9 had won the section last week so I was quite hopeful of getting some fish together.

I had the Longest walk to get to peg 9. On arrival I stepped on my peg and nearly slipped in as it was like a mini Ice rink 😀 Across on peg 32 was Mick Lane and to my left was Paul Jay so I was in good company for the day.

My home for the day

Today also Gem had come along with me to either bring me good luck or Jinx me 😯  But she spent most of the day sleeping after she discovered John Korum chair had a recline function :d

Rare moment when Gem was awake 😀

I spent the first hour of the match trying to tempt carp or skimmers from my peg with corn and soft 4 and 6mm expanders but they were having none of it today. Mick Lane over on peg 32 was bagging up on silvers catching them short and Paul Jay was also picking up silvers fishing long on peg 10. I made the switch to maggot and pinkie and soon started picking up silvers. I was having to feed quite heavy to keep them interested which was a bit of a change from last week where I had fed nothing at all.

Mike Stimpson was on peg 22 this week and I could see him catching a few, he was fishing long to the bush where I had been told to fish.

Mike Stimpson on peg 22

Team mates Gary and Big Ron had also caught carp.

Big Ron WIDE AWAKE 😀

Gary caught enough for the Section.

For the rest of the match I just kept catching silvers and could only tempt 1 skimmer. My prediction was Mick had won our section with Paul in second and I was right, but I wasn’t sure if I would be 3rd or last as I had not been watching the other guy that much.

On to the weigh in and it was Phil Powell on peg 18 to take the overall win today with a catch of 89lb

Match Winner Phil Powell

Some of Phil's Fish

Peg 22 had not fish as well this week. Mike had managed 67lb from it.

Mick Lane had won A section with a fine bag of silvers. Paul was indeed second and I had managed 3rd. Gary had won his section but despite having 4 carp big Ron had come last in his section leaving Team Pikey’s 3rd overall on the day.

Mick's fine net of fish

The next match is on the 21st March. I will be fishing in B section this time. I will not be fishing the final round as Dan Blackwell is fishing in my place. He knows when to fish 😛 He will be fishing in the favoured C section.
